AA weapon employment.
^
It's time to learn about your air-to-air weapons. Your F-16 is loaded
with 2 AIM-120s, 2 AIM-9s, and 960 rounds of gun ammo. You have three
targets approaching you at 15,000. Go to TWS mode on the radar and
select the first target. Cycle to the AIM-120. Note the MLE zones
presented. Cycle to the AIM-9; note the MLE zones get smaller. That's
because the AIM-9 is an infra-red, short range missile while the AIM-120
is a radar guided, medium range missile. Cycle
back to the AIM-120 and fire at the first target when he is at about 80%
of maximum range. Switch to the next target in range, fire at him with
an AIM-9. Don't forget you have to attain a tone to ensure seeker
lock-on. Switch to the final target. Select guns and hose off a few
rounds when he gets within range. If he is still living, do a tail
conversion (that means to get on his tail) and kill him off with your gun.
Note the missiles may not have killed each of the targets. That's
because missiles in the real world aren't perfect. Sometimes you get
the "Golden BB", sometimes a great shot doesn't kill the enemy aircraft.
Better quality shots yield higher kill probability. This generally
means "closer is better". However, closer also gives the enemy a better
shot and higher PK. For this training mission, the bad guys don't shoot back.
