- -----------------------
- 1. GENERAL DESCRIPTION
- -----------------------
- * VDOMail is a video based messaging system. It can capture a
- video clip, compress it to a relatively VERY small file in AVI
- format, and send it as a standard e-mail message via a TCP/IP
- network.
-
- * The user can control the quality, and by that control the
- size of the recorded clip.
-
- * The straightforward and easy-to-use GUI makes VDOMail
- attractive for non-sophisticated users.
-
- * VDOMail delivers e-mail by either connecting directly to an
- e-mail server (via SMTP protocol), or by utilizing a MAPI
- compliant mailer, if present, enabling built-in features like
- address book, spelling, etc.
-
- * VDOMail can also generate audio only messages, which are
- sent with a postcard selected by the sender. These postcards
- can be imported, created (grabbed) or chosen from the supplied
- VDOMail Postcard gallery.
-
- * VDOMail supports both Dial-up connection and LAN connection.
-
- * VDOMail can be configured to send self-extracting messages,
- which encapsulate a remote-installer. This remote-installer
- analyzes the recipient's computer and if needed, downloads and
- installs the software to view the video clips (approx. 80 KB
- overhead).
-
- * VDOMail can also be configured to send the needed decoders
- as another attachment in the message. This means though that
- the message will be quite large (approx. 270 KB overhead).
-
- -----------------------
- 2. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
- -----------------------
- Hardware/Software Requirements
- ------------------------------
-
- * For video and audio messages: PC with an Intel Pentium 133
- processor.
- * For audio-only messages: PC with a minimum 486DX2 processor
- * 16 MB RAM minimum
- * Windows 95
- * Sound Card
- * Video Capture Card (not required for audio only messages)
- * Display Card with High Color or True Color - 16 bit (65,536
- colors) and above
-
- Connectivity Requirements
- -------------------------
-
- * Internet Connection
-
- Requirements to Receive a Message
- ---------------------------------
- Message recipients must have a PC with Windows 95/NT 4.0
-
-
- --------------------------
- 3. INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE
- --------------------------
- VDOMail Installation procedure will install the following:
-
- * VDOMail Recorder software including online help
- * VDOMail Uninstall procedure
- * A link to VDOnet web site
-
- To install VDOMail:
- 1. Double Click the installation file
- 2. Follow instructions as they appear on the screen.
-
- ------------------------
- 4. LIMITATIONS
- ------------------------
- * Non-VFW (Video For Windows) compliant capture cards (like
- FireWire) are not supported.
- * In SMTP mode (non-MAPI), no record of sent messages is kept.
- Workaround: Use "File|Save as..." to save the message before
- you record a new one.
- * AOL users: Please refer to the section "AOL users" below.
-
- ------------------------
- 5. AOL USERS
- ------------------------
- VDOMail Senders
- ---------------
- * Does not support sending VDOMail with AOL mail client.
-
- VDOMail Recipients
- ------------------
- * AOL mail client cannot open multiple attachments. If you
- choose to attach decoders, two attachments will be created.
- The AOL mail client will tell the recipient this:
- "This message is a multi-part MIME message and will be
- saved with the default filename ????????.mim".
-
- This file cannot be opened with the standard AOL software.
- Here's AOL's solution:
- "There are freeware utilities (a program that anyone can
- use for free) called WinCode (for Windows users) ...
- that can help.
- How To Find WinCode, a MIME Decoder (for Windows Users):
- * You can download WinCode (Wincode v2.7.3c) from this
- Web site:
-
- ... Install and run the utility according to the
- instructions."

-
- ------------------------
- 7. KNOWN BUGS
- ------------------------
- * Cyrix processors with old motherboards or old Windows 95
- sometimes cause white video self-view.
- * Sometimes bad sync between audio and video.
- Workaround: Record again.
- * Sometimes after "Trial" dialog the application will take
- relatively long time to start.
- * When the "Trial" dialog is visible, it does not appear on
- the Task bar.
- * Sometimes the first recording takes relatively longer to
- start, and the reaction to "Record" and "Stop" is relatively
- slow.
- Workaround: Record again.
- * Problems with Netscape Communicator 4.0X as your MAPI mail
- client:
- a) No instructions are included within the message.
- Workaround: Manually add the text:
- -------------------------------------------------------
-
- This video message was composed with VDOnet VDOMail
- software.
- Learn more about VDOMail at
- http://www.vdo.net/vdostore/info/vdomail.html
-
- Having trouble viewing this video mail?
- Download the VDOMail decoders from:
- ftp://ftp.vdo.net/pub/decoder/decode20.exe
- -------------------------------------------------------
-
- b) Attach decoders option does not work - only the
- VDOMail.avi is attached to the message.
- Workaround: Manually send another mail with the file
- decode20.exe from the VDOMail installation folder
- attached.
-
- * Local message view might not function properly if NetShow
- 3.0 beta installed.
