- Thank you for your interest in Search and Replace!
-
- Create a directory and copy all the files on disk into it. If you are running
- Windows 95 or NT, create a shortcut to SR32.EXE. Windows 3.1x users, add SR.EXE
- to a group in the Program Manager.
-
- The SR.ZIP file contains the latest version of Search and Replace for Windows (sr.exe), as well
- as the 32-bit version of Search and Replace (sr32.exe). The 32-bit version runs on Windows NT
- and Windows 95, and was tested on VFAT (Windows 95's file system), and NTFS (Windows NT's
- optional, more secure file system).
-
- PLEASE NOTE: While Search and Replace allows replacing in binary files (such
- as .DOC, .XLS etc), these proprietary format files may contain internal
- counters which may get out of synch. As a result, the application that
- created the file may not be able to read it. For best results, replace
- in ASCII text files (such as .HTM, .RTF, .TXT, .INI, .C, .CPP, .H etc).
-
- New features in v2.63-2.75 include:
- - Write changed files to Backup Directory option now allows you to leave your
- original files intact and write the changed files to the Backup Directory instead.
- - Show only File Names option was implemented.
- - Buttons for Replace/Skip in current directory were added in the Replace
- Confirmation dialog.
- - Regular expressions to find (and replace) items "close by"
- (up to 4096 characters) can be set in options. The default is 512 characters.
- - For the Replace option Prompt on each file, a Cancel button allows you
- to stop the replace at any time.
- - The !^$ operators are now supported for regular expressions. Also the []
- operator now matches only one character in the list specified (to comply
- more with the grep functionality).
- - Regular Expressions are now better documented and with more examples
- in the help file.
- - Default Search String, File Masks and Directory are displayed for first-time
- users(all you have to do is click Search).
- - Binary Mode dialog (... buttons next to Search and Replace strings) clearly
- display the CR, LF and TAB characters. Also the help file better explains
- the use of special characters.
- - A new command line parameter (/Q) allows closing the application after an
- operation is performed for users who want to call it repeatedly from batch
- files.
- - The Windows 95/NT version allows View Context of binary files through a new
- Freeware utility: HexView. HexView can be downloaded from
- http://home.sprynet.com/sprynet/funduc. It should then be installed in the
- same directory as Search and Replace(or in the path or the Windows dir.).
- - Scripts can be created to specify multiple search/replace combinations (with
- associated settings) and/or multiple paths and masks to process. The script
- settings (masks, paths, search/replace strings) can also be overridden
- from the main screen.
- - New command line parameters were added for Touch, Replace and sCript file.
- See help file for more details.
- - File Finder feature and collection of file names to process is faster.
- - Replace feature is faster when processing multiple files.
- - Windows 3.1x version (SR.EXE) users can now process more than 3000 files
- (limited only by available memory).
- - Last non-maximized window size is now restored for the Main Windows and the View
- Context window.
- - In the Replace Confirmation dialog hitting Enter will replace.
- - In the View Context window, paging through the file and then clicking on the edit
- box will not cause it to shift when displaying the maximum number of lines.
- - Exclude masks can now be used. For example: *.*;~*.swp;~*.exe;~*.dll will process
- all but *.swp;*.exe;*.dll files.
- - Backup directory feature will create all directories properly. Directories with
- exactly 2 characters (such as C:\SR) were not created correctly in the past versions
- and the replace for those files were only performed if backup was not used.
- - Copy to clipboard error on large Search Result lists was corrected.
- - Command line parameters are now parsed correctly if the flags were specified last.
-
- Features planned for future releases include:
-
- - Searching through .ZIP archive files.
- - More options for script users such as show only file names with matches, allow
- searching for files containing "string1 AND (string2 OR NOT(string3))" type
- expressions.
-
- The same help file is used for both versions.
-
- Search and Replace and other useful utilities can be found at the URLs below or
- on WUGNET's (Windows User Group Network) CompuServe forums (GO WINSHARE, search for
- SR.ZIP).
-
- As part of the registration fee, you will also receive free updates for a year and customer
- support (by E-MAIL). For ordering information, see the help file.
