NAVAHO Lock is an easy-to-use encryption and privacy application that works with most
popular email programs. NAVAHO Lock will encrypt and decrypt text messages written in
any language as well as any digital data including; images, spreadsheets, CAD files,
databases, and applications.
NAVAHO Lock is available from the CyPost Corporation website:
http://www.cypost.com/ - for US$39.95
NAVAHO Viewer is a freeware companion program that can be downloaded from the CyPost
website. NAVAHO Viewer will allow recipients of NAVAHO Lock encrypted documents to view and extract the encrypted message, thereby allowing NAVAHO Lock users to freely send their encrypted documents to anyone on the planet knowing that the recipient will be able to decrypt the message (if he or she has the key).
Installation
NAVAHO Lock and NAVAHO Viewer come as self-installing WinZip files. After downloading,
double-click the NAVAHO Lock file Icon. The Installation program will ask you questions
to help it configure your system.
Set Default Email
For NAVAHO Lock to function properly, one of your email programs must be set as the default. In most cases this will be done when you installed and configured your email program. If for some reason you do not have a default email program, you will have to set one as default.
For instructions on configuring your email program, refer to your email program's
documentation.
Cryptographic Service Providers
Although NAVAHO Lock does contain cryptographic code within its system, it is primarily designed to access various CSP's (Cryptographic Service Providers) that are either incorporated into the Windows Operating System (OS), or that can be easily added to the system. The advantage of using third party CSP's is that as newer and stronger encryption
technologies emerge they can be used by NAVAHO Lock without the user having to upgrade to a newer version of the program. CSP's are available from various vendors and CyPost has plans to release its own free version in 1999, however one very strong CSP is readily available from Microsoft's website.
All Windows 95 (release version 2 and up) through Windows 98 and Windows NT
(version 3.5 and up) Operating Systems come with at least one CSP. This CSP is called
"Microsoft Base Cryptographic Provider" and allows for 40 bit encryption, which is
currently the strongest allowable for export from the US to overseas. Many OS's also
contain the Microsoft "Enhanced" Cryptographic Provider, depending on the version of
Internet Explorer you have on your system or whether or not you have updated Internet
Explorer from Microsoft's website. This CSP allows for strong encryption (currently up
to 168 bit).
The way to find out if you have the Enhanced Cryptographic Provider is to begin to send
a message to someone in NAVAHO Lock and after clicking "Send" or "Save", your address
book opens. Choose "<<New/Modify" and the dialogue box will expand to show
additional information including Cryptographic Service Provider. If You have the
Enhanced Cryptographic Provider it will be displayed in the drop-down list.
If you do not have the Enhanced Cryptographic Provider you can freely download the
Enhanced Cryptographic Provider from the Microsoft website IF you are a resident of the
USA or Canada
