1. BACK UP YOUR SYSTEM!
-----------------------
Don't forget to back up your hard drives before using PartitionMagic.
While PartitionMagic has been thoroughly tested, power failures,
operating system bugs, and hardware design bugs can put your data
at risk. BEFORE USING ANY UTILITY THAT MAKES SUCH EXTENSIVE CHANGES
TO YOUR HARD DISK, YOU SHOULD BACK UP YOUR DATA!
To back up your system, we recommend using PowerQuest's Drive
Image(R) or Drive Image(R) Pro. Drive Image is a state-of-the-art
disk imaging tool that allows you to create an image of your entire
system (an exact sector-for-sector copy) that can easily be restored.
Having a backup allows you to run PartitionMagic with the security
of knowing that you can get your system back up and running
quickly if you run into problems.
2. PARTITIONMAGIC 6.0 ENHANCEMENTS
----------------------------------
A. User Interface
-----------------
PartitionMagic 6.0 includes a new interface that includes
an Explorer-like window for viewing drives and the ability
to display partition maps for multiple hard disks.
B. Copy Wizard
--------------
The new Copy wizard makes it easier to copy partitions to
drives that have unused space. You no longer have to perform
separate operations to resize or delete partitions before you
can copy a partition to a disk that includes unused space.
C. Convert FAT32 Partitions to NTFS (Windows 2000 only)
-------------------------------------------------------
You can use PartitionMagic to convert FAT32 (as well as FAT)
partitions directly to NTFS. Earlier versions required that you
convert a FAT32 partition to FAT (if possible) and then convert
the FAT partition to NTFS.
D. Support for Windows 2000 and Windows Me
------------------------------------------
You can run PartitionMagic 6.0 directly from Windows 2000
Professional or from Windows Me.
E. Split Partition
------------------
You can split a FAT or FAT32 partition into two partitions and
choose which root files and folders will be stored in each
partition. The two new partitions will fill the same space on
the hard disk that the original partition occupied. You
should not use this feature to split the partition where your
operating system is installed.
F. Across the Wire (PartitionMagic Pro only)
--------------------------------------------
Using the Remote Agent, you can connect to a remote machine
and perform operations on its hard disks. Remote operations
you can perform include copying, formatting, labeling, deleting,
checking, and getting information. To use the Remote Agent, you
create a DOS boot disk using the Boot Disk Builder program.
Then you boot the remote machine with the boot disk and
connect to it from PartitionMagic over a TCP/IP network. The
disks on the remote machine then display in the PartitionMagic
main window, where you can select them and perform operations
on them.
G. Shred Partition (PartitionMagic Pro only)
--------------------------------------------
PartitionMagic Pro gives you a choice between deleting a
partition and shredding it. When you shred a partition, its
data is overwritten so it can never be restored. Shredding is
useful for high-security environments or for cleaning off a
machine before selling it.
H. Undelete
-----------
The Undelete feature enables you to restore partitions that you
deleted by accident. Whereas Undo is a way to reverse changes
you made virtually (you made the change but did not click
Apply), Undelete can restore partitions that you deleted
on the disk. You should note that partitions can only be
undeleted if you have not created other partitions or file
systems in the place where the deleted partition was on the
disk. If the partition has been overwritten by other data, you
cannot undelete it.
I. Undo
-------
You can choose to undo your last change or discard all changes.
You can undo changes from the main window or from the Pending
Operations window.
J. Password Protection
----------------------
You can set a password to restrict access to PartitionMagic.
K. Starting PartitionMagic
--------------------------
You can start PartitionMagic by right-clicking the Start menu,
folders in Windows Explorer, or the My Computer shortcut.
3. MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
------------------------------
PartitionMagic runs on DOS, Windows 95/98, Windows NT
Workstation 4.0 (with Service Pack 4 or later), Windows
2000 Professional, and Windows Me. Versions for each of these
environments are included on the installation CD.
PartitionMagic does not run on Windows NT Server. PowerQuest
markets another partitioning product, ServerMagic(TM), that is
specifically designed to support the Windows NT Server and
Novell NetWare environments.
Linux, Windows NT 3.51, Windows 3.x, and OS/2 are not supported
by native versions of PartitionMagic but are supported by the
DOS rescue disk version of PartitionMagic.
Refer to the PartitionMagic user guide for a complete list
of system requirements. You can find a searchable PDF
version of the manual (PM6.PDF) in the ENGLISH\DOCS folder
on the PartitionMagic CD. PowerQuest recommends that you
have Adobe(R) Acrobat(R) version 4.0 for best viewing
quality. You can download the Adobe Acrobat reader free
from www.adobe.com.
4. KNOWN ISSUES (ALL SYSTEMS)
-----------------------------
A. Running other applications with PartitionMagic
-------------------------------------------------
You should not run PartitionMagic while any other applications
are running. Close any running applications before starting
PartitionMagic.
B. Bad Sector Checking is ON by default
---------------------------------------
Be aware that PartitionMagic ships with bad sector checking
turned ON by default. This ensures that data is not moved or
copied to bad disk sectors. However, this causes the Create,
Move, and Resize operations to slow down considerably. Modern
hard disks are designed to avoid bad sectors automatically.
If you feel confident that bad sectors are not a problem on
your system and you want to improve the performance of
PartitionMagic, turn off Bad Sector Checking (by checking the
appropriate boxes in the "Skip bad sector checks" list box
in Preferences). Another way to verify that there are no bad
sectors on your disk is to run the Windows 95/98 ScanDisk
utility and do a surface scan before launching PartitionMagic.
C. UNC Paths Do Not Work for Installation
-----------------------------------------
If you install PartitionMagic from a network directory, you must
have a drive letter mapped to the directory. UNC (universal
naming convention) paths will not work for installation. If you
do not have a drive letter mapped to the directory, you will
receive error #0 or error #1 and installation will fail.
D. Error 2009 Encountered When Merging FAT Partitions
-----------------------------------------------------
On some merge operations, you may encounter error #2009. To
resolve the problem, create a temporary file (such as junk.txt)
in the root directory of the target partition. Then restart the
merge operation.
E. Mount Points
----------------
Under Windows 2000, if you perform operations on partitions that
include mount points, you will have to restore the mount points
after the operations are complete.
F. Across the Wire (PartitionMagic Pro only)
--------------------------------------------
If you disconnect from the network or lose power while you
are performing operations across the wire to a remote
machine, PartitionMagic will not recover gracefully. The
affected hard disk on the remote machine will be marked as
bad. To correct the error, you should 1) Run PartitionMagic
with the /IPE switch. (Change to the %systemdrive%\Program
Files\PowerQuest\PartitionMagic 6.0 folder, and start
PartitionMagic by typing PMAGIC9X /IPE or PMAGICNT /IPE.)
2) Connect to the remote machine using Remote Agent.
3) Delete the partition that was only partially copied.
4) Close PartitionMagic.
You should NOT run PartitionMagic with the /IPE switch on a
regular basis, since it causes PartitionMagic to ignore
partition errors on all drives. If you manipulate drives
with errors, you could lose data. However, if you use the
/IPE switch to resolve the problem noted above, it will not
cause data loss.
G. Using Remote Agent with in-use partitions
--------------------------------------------
If you attempt to move or copy an in-use partition from the
local machine to a remote machine, you will receive the
following error message: "Operations on remote partitions
cannot be applied in conjunction with operations that require
the machine to reboot." Typically, this error occurs if the
source partition is that where your operating system is
installed or if the partition has open data files.
If the source partition is the operating system partition, you
can work around this problem by first copying this partition to
unallocated space on a drive attached to the local machine,
rebooting the machine, then using the copied partition as the
source partition for Remote Agent operations.
If the source partition has open data files, you can work around
the problem by ensuring that any programs and services that
require use of the source partition are closed and stopped.
Please keep in mind that Remote Agent was not designed to be a
deployment tool, but rather a way to copy partitions between
machines. If you want to deploy machines, you should use
PowerQuest's Drive Image(R) Pro.
H. Remote Agent and Multiple NICs
---------------------------------
Remote Agent does not run on machines with more than one
network adapter.
5. KNOWN ISSUES (WINDOWS NT/WINDOWS 2000 ONLY)
----------------------------------------------
A. Backing up your BOOT.INI file in Windows NT
----------------------------------------------
PartitionMagic for Windows NT needs to temporarily replace your
BOOT.INI file after performing the disk manipulation operations.
It restores the file once it has finished performing the
operations and rebooting. If a failure occurs during the NT
reboot phase, your BOOT.INI file may not be restored properly.
It is a good idea to back up your BOOT.INI file before running
PartitionMagic for Windows NT.
B. Volume sets and stripe sets on Windows NT
--------------------------------------------
PartitionMagic does not support volume sets, stripe sets, stripe
sets with parity, or partitions located on disk mirror/duplex
sets configured using Windows NT Disk Administrator. Under
Windows 2000, PartitionMagic supports standard partitions
located on basic disk sets only.
C. Mixed IDE/SCSI drive configurations under Windows NT
-------------------------------------------------------
In a configuration with mixed IDE and SCSI hard drives, Windows NT
does not always see the boot drive as the first physical hard
drive. PartitionMagic displays drives in the order Windows NT
reports them. As a result, you may see your boot device as
Drive 1, 2, etc. This does not cause problems for
PartitionMagic except when setting a new active partition.
Also, PartitionMagic may incorrectly report that there is no
active partition on your system. To change your active
partition, be sure that you identify which drive is the boot
drive.
With this configuration, there is the possibility your BOOT.INI
file can be corrupted; therefore, it is recommended you back up
your BOOT.INI file before running PartitionMagic.
D. Color palette issues installing Windows NT version
-----------------------------------------------------
If you run the Windows NT version of PartitionMagic immediately
after installation, occasionally you may see color palette
problems. We recommend rebooting Windows NT before running
PartitionMagic for the first time.
E. PartitionMagic 6.0 produces new-style uppercase table
--------------------------------------------------------
The Windows 95/98/Me and MS-DOS versions of PartitionMagic
format NTFS file systems with the uppercase table used by NT 4.0
after Service Pack 4. When Windows NT 4.0 before Service Pack
4 is started after an NTFS file system is created by
PartitionMagic, it detects the new-style uppercase table and
changes it to the old version. You may see a message dialog
telling you that the conversion is occurring, but you do not
need to take any action.
F. Windows NT/Windows 2000 Boot Partition Drive Letter
------------------------------------------------------
You should not change the drive letter originally assigned to
the Windows NT/Windows 2000 boot partition (the partition where
Windows is installed). Changing the drive letter to anything
but its original designation will cause severe boot problems
and may cause your computer to be unbootable.
G. Error 183: Init Failed
-------------------------
If you attempt to run PartitionMagic on a Windows 2000
Professional machine where the boot partition (the partition
where Windows 2000 Professional is installed) is on a
dynamic disk, you will receive the following error message:
"Init failed: Error 183. Unable to identify the Windows
partition." To solve this problem, Windows 2000 must be
installed on a basic disk.
H. Error 184
------------
If you encounter error 184 when initializing PartitionMagic,
run Disk Administrator (Windows NT) or Disk Management
(Windows 2000), then start PartitionMagic again.
6. KNOWN ISSUE (WINDOWS 95 ONLY)
--------------------------------
If your computer does not include Winsock2, PartitionMagic will
not run. You may see an error message that says a required DLL
file, WS2_32.DLL, was not found, or you may see a more general
error message stating that the program (PartitionMagic) will
not launch.

7. GENERAL USAGE NOTES
----------------------
- If you run PartitionMagic from DOS: Turn off third-party disk
caches. Deactivate or unload any TSR programs that access or
modify the partitions being changed.
- Do not run PartitionMagic from a compressed drive.
- Be aware that there is no undo (after clicking Apply) if you merge
two FAT or FAT32 partitions. You must be particularly careful not to
merge two primary partitions that include operating systems, as your
computer will not be bootable if you do.
- You should run Adobe(R) Acrobat(R) reader at least once before you
attempt to open the PartitionMagic PDF documentation in the English\
Docs folder on the PartitionMagic CD. If you open PDF manuals on the
CD the first time you run Acrobat, Acrobat will display its splash
screen, display a license agreement, then disappear. If you make
a second attempt to display the PDF documentation, you will not
encounter any problems. PowerQuest recommends Adobe Acrobat
version 4.0 or later for best viewing quality. You can download
the Acrobat reader for free from www.adobe.com.
- PartitionMagic is available in English, French, German, Italian,
Portuguese, Spanish, Chinese, and Japanese. A non-Asian
language version of PartitionMagic should never be used on an
Asian language version of Windows NT/2000 Server, as this
may cause corruption of file names and partition/volume set
labels.
- Progress bars are an estimation only and may pause for several
minutes, even though PartitionMagic is still working correctly. If
you think your computer has locked up, please be patient and
PartitionMagic will finish the operation.
