  16. 1. BACK UP YOUR SYSTEM!
  17. -----------------------
  18. Don't forget to back up your hard drives before using PartitionMagic.
  19. While PartitionMagic has been thoroughly tested, power failures, 
  20. operating system bugs, and hardware design bugs can put your data 
  21. at risk. BEFORE USING ANY UTILITY THAT MAKES SUCH EXTENSIVE CHANGES 
  22. TO YOUR HARD DISK, YOU SHOULD BACK UP YOUR DATA!
  23.  
  24. To back up your system, we recommend using PowerQuest's Drive 
  25. Image(R) or Drive Image(R) Pro. Drive Image is a state-of-the-art 
  26. disk imaging tool that allows you to create an image of your entire 
  27. system (an exact sector-for-sector copy) that can easily be restored.
  28. Having a backup allows you to run PartitionMagic with the security 
  29. of knowing that you can get your system back up and running 
  30. quickly if you run into problems.

  33. 2. PARTITIONMAGIC 6.0 ENHANCEMENTS
  34. ----------------------------------
  35.  
  36.     A. User Interface
  37.     -----------------
  38.     PartitionMagic 6.0 includes a new interface that includes 
  39.     an Explorer-like window for viewing drives and the ability 
  40.     to display partition maps for multiple hard disks.
  41.  
  42.     B. Copy Wizard
  43.     --------------
  44.     The new Copy wizard makes it easier to copy partitions to
  45.     drives that have unused space. You no longer have to perform
  46.     separate operations to resize or delete partitions before you
  47.     can copy a partition to a disk that includes unused space.
  48.  
  49.     C. Convert FAT32 Partitions to NTFS (Windows 2000 only) 
  50.     -------------------------------------------------------
  51.     You can use PartitionMagic to convert FAT32 (as well as FAT)
  52.     partitions directly to NTFS. Earlier versions required that you
  53.     convert a FAT32 partition to FAT (if possible) and then convert
  54.     the FAT partition to NTFS.
  55.  
  56.     D. Support for Windows 2000 and Windows Me
  57.     ------------------------------------------
  58.     You can run PartitionMagic 6.0 directly from Windows 2000 
  59.     Professional or from Windows Me.
  60.  
  61.     E. Split Partition
  62.     ------------------
  63.     You can split a FAT or FAT32 partition into two partitions and
  64.     choose which root files and folders will be stored in each 
  65.     partition.  The two new partitions will fill the same space on 
  66.     the hard disk that the original partition occupied.  You 
  67.     should not use this feature to split the partition where your 
  68.     operating system is installed.
  69.  
  70.     F. Across the Wire (PartitionMagic Pro only)
  71.     --------------------------------------------
  72.     Using the Remote Agent, you can connect to a remote machine
  73.     and perform operations on its hard disks. Remote operations
  74.     you can perform include copying, formatting, labeling, deleting,
  75.     checking, and getting information. To use the Remote Agent, you
  76.     create a DOS boot disk using the Boot Disk Builder program.
  77.     Then you boot the remote machine with the boot disk and
  78.     connect to it from PartitionMagic over a TCP/IP network. The
  79.     disks on the remote machine then display in the PartitionMagic
  80.     main window, where you can select them and perform operations 
  81.     on them. 
  82.  
  83.     G. Shred Partition (PartitionMagic Pro only)
  84.     --------------------------------------------
  85.     PartitionMagic Pro gives you a choice between deleting a 
  86.     partition and shredding it. When you shred a partition, its 
  87.     data is overwritten so it can never be restored. Shredding is 
  88.     useful for high-security environments or for cleaning off a 
  89.     machine before selling it.
  90.  
  91.     H. Undelete
  92.     -----------
  93.     The Undelete feature enables you to restore partitions that you
  94.     deleted by accident. Whereas Undo is a way to reverse changes 
  95.     you made virtually (you made the change but did not click 
  96.     Apply), Undelete can restore partitions that you deleted
  97.     on the disk. You should note that partitions can only be
  98.     undeleted if you have not created other partitions or file
  99.     systems in the place where the deleted partition was on the
  100.     disk. If the partition has been overwritten by other data, you
  101.     cannot undelete it.
  102.  
  103.     I. Undo
  104.     -------
  105.     You can choose to undo your last change or discard all changes.
  106.     You can undo changes from the main window or from the Pending
  107.     Operations window.
  108.  
  109.     J. Password Protection
  110.     ----------------------
  111.     You can set a password to restrict access to PartitionMagic.
  112.  
  113.     K. Starting PartitionMagic
  114.     --------------------------
  115.     You can start PartitionMagic by right-clicking the Start menu,
  116.     folders in Windows Explorer, or the My Computer shortcut.

  119. 3. MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  120. ------------------------------
  121. PartitionMagic runs on DOS, Windows 95/98, Windows NT 
  122. Workstation 4.0 (with Service Pack 4 or later), Windows 
  123. 2000 Professional, and Windows Me. Versions for each of these 
  124. environments are included on the installation CD. 
  125. PartitionMagic does not run on Windows NT Server. PowerQuest 
  126. markets another partitioning product, ServerMagic(TM), that is 
  127. specifically designed to support the Windows NT Server and 
  128. Novell NetWare environments. 
  129.  
  130. Linux, Windows NT 3.51, Windows 3.x, and OS/2 are not supported
  131. by native versions of PartitionMagic but are supported by the 
  132. DOS rescue disk version of PartitionMagic.
  133.  
  134. Refer to the PartitionMagic user guide for a complete list
  135. of system requirements.  You can find a searchable PDF
  136. version of the manual (PM6.PDF) in the ENGLISH\DOCS folder 
  137. on the PartitionMagic CD.  PowerQuest recommends that you
  138. have Adobe(R) Acrobat(R) version 4.0 for best viewing
  139. quality.  You can download the Adobe Acrobat reader free
  140. from www.adobe.com.

  143. 4. KNOWN ISSUES (ALL SYSTEMS)
  144. -----------------------------
  145.  
  146.     A. Running other applications with PartitionMagic
  147.     -------------------------------------------------
  148.     You should not run PartitionMagic while any other applications 
  149.     are running.  Close any running applications before starting 
  150.     PartitionMagic.
  151.  
  152.     B. Bad Sector Checking is ON by default
  153.     ---------------------------------------
  154.     Be aware that PartitionMagic ships with bad sector checking 
  155.     turned ON by default.  This ensures that data is not moved or 
  156.     copied to bad disk sectors.  However, this causes the Create, 
  157.     Move, and Resize operations to slow down considerably.  Modern
  158.     hard disks are designed to avoid bad sectors automatically.  
  159.     If you feel confident that bad sectors are not a problem on 
  160.     your system and you want to improve the performance of 
  161.     PartitionMagic, turn off Bad Sector Checking (by checking the 
  162.     appropriate boxes in the "Skip bad sector checks" list box 
  163.     in Preferences).  Another way to verify that there are no bad 
  164.     sectors on your disk is to run the Windows 95/98 ScanDisk 
  165.     utility and do a surface scan before launching PartitionMagic.
  166.  
  167.     C. UNC Paths Do Not Work for Installation
  168.     -----------------------------------------
  169.     If you install PartitionMagic from a network directory, you must
  170.     have a drive letter mapped to the directory.  UNC (universal
  171.     naming convention) paths will not work for installation. If you
  172.     do not have a drive letter mapped to the directory, you will
  173.     receive error #0 or error #1 and installation will fail.
  174.  
  175.     D. Error 2009 Encountered When Merging FAT Partitions
  176.     -----------------------------------------------------
  177.     On some merge operations, you may encounter error #2009. To
  178.     resolve the problem, create a temporary file (such as junk.txt)
  179.     in the root directory of the target partition. Then restart the
  180.     merge operation.
  181.  
  182.     E.  Mount Points
  183.     ----------------
  184.     Under Windows 2000, if you perform operations on partitions that
  185.     include mount points, you will have to restore the mount points
  186.     after the operations are complete.
  187.  
  188.     F. Across the Wire (PartitionMagic Pro only)
  189.     --------------------------------------------
  190.     If you disconnect from the network or lose power while you
  191.      are performing operations across the wire to a remote 
  192.     machine, PartitionMagic will not recover gracefully. The 
  193.     affected hard disk on the remote machine will be marked as 
  194.     bad. To correct the error, you should 1) Run PartitionMagic 
  195.     with the /IPE switch. (Change to the %systemdrive%\Program 
  196.     Files\PowerQuest\PartitionMagic 6.0 folder, and start 
  197.     PartitionMagic by typing PMAGIC9X /IPE or PMAGICNT /IPE.) 
  198.     2) Connect to the remote machine using Remote Agent. 
  199.     3) Delete the partition that was only partially copied. 
  200.     4) Close PartitionMagic.
  201.  
  202.     You should NOT run PartitionMagic with the /IPE switch on a
  203.       regular basis, since it causes PartitionMagic to ignore 
  204.     partition errors on all drives. If you manipulate drives 
  205.     with errors, you could lose data. However, if you use the 
  206.     /IPE switch to resolve the problem noted above, it will not 
  207.     cause data loss.
  208.  
  209.     G. Using Remote Agent with in-use partitions
  210.     --------------------------------------------
  211.     If you attempt to move or copy an in-use partition from the 
  212.     local machine to a remote machine, you will receive the 
  213.     following error message: "Operations on remote partitions 
  214.     cannot be applied in conjunction with operations that require 
  215.     the machine to reboot."  Typically, this error occurs if the 
  216.     source partition is that where your operating system is 
  217.     installed or if the partition has open data files.
  218.  
  219.     If the source partition is the operating system partition, you 
  220.     can work around this problem by first copying this partition to 
  221.     unallocated space on a drive attached to the local machine, 
  222.     rebooting the machine, then using the copied partition as the 
  223.     source partition for Remote Agent operations.
  224.  
  225.     If the source partition has open data files, you can work around 
  226.     the problem by ensuring that any programs and services that 
  227.     require use of the source partition are closed and stopped.
  228.  
  229.     Please keep in mind that Remote Agent was not designed to be a 
  230.     deployment tool, but rather a way to copy partitions between 
  231.     machines.  If you want to deploy machines, you should use 
  232.     PowerQuest's Drive Image(R) Pro.
  233.  
  234.     H. Remote Agent and Multiple NICs
  235.     ---------------------------------
  236.     Remote Agent does not run on machines with more than one
  237.     network adapter.
  238.  
  239.  
  240. 5. KNOWN ISSUES (WINDOWS NT/WINDOWS 2000 ONLY)
  241. ----------------------------------------------
  242.  
  243.     A. Backing up your BOOT.INI file in Windows NT
  244.     ----------------------------------------------
  245.     PartitionMagic for Windows NT needs to temporarily replace your
  246.     BOOT.INI file after performing the disk manipulation operations.
  247.     It restores the file once it has finished performing the 
  248.     operations and rebooting.  If a failure occurs during the NT 
  249.     reboot phase, your BOOT.INI file may not be restored properly.
  250.     It is a good idea to back up your BOOT.INI file before running 
  251.     PartitionMagic for Windows NT.
  252.  
  253.     B. Volume sets and stripe sets on Windows NT
  254.     --------------------------------------------
  255.     PartitionMagic does not support volume sets, stripe sets, stripe 
  256.     sets with parity, or partitions located on disk mirror/duplex 
  257.     sets configured using Windows NT Disk Administrator.  Under 
  258.     Windows 2000, PartitionMagic supports standard partitions 
  259.     located on basic disk sets only.
  260.  
  261.     C. Mixed IDE/SCSI drive configurations under Windows NT
  262.     -------------------------------------------------------
  263.     In a configuration with mixed IDE and SCSI hard drives, Windows NT
  264.     does not always see the boot drive as the first physical hard 
  265.     drive. PartitionMagic displays drives in the order Windows NT 
  266.     reports them.  As a result, you may see your boot device as 
  267.     Drive 1, 2, etc.  This does not cause problems for 
  268.     PartitionMagic except when setting a new active partition.  
  269.     Also, PartitionMagic may incorrectly report that there is no 
  270.     active partition on your system.  To change your active 
  271.     partition, be sure that you identify which drive is the boot 
  272.     drive. 
  273.     
  274.     With this configuration, there is the possibility your BOOT.INI
  275.     file can be corrupted; therefore, it is recommended you back up 
  276.     your BOOT.INI file before running PartitionMagic.
  277.  
  278.     D. Color palette issues installing Windows NT version
  279.     -----------------------------------------------------
  280.     If you run the Windows NT version of PartitionMagic immediately
  281.     after installation, occasionally you may see color palette 
  282.     problems.  We recommend rebooting Windows NT before running 
  283.     PartitionMagic for the first time.
  284.  
  285.     E. PartitionMagic 6.0 produces new-style uppercase table
  286.     --------------------------------------------------------
  287.     The Windows 95/98/Me and MS-DOS versions of PartitionMagic 
  288.     format NTFS file systems with the uppercase table used by NT 4.0 
  289.     after Service Pack 4.  When Windows NT 4.0 before Service Pack 
  290.     4 is started after an NTFS file system is created by 
  291.     PartitionMagic, it detects the new-style uppercase table and 
  292.     changes it to the old version.  You may see a message dialog
  293.     telling you that the conversion is occurring, but you do not
  294.     need to take any action.
  295.  
  296.     F. Windows NT/Windows 2000 Boot Partition Drive Letter
  297.     ------------------------------------------------------
  298.     You should not change the drive letter originally assigned to 
  299.     the Windows NT/Windows 2000 boot partition (the partition where
  300.     Windows is installed).  Changing the drive letter to anything
  301.     but its original designation will cause severe boot problems 
  302.     and may cause your computer to be unbootable.
  303.  
  304.     G. Error 183: Init Failed
  305.     -------------------------
  306.     If you attempt to run PartitionMagic on a Windows 2000
  307.     Professional machine where the boot partition (the partition
  308.     where Windows 2000 Professional is installed) is on a 
  309.     dynamic disk, you will receive the following error message: 
  310.     "Init failed: Error 183.  Unable to identify the Windows
  311.     partition."  To solve this problem, Windows 2000 must be
  312.     installed on a basic disk.
  313.  
  314.     H. Error 184
  315.     ------------
  316.     If you encounter error 184 when initializing PartitionMagic,
  317.     run Disk Administrator (Windows NT) or Disk Management 
  318.     (Windows 2000), then start PartitionMagic again.

  321. 6. KNOWN ISSUE (WINDOWS 95 ONLY)
  322. --------------------------------
  323. If your computer does not include Winsock2, PartitionMagic will 
  324. not run.  You may see an error message that says a required DLL 
  325. file, WS2_32.DLL, was not found, or you may see a more general 
  326. error message stating that the program (PartitionMagic) will 
  327. not launch.
  328.

  341. 7. GENERAL USAGE NOTES
  342. ----------------------
  343. - If you run PartitionMagic from DOS:  Turn off third-party disk 
  344. caches.  Deactivate or unload any TSR programs that access or 
  345. modify the partitions being changed.
  346.  
  347. - Do not run PartitionMagic from a compressed drive.
  348.  
  349. - Be aware that there is no undo (after clicking Apply) if you merge 
  350. two FAT or FAT32 partitions. You must be particularly careful not to 
  351. merge two primary partitions that include operating systems, as your 
  352. computer will not be bootable if you do.
  353.  
  354. - You should run Adobe(R) Acrobat(R) reader at least once before you
  355. attempt to open the PartitionMagic PDF documentation in the English\
  356. Docs folder on the PartitionMagic CD.  If you open PDF manuals on the
  357. CD the first time you run Acrobat, Acrobat will display its splash 
  358. screen, display a license agreement, then disappear.  If you make 
  359. a second attempt to display the PDF documentation, you will not 
  360. encounter any problems.  PowerQuest recommends Adobe Acrobat 
  361. version 4.0 or later for best viewing quality.  You can download 
  362. the Acrobat reader for free from www.adobe.com.
  363.  
  364. - PartitionMagic is available in English, French, German, Italian,
  365. Portuguese, Spanish, Chinese, and Japanese.  A non-Asian 
  366. language version of PartitionMagic should never be used on an
  367. Asian language version of Windows NT/2000 Server, as this
  368. may cause corruption of file names and partition/volume set
  369. labels.
  370.   
  371. - Progress bars are an estimation only and may pause for several 
  372. minutes, even though PartitionMagic is still working correctly.  If 
  373. you think your computer has locked up, please be patient and 
  374. PartitionMagic will finish the operation.
