  8. This document contains detailed information about some
  9. features of Norton Internet Security and Norton 
  10. Personal Firewall.  Note that the release
  11. notes may refer to features that are not in the
  12. product you have installed, as it covers three 
  13. products with different features.

  40. Blocking ads speeds up download time
  41. --------------------------------------------------------
  42. The ad blocking feature does not block all
  43. advertisements on the Internet, but it can speed up
  44. download time when websites contain several ads. For
  45. information on blocking ads not blocked by Norton
  46. Internet Security, see the User's Guide or Help.

  49. Blocking ads can block other Web elements
  50. --------------------------------------------------------
  51. Blocking ads prevents specific HTML strings from being
  52. downloaded to a Web browser. This can prevent other Web
  53. elements from appearing in the browser in addition to
  54. advertisements. It can also cause script errors on some
  55. pages. If you visit a site that does not download 
  56. properly, try disabling the Ad Blocking feature.

  63. Blocking ads blocks graphical advertisements
  64. --------------------------------------------------------
  65. The Norton Internet Security ad blocking feature blocks
  66. graphical advertisements and pictures. It is not
  67. effective against text-based or script-based
  68. advertisements.
  69.

  71. Blocking applications from accessing the Internet
  72. --------------------------------------------------------
  73. Norton Internet Security restricts applications from
  74. accessing the Internet. It does not prevent someone from
  75. running the application.
  76.  
  77. When some programs cannot access the Internet, they may
  78. respond by crashing, freezing, or reporting problems
  79. with your Internet connection. The results depend on how
  80. the program was designed.
  81.

  83. Blocking cookies does not prevent cookie creation
  84. --------------------------------------------------------
  85. Blocking cookies does not prevent the cookie from being
  86. stored on your hard disk. It prevents your browser from
  87. sending the cookie when a Website requests it. Norton
  88. CleanSweep and other similar products contain features
  89. to remove cookies from your hard disk.

  92. Blocking browser type and version is off by default
  93. --------------------------------------------------------
  94. By default, Norton Internet Security does not block
  95. information about the type of browser you are using
  96. because many Web sites depend on this information to
  97. display Web pages tailored for specific browsers.

  99. Blocking this information can cause Web page errors, or
  100. display warnings about updating your browser.
  101.  
  102. To block information about the type and version of
  103. browser you are using:
  104. 1. Open Norton Internet Security.
  105. 2. Click Options and click Advanced Options.
  106. 3. Under the Web tab, click the privacy tab and change
  107.    the Browser (User-agent) settings.

  110. Blocking popup windows is limited
  111. --------------------------------------------------------
  112. The Block Script Popups Only feature blocks the most
  113. common methods Web sites use to open additional browser
  114. windows, but does not block all methods. Even with this
  115. feature turned on, you might find Web sites where pop-up
  116. windows are not blocked.
  117.  
  118. Some Web sites, such as Microsoft's Windows Critical
  119. Update, will not operate correctly when you block script
  120. popup windows.

  123. Blocking scripts only blocks scripts on Web page
  124. --------------------------------------------------------
  125. The advanced feature to Block All JavaScript blocks any
  126. JavaScript embedded in Web pages. However, it does not
  127. block JavaScript found in form objects or in external
  128. script (.JS) files.

  130. Blocking JavaScript causes errors on Web pages that
  131. require JavaScript for proper display or navigation, and
  132. should only be used by advanced users.

  135. Creating Firewall Rules for N/A programs
  136. --------------------------------------------------------
  137. If Norton Internet Security cannot identify a program or
  138. process that is attempting to access the Internet, it
  139. displays the name of the process as N/A. If you create a
  140. firewall rule for N/A programs, make sure the rule
  141. blocks or permits the connection for a specific port or
  142. address. If you create a rule to permit
  143. or block N/A programs  for all ports or addresses,
  144. Norton Internet Security will use that rule for every
  145. program it cannot identify.

  148. Firewall alerts are cached
  149. --------------------------------------------------------
  150. Sometimes Internet-enabled applications send requests to
  151. several computers to contact your machine. If you are
  152. using the Firewall Rule Assistant, you could see several
  153. alerts. Multiple alerts are cached in Norton Internet
  154. Security. This can cause alerts to appear even if you
  155. close the original program that caused the alert.
  156. Specific examples include multiplayer Internet games
  157. like Unreal Tournament or Gamespy.
  158.

  160. Incompatibility with Regclean
  161. --------------------------------------------------------
  162. Running some versions of Microsoft's Regclean power toy
  163. can break Norton Internet Security so that it stops
  164. working properly. To fix this problem, reinstall Norton
  165. Internet Security, or undo the registry cleanup. The
  166. registry cleanup and repair functions in Norton
  167. Utilities and Norton CleanSweep do not cause this
  168. problem.

  171. Permitted sites can contain items from blocked sites
  172. --------------------------------------------------------
  173. When you specify a list of permitted Websites, content
  174. from all other Websites is blocked. If a site reference
  175. graphics or other items from other sites, these items
  176. are blocked even though they appear to be from the same
  177. Web site.
  178.  
  179. These are some steps you can take to reduce these
  180. situations:
  181.  
  182. - Use domain names instead of more specific Web site
  183.   names. For example, permit the site example.com
  184.   instead of images.example.com to allow the content 
  185.   from the example domain. This allows access to all the
  186.   websites within that domain, including www.example.com,
  187.   help.example.com, images.example.com or any other
  188.   sites in that domain.
  189.   
  190. - If you are viewing a permitted site and notice images
  191.   that are blocked, open the Event Log and look at the
  192.   information under the Restrictions tab. This shows the
  193.   items that were blocked from the Web site you are
  194.   viewing. Then add the blocked sites to the permitted
  195.   list so the blocked images will appear.
  196.   
  197. These steps are only useful if you are specifying which
  198. sites are permitted. If you use the Specify Blocked
  199. Sites option, everything that does not fall into a
  200. blocked category is permitted.

  203. Referring address blocking is for browser only
  204. --------------------------------------------------------
  205. Although Norton Internet Security blocks the information
  206. from your browser about the last Web address you
  207. visited, it cannot block this information when it is
  208. passed from a Web server. For example, if you visit a
  209. site that refers you to another site on the same Web
  210. server, the Web server might transfer the referring
  211. information internally. This information does not come
  212. from your browser, and is not blocked by Norton Internet
  213. Security. These occurrences should not cause privacy or
  214. security concern.

  217. Restricted account users do not see prompts
  218. --------------------------------------------------------
  219. Norton Internet Security lets you enable, block, or
  220. prompt the user for various settings. However,
  221. restricted account users do not receive prompts. For
  222. restricted accounts, any item set to prompt the user is
  223. automatically blocked without warning.

  226. Showing animated .gif files after blocking them
  227. --------------------------------------------------------
  228. One of the advanced options lets you prevent animated
  229. .gif files from repeating their animation. This feature
  230. modifies incoming .gif files to prevent them from
  231. animating. To show the animation of a modified .gif file
  232. again, turn off animated .gif blocking, clear your
  233. browser's cache and revisit the Web site where you found
  234. the file so you can download it again.

  237. Terminating http connections
  238. --------------------------------------------------------
  239. Norton Internet Security lets you terminate most types
  240. of network connections, but terminating http connections
  241. requires that you close your Web browser software.

  244. Web Site Blocking and Browser History
  245. --------------------------------------------------------
  246. Most web browsers keep pages in a hard drive cache to
  247. improve performance, and some browsers support "offline
  248. browsing", where they download entire web pages to your
  249. hard disk.  If these pages are viewed or downloaded by
  250. one account, they may be viewable by another account who
  251. would normally have these pages blocked with Parental
  252. Control.  Empty your web browser's cache to solve this
  253. problem.

  256. Web Browser Compatibility
  257. --------------------------------------------------------
  258. Some features of Norton Internet Security, such as
  259. the web-based subscription update, are designed for 
  260. modern web browsers.  If you do not have a version 4.0+ 
  261. browser from Microsoft or Netscape, you may not be able 
  262. to use these features.

  265. Hiding your computer name from the Internet
  266. --------------------------------------------------------
  267. In its default configuration, Norton Internet Security
  268. and Norton Personal Firewall 2001 hides your computer 
  269. name and share information from being seen over the 
  270. Internet if you have Microsoft File & Print Sharing 
  271. enabled.  This is a change from version 2000.
  272.  
  273. The ability to share the computer name is required for 
  274. some cable modem implementations, but is not necessary 
  275. for most systems.  If you need to share this information
  276. in order to connect to your internet service provider,
  277. please review the "Compatibility with Cable Modems"
  278. document on the Start Menu / Programs / Norton Internet
  279. Security (or Norton Personal Firewall) / Product Support
  280. for information on how to add this.
