  32. INTRODUCTION
  33. -----------------------------------------------------------------------
  34. Total Recorder is a sound recording and playing program. It records 
  35. analog sound digitized by a sound card, as well as sound generated, or 
  36. requested, by other computer programs, such as RealPlayer, Windows 
  37. Media Player, Quick Time, WinAmp, and many others. Recorded sound is 
  38. saved in wave-file format.

  40. For example, you can use Total Recorder to record:
  41. - audio from the Internet, either audio files or live streams
  42. - music from a game program
  43. - a conversation, if you use an Internet telephony program.
  44.  
  45. Total Recorder uses a virtual sound driver to capture the sound output 
  46. from another program. By installing this driver, and setting this 
  47. device as the default, different sound reproducing programs send their 
  48. output stream to Total Recorder's driver and not to the driver of a 
  49. real device. Total Recorder then passes the information to the sound 
  50. card driver.

  52. Total Recorder has a built-in scheduler. This allows you to 
  53. automatically record a show at a given time for later playback or you 
  54. can use the scheduler as an alarm. Note that this latter function does
  55. not require registration.

  58. WHAT'S NEW WITH VERSION 2.2?
  59. -----------------------------------------------------------------------
  60. In addition to maintenance, Version 2.2 adds the following features: 
  61. - Support for Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000.
  62. - The ability to resample a recording (i.e. change sound stream 
  63.   parameters). Resampling can be done either during the recording 
  64.   process or when you save a recording. 
  65. - The maximum recording size is no longer limited to 2GB. It is now 
  66.   possible to record up to 49 continuous days. However, since an 
  67.   individual .wav file has a limit of 4GB, a long recording must be 
  68.   broken into pieces in order for it to be saved.
  69. - A save progress indicator.
  70. - The ability to increase the priority of the Total Recorder program 
  71.   and provide cleaner recordings.
  72. - The ability to normalize the volume of a recording.

  77. In addition to maintenance, Version 2.1 adds the following features: 
  78. - Accelerated recording/converting. This allows you to convert a sound
  79.   file to standard wave format without listening to it. This operation
  80.   normally takes a fraction of the time it would require to play the 
  81.   file.
  82. - Markers. These allow you to select and save only part of a recording
  83.   or part of an existing wave file.
  84. - The ability to continue recording to the same file after it was 
  85.   stopped.
  86. - A level indicator reflects the amplitude of a signal during recording
  87.   and playback.
  88. - The ability to have more than one open copy of Total Recorder (like 
  89.   in version 1.0).

  92. WHAT'S NEW WITH VERSION 2.0?
  93. -----------------------------------------------------------------------
  94. Version 2.0 adds many new features, including the following: 
  95. - Capturing and recording of sound streams that programs request from a 
  96.   sound card. This allows full duplex recording of Internet phone conver-
  97.   sations when using programs such as NetMeeting and VoxPhone.   
  98. - Recording from CD, microphone and other input lines
  99. - Built-in scheduler that allows you to program jobs (record or playback)
  100.   to start at a given time, similar to programming a VCR 
  101. - Command line parameters that allow you to use an external scheduler 
  102.   such as Microsoft Task Scheduler to schedule a recording or playback
  103. - Automatic installation and uninstallation of the virtual device driver.

  106. SYSTEM REQUIREMENT

  108. To use Total Recorder, you need the following:
  109.    - an IBM compatible computer
  110.    - a sound card 
  111.    - Microsoft Windows 95, 98, or 2000, or Windows NT 4.0.

  114. PROGRAM RESTRICTIONS
  115. -----------------------------------------------------------------------
  116. Total Recorder records wave-type sound streams only. It cannot record 
  117. any of the following:
  118. - Sound reproduced by means of MIDI-output, unless your sound card has 
  119. a special MIDI synthesis line (most sound cards have this feature).
  120. - Sound reproduced by programs developed for systems other than Windows
  121. 95/98/2000 or NT (e.g. DOS programs executing in DOS sessions).

  123. Total Recorder can record only one output and one input sound stream at
  124. a time. If a sound card allows simultaneous output of several 
  125. wave-streams and can mix these streams itself, then Total Recorder can 
  126. only record one of these streams.

  135. Total Recorder is shipped via the Internet, as a self-extracting 
  136. (totrec22.exe) or regular (totrec22.zip) archive, and consists of the 
  137. files listed below. The following table indicates each file name, a 
  138. description, and the environments in which each file is required.

  161. SPECIFIC INFORMATION FOR WINDOWS NT

  163. To install Total Recorder on Windows NT, you need the ôLoad and Unload 
  164. Device Driversö user right. Normally, only administrative users have 
  165. this right.

  167. To use the Total Recorder program, you do not need any special rights. 
  168. However, the Total Recorder setup program changes settings only for the
  169. user who installed the program. Any other user must manual set the 
  170. Total Recorder driver as a preferred device (see "Installing/
  171. Uninstalling the Total Recorder Driver Manually").

  174. SPECIFIC INFORMATION FOR WINDOWS 2000
  175. -----------------------------------------------------------------------
  176. Windows 2000 is a member of the Windows NT product family. All of the 
  177. information in the previous section (ôInstalling Total Recorder in a 
  178. Windows NT Environmentö) applies to Windows 2000.
  179.  
  180. If you are planning to upgrade your Windows 95/98 system to Windows 
  181. 2000, you must take the following steps:
  182.  
  183. 1. Before upgrading your Windows environment, uninstall Total Recorder.
  184. 2. After the upgrade is complete, reinstall Total Recorder.
  185. 3. Re-register Total Recorder. Have you registration information 
  186.    available.
  187.  
  188. Note: Total Recorder will not work if you simply upgrade your Windows 
  189. environment to Windows 2000 without taking the steps described above.

  192. INSTALLATION NOTES

  194. Follow this procedure to install Total Recorder on your PC:
  195.  
  196. 1. Download the self-extracting archive totrec22.exe
  197.    (http://www.highcriteria.com/download/totrec22.exe) and run it.
  198.

  201.    Download the regular ZIP archive totrec22.zip
  202.    (http://www.highcriteria.com/download/totrec22.zip). Unzip it and 
  203.    run TRInst.exe.  Note that you must unzip the entire archive not 
  204.    just TRInst.exe.  
  205.  
  206.    The installation program creates a directory for Total Recorder, 
  207.    copies all of the files to that directory, creates a Program Group
  208.    called Total Recorder, installs a driver, and sets it as the default
  209.    device for both playback and recording.
  210.  
  211. 2. Version 2.2 cannot coexist on the same machine with any previous 
  212.    version (1.0, 2.0, or 2.1). If you have a previous version 
  213.    installed, you are prompted to uninstall it.
  214.  
  215. 3. After installing Version 2.2 over a previous version you must 
  216.    restart Windows. Under Windows NT or Windows 2000 you must reboot 
  217.    your PC, even after the initial installation. In all cases you will
  218.    receive a prompt.

  221. CONFIGURING TOTAL RECORDER

  223. The configuration program allows you to set the following:
  224. - suppression of system sounds
  225. - preferred playback and recording devices
  226. - priority of Total Recorder program
  227. - directory for temporary files
  228. - default directory
  229. - actions when a recording is about to be overwritten
  230. - ability to keep different sound streams as a part of one stereo wave
  231.   file
  232. - debug mode for driver.

  234. To configure Total Recorder, start the program and select "Options" - 
  235. "Settings". You are presented with a property sheet with the tabs: 
  236. "System", "Open/save", and "Debug".

  239.                         REGISTERING TOTAL RECORDER

  241. After installing and verifying the program works properly, you should 
  242. obtain a registration key from High Criteria. If the program is 
  243. unregistered then your recordings are limited to 40 seconds each and 
  244. you can use the scheduler only as an alarm.

  246. To receive the registration key:
  247.  
  248. 1. Follow the instructions given on High Criteria Inc.'s web site at 
  249.    the following address: http://www.highcriteria.com/products.htm.
  250. 2. Select "Help" - "Registration". Type in the same name you used to 
  251.    obtain the registration key and your registration key. Note that 
  252.    after registration this menu item is not accessible.

  255.                         UNINSTALLING TOTAL RECORDER

  257. To uninstall Total Recorder, use "Start", "Settings", "Control Panel", 
  258. "Add/Remove Programs". The program remains in memory until you reboot.
