  61. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  62. ===================

  64. To run Internet Explorer 4.0, your system must meet the following 
  65. minimum requirements:
  66.  
  67. - A 486 with a 66 Mhz processor (Pentium processor recommended)
  68. - For Microsoft Windows 95:
  69.   12 MB of RAM minimum, 16 MB with Active Desktop
  70. á For Microsoft Windows NT:
  71.   16 MB of RAM minimum, 24 MB with Active Desktop
  72. - For Microsoft Windows NT: 
  73.   You must be running Service Pack 3 (or higher)
  74. - 40 to 70 MB of hard-disk space (depending on installation type) 
  75. - Mouse
  76. - Modem
  77. - CD-ROM
  78.

  80. SETUP
  81. =====
  82.  
  83. - Before you install Internet Explorer 4.0, you should make sure that no
  84.   scheduled tasks are running, because they might interfere with the Setup 
  85.   process.
  86.  
  87. - CAUTION: Do not install any previous version of Internet Explorer over 
  88.   Internet Explorer 4.0. If you need to install an earlier version of Internet 
  89.   Explorer, you must uninstall Internet Explorer 4.0 first.
  90.  
  91. - It is recommended that you download Internet Explorer 4.0 to a 
  92.   directory that does not contain any other files and that will not 
  93.   be used for any other purpose. If for some reason you want to 
  94.   uninstall the Setup files, the download directory will be removed. 
  95.   For information about removing the Setup files, see "Installing Internet 
  96.   Explorer 4.0."
  97.  
  98. Installing Internet Explorer 4.0
  99. --------------------------------
  100. Whether you choose to install over the network or to download the 
  101. installation files to your hard disk, the Setup files are copied to 
  102. your hard disk. This is so you can reinstall more quickly if you need 
  103. to. If you want to reclaim the disk space, you can remove the Setup 
  104. directory by double-clicking the Add/Remove Programs icon in Control 
  105. Panel and then clicking Internet Explorer 4.0 Setup Files.
  106.  
  107. You cannot install Internet Explorer 4.0 to or run it from a 
  108. network drive. However, you can download it to a network drive. 
  109. To do this, you must map the network drive to a drive letter on 
  110. your computer. You cannot download Internet Explorer 4.0 to a 
  111. UNC path.
  112.  
  113. If Internet Explorer 4.0 appears to stop responding at the end 
  114. of Setup, you need to restart your computer manually. 
  115.  
  116. Running Internet Explorer 4.0 on Windows NT
  117. -------------------------------------------
  118. NOTE: You must have administrative privileges to install and 
  119. uninstall this program on Windows NT. This includes having 
  120. administrative privileges the first time you start your computer 
  121. after installing or uninstalling.
  122.  
  123. You must restart your computer after installing Internet Explorer 
  124. 4.0. This is also true for some add-on components.
  125.  
  126. If you're running Internet Explorer 4.0 on Windows NT, you must 
  127. set user permissions to Full Control for the Temporary Internet 
  128. Files folder (cache). The user must have write permission in order 
  129. for files to be stored in the Temporary Internet Files folder.
  130.  
  131. If you must reinstall Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3 (SP3) after 
  132. you install Internet Explorer 4.0, you must specify when prompted 
  133. that you do not want it to overwrite any files that are newer. 
  134. After SP3 is reinstalled, carry out the following steps to update 
  135. the registry:
  136.  
  137. 1. Click the Start button, and then click Run.
  138. 2. Type the following: regsvr32 rsabase.dll
  139. 3. Click OK.
  140.  
  141. Running Internet Explorer 4.0 on a Dual-Boot Operating System
  142. -------------------------------------------------------------
  143. If your computer is set up to dual boot between two operating 
  144. systems, you must install multiple instances of Internet Explorer 
  145. 4.0 in a separate directory for each operating system. For example, 
  146. if you are running Windows 95 and Windows NT, you might want to 
  147. install Internet Explorer 4.0 in C:\IE95 for Windows 95 and in C:\IENT 
  148. for Windows NT. Do not try to use the same installation of Internet 
  149. Explorer with two operating systems. If you later uninstall Internet 
  150. Explorer 4.0, one of your operating systems may be left unbootable if 
  151. you don't follow these steps.
  152.  
  153. Note also that if you dual boot between two operating systems 
  154. that are configured to share a Program Files folder, and you 
  155. uninstall an add-on component from one of your Internet Explorer 
  156. 4.0 installations, it will be removed from both of them. This is 
  157. because the add-on files are stored in the Program Files folder.
  158.  
  159. Uninstalling Internet Explorer 4.0 from NT4.0 & Windows 95
  160. ----------------------------------
  161. You can uninstall Internet Explorer 4.0 by carrying out the 
  162. following steps:
  163.  
  164. 1. In Control Panel, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  165. 2. Click Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0, and then click Add/Remove.
  166. 3. Follow the instructions on your screen.
  167.  
  168. Adding or Removing the Windows Desktop Update from NT4.0 & Windows 95
  169. ---------------------------------------------
  170. To add or remove the Windows Desktop Update, carry out the following 
  171. steps:
  172.  
  173. 1. In Control Panel, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  174. 2. Click Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0, and then click Add/Remove.
  175. 3. To remove it, click "Remove the Windows Desktop Update component 
  176.    but keep the Internet Explorer 4.0 Web browser."
  177.  
  178.    To add it, click "Add the Windows Desktop Update component from 
  179.    Web site," and then follow the instructions on the screen.
  180.  
  181. NOTE: For this release, clicking "Add the Windows Desktop Update 
  182. component from Web Site" opens the Internet Explorer 4.0 components 
  183. download page so you can download and install the Windows Desktop 
  184. Update. If you have previously downloaded or installed the Windows 
  185. Desktop Update, you can enable it without connecting to the Internet 
  186. by running IE4setup.exe from your local Internet Explorer 4.0 Setup 
  187. folder. When prompted, click Yes to enable the Windows Desktop 
  188. Update, and then choose to upgrade only newer items.
  189.  
  190. Installing Internet Explorer in a Language Different 
  191.   from the Operating System Language
  192. ----------------------------------------------------
  193. If you install a version of Internet Explorer in a language different from the language of the operating system you are running, the Windows Desktop update will not be installed. If you have the windows desktop update already installed, you can not install a different language of Internet Explorer.

  195. CONFIGURING SUBSCRIPTIONS IN AMERICA ONLINE
  196. ===========================================
  197.  
  198. If you want, you can manually update your subscriptions through 
  199. America Online by carrying out the following steps:
  200.  
  201. 1. Right-click the Internet Explorer icon, and then click Properties.
  202. 2. Click the Connection tab.
  203. 3. Select the "Connect to the Internet using a local area network" 
  204.    check box.
  205. 4. In the Proxy Server area, make sure that the "Access the Internet 
  206.    using a proxy server" check box is not selected.
  207. 5. Connect to America Online, and then log on.
  208. 6. Open Internet Explorer.
  209. 7. Click the Favorites menu, and then click Update All Subscriptions.
  210.  
  211.  
  212. NOTE TO FRENCH USERS OF INTERNET EXPLORER 4.0
  213. =============================================
  214.  
  215. In order to comply with French laws on the use of encryption 
  216. material, the following features have been disabled for users 
  217. in France:
  218.  
  219. - S/MIME support in Outlook Express
  220. - The Microsoft Wallet secure storage feature
  221. - PCT 1.0 support
  222.  
  223. However, SSL 2.0 and SSL 3.0 support are authorized, and are 
  224. still enabled.
  225.  
  226.  
  227. KNOWN ISSUES
  228. ============
  229.  
  230. PICS Support in Internet Explorer 4.0
  231. -------------------------------------
  232. The Internet Explorer Content Advisor uses PICS (Platform for 
  233. Internet Content Selection) ratings. Please be aware of the 
  234. following items:
  235.  
  236. - The PICS rating is not used for documents using the file:// 
  237.   protocol.
  238.  
  239. - If you have ratings enabled, they will apply to items that 
  240.   you have added to your Active Desktop. A "Navigation Canceled" 
  241.   message will be displayed instead of Web content for Active 
  242.   Desktop items that are blocked due to content ratings. 
  243.  
  244. Some Programs Do Not Detect Browser Version Correctly
  245. -----------------------------------------------------
  246. Some third-party Internet-based programs use nonstandard 
  247. methods of detecting the current browser version. If you 
  248. experience this in a program you are running, please contact 
  249. the program vendor for an update.
  250.  
  251. Temporary Internet Files are Replicated 
  252.   to the Home Directory of Roaming Users
  253. ----------------------------------------
  254. The Temporary Internet Files folder is replicated to the home 
  255. directory of users with roaming profiles. If you are running 
  256. Internet Explorer 4.0 on a Windows NT system, this may cause 
  257. disk-space problems on servers with numerous roaming users or 
  258. with several users who have with large caches. To set cache size, 
  259. click the View menu, click Internet Options, and then click the 
  260. Settings button.
  261.  
  262. Access Aptiva Issues with Internet Explorer 4.0
  263. -----------------------------------------------
  264. The Access Aptiva component of the IBM Aptiva PC does not render 
  265. properly with Internet Explorer 4.0. To get an updated version of 
  266. the Access Aptiva program, you can either go to the IBM home page 
  267. at http://www.us.pc.ibm.com/aptiva, or click IBM Update Connector 
  268. on the Start menu, which automatically downloads the updated 
  269. components.

  272. APPLICATION COMPATIBILITY
  273. =========================
  274.  
  275. Adobe Acrobat: Using Internet Explorer 4.0 with 
  276. Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.0
  277. -----------------------------------------------
  278. Using the Adobe Acrobat .pdf viewer in Internet Explorer 4.0 
  279. may not work. You can download the latest version from 
  280. http://www.adobe.com.
  281.  
  282. Also, if Content Advisor is turned on in Internet Explorer 4.0, 
  283. you cannot view .pdf files in the browser.
  284.  
  285.  
  286. Microsoft Money: Requires Updated 128-bit Extensions
  287. ----------------------------------------------------
  288. If you install Microsoft Money on a computer running Internet 
  289. Explorer 4.0, please go to the following Web site: 
  290.  
  291.      http://www.microsoft.com/ie/ie40/download/128bit.htm
  292.  
  293. in order to get the updated 128-bit extensions required for online banking with Microsoft Money (U.S. and Canadian users only). Until these extensions are installed, you will not be able to do online banking. If you are already at 128-bit level and you upgrade to a newer version of Internet Explorer, the settings will remain 128-bit, so you don't need to update the extensions again.

  295. Norton Utilities and Norton Navigator
  296. -------------------------------------
  297. - Norton Utilities version 2.0 is not compatible with the Internet 
  298.   Explorer 4.0 Recycle Bin because of new features that have been 
  299.   added to Internet Explorer.
  300.  
  301. - If you are running Norton Navigator, note that the Control Panel 
  302.   shortcuts on the Start menu do not work.
  303.  
  304. - If you reposition the taskbar to the left or right side of your 
  305.   desktop, the Norton Navigator quick launch area disappears.
  306.  
  307. - If you are running Norton Navigator, you need to disable the 
  308.   Norton Taskbar feature in order to use the functionality of 
  309.   the new Internet Explorer 4.0 taskbar.
  310.

  314. Procomm Plus 95: Browser Properties Control Doesn't Work
  315. --------------------------------------------------------
  316. In the Procomm Plus 95 Web browser, the Browser Properties control on 
  317. the Setup menu does not work. However, you can set browser properties 
  318. by double-clicking the Internet icon in the Windows Control Panel. 
  319. Property settings for the Internet Explorer 4.0 browser will also 
  320. apply to the Procomm browser.
  321.  
  322. Telcom Fax: Unable to Send Network Faxes
  323. ----------------------------------------
  324. This product currently does not work with Internet Explorer 4.0. 
  325. For information about Telcom Fax 4.0, which is compatible with 
  326. Internet Explorer 4.0, contact the manufacturer or visit their 
  327. eb site at http://www.ltc.com.
  328.
