  58. To run Internet Explorer 5.01 and Internet Tools, your system 
  59. must meet the following minimum requirements:
  60.  
  61. - A 486 with a 66 MHz processor (Pentium processor recommended)
  62.  
  63. - For Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows 98:
  64.   16 MB (megabytes) of RAM minimum
  65.  
  66.   For Microsoft Windows NT(R) 4.0:
  67.   32 MB of RAM minimum
  68.  
  69. - For Microsoft Windows NT 4.0: 
  70.   You must be running Service Pack 3 (or higher)
  71.

  91. Disk-Space Requirements for Internet Explorer 5.01 Installation
  92. ---------------------------------------------------------------
  93. Internet Explorer 5.01 and Internet Tools Setup installs the 
  94. majority of its files to the drive where the Windows operating 
  95. system is installed, regardless of the installation location you 
  96. chose. To free up space on your hard disk in order to meet the 
  97. Internet Explorer 5.01 disk-space installation requirements, 
  98. you must free up space on the drive where the Windows operating 
  99. system is installed.
  100.  
  101. Installing Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4
  102. ----------------------------------------
  103. After you install Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4 but before you 
  104. install Internet Explorer 5.01, you may see a message recommend-
  105. ing that you install one or both of the following Service Packs 
  106. to resolve known Year 2000 issues:
  107.  
  108.   - Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 1
  109.   - Microsoft Data Access Components 2.0 Service Pack 1
  110.  
  111. Internet Explorer 5.01 resolves the Year 2000 issues addressed in 
  112. these Service Packs.
  113.  
  114.  
  115. SETUP
  116. =====
  117.  
  118. Installing Internet Explorer 5.01 and Internet Tools
  119. ----------------------------------------------------
  120. Whether you choose to install over the network or download the 
  121. installation files to your hard disk, some or all of the Setup 
  122. files are copied to your hard disk. This allows you to reinstall 
  123. more quickly if necessary. If you want to reclaim the disk space, 
  124. you can remove the Setup directory by double-clicking the 
  125. Add/Remove Programs icon in Control Panel and then clicking 
  126. Internet Explorer 5.01. In the Microsoft Internet Explorer Setup 
  127. dialog box, click the Advanced button, and then click "Remove the 
  128. folder containing Internet Explorer setup files."
  129.  
  130. You cannot install Internet Explorer 5.01 to or run it from a 
  131. network drive. However, you can download it to a network drive. 
  132. To do this, you must map the network drive to a drive letter on 
  133. your computer. You cannot download Internet Explorer 5.01 to a 
  134. UNC path.
  135.  
  136. Running Internet Explorer 5.01 on Microsoft Windows NT 4.0
  137. ----------------------------------------------------------
  138. NOTE: You must have administrative privileges to install 
  139.       and uninstall this program on Windows NT. This includes 
  140.       having administrative privileges the first time you 
  141.       start your computer after installing or uninstalling.
  142.  
  143. You must restart your computer after installing Internet 
  144. Explorer 5.01. This is also true for some add-on components.
  145.  
  146. For corporate deployment on computers running Windows NT 4.0, 
  147. make sure you have the following free registry space:
  148.  
  149.   - If you are upgrading from Internet Explorer 2.0 or 
  150.     Internet Explorer 3.x: at least 4 MB
  151.   - If you are upgrading from Internet Explorer 4.x:
  152.     at least 2.5 MB 
  153.  
  154. If you're running Internet Explorer 5.01 on Windows NT 4.0, 
  155. you must set user permissions to Full Control for the Temporary 
  156. Internet Files folder (cache). The user must have write 
  157. permission so that files can be stored in the Temporary 
  158. Internet Files folder.
  159.  
  160. If you must reinstall Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3 (SP3) 
  161. after you install Internet Explorer 5.01, you must specify 
  162. when prompted that you do not want it to overwrite any files 
  163. that are newer. After SP3 is reinstalled, carry out the 
  164. following steps to update the registry:
  165.  
  166. 1. Click the Start button, and then click Run.
  167. 2. Type the following: regsvr32 rsabase.dll
  168. 3. Click OK.
  169.  
  170. Installing Windows NT 4.0 Service Packs 
  171. Over Internet Explorer 5.01
  172. ---------------------------------------
  173. If you reinstall a Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack after Internet 
  174. Explorer 5.01 is installed on your computer, some components 
  175. will need to be re-registered. To do this, carry out the 
  176. following steps:
  177.  
  178. 1. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  179. 2. Click the Install/Uninstall tab.
  180. 3. Click Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 and Internet Tools, 
  181.    and then click the Add/Remove button.
  182. 4. Click Repair Internet Explorer, and then click OK.
  183. 5. After the repair operation is complete, restart your computer.
  184.  
  185. Installing Over Windows 2000 Releases
  186. -------------------------------------
  187. This is not a supported configuration. Setup will appear to run, 
  188. but it will update the name of the browser without updating the 
  189. components. You cannot do a full installation of Microsoft 
  190. Internet Explorer 5.01 components over Windows 2000 releases. 
  191.  
  192. Running Internet Explorer 5.01 on a Dual-Boot Operating System
  193. --------------------------------------------------------------
  194. If you are running Internet Explorer 5.01 on a computer that is
  195. set up to dual boot between two operating systems on the same 
  196. partition (for example, Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0), and you 
  197. have configured the computer to share a single Program Files 
  198. folder, you may have problems with add-on components. Also, when 
  199. you uninstall an add-on component from either copy of Internet 
  200. Explorer 5.01, it will be removed from both of them without 
  201. updating the other operating system's installed components 
  202. information. These problems are because the add-on files are 
  203. all stored in the shared Program Files folder, but information 
  204. about installed add-on components is stored elsewhere.
  205.  
  206. Installing or Upgrading the Windows Desktop Update
  207. --------------------------------------------------
  208. To install or upgrade the Windows Desktop Update, you must 
  209. install Internet Explorer 4.01 SP2 before you install 
  210. Internet Explorer 5.01. 
  211.  
  212. If you have already installed Internet Explorer 5.01 and would 
  213. like to install the Windows Desktop Update, carry out the 
  214. following steps:
  215.  
  216. 1. Uninstall Internet Explorer 5.01.
  217. 2. If Internet Explorer 4.01 SP2 is not already installed on 
  218.    your computer, install it.
  219. 3. Install the Windows Desktop Update.
  220. 4. Reinstall Internet Explorer 5.01.
  221.  
  222. Installing Over Localized Windows 98 Arabic and Hebrew Releases
  223. ---------------------------------------------------------------
  224. Windows 98 Arabic and Hebrew require the corresponding localized 
  225. version of Internet Explorer 5.01. It is not possible to install 
  226. the English version of Internet Explorer over the localized 
  227. version of Windows 98. This restriction does not apply to 
  228. localized versions of Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0. You cannot 
  229. install localized Arabic/Hebrew Internet Explorer 5.01 on top of 
  230. localized Windows 95 (only English is supported). 
  231.  
  232. Installing Outlook Express 5 on Windows Terminal Server
  233. -------------------------------------------------------
  234. Before installing Outlook Express 5 on Windows Terminal 
  235. Server, the administrator needs to set a compatibility flag 
  236. in the registry for the Outlook Express 5 setup program to 
  237. work correctly. To do this, carry out the following steps:
  238.  
  239. 1. Create this registry key:
  240.  
  241.    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\
  242.    Terminal Server\Compatibility\Applications\setup50
  243.  
  244. 2. Set the following value under the new setup50 key (this value 
  245.    should be of type REG_DWORD): 
  246.  
  247.    Flags = 0x108
  248.  
  249. Installing Internet Explorer 5.01 
  250. with Norton Protected Recycle Bin Enabled
  251. -----------------------------------------
  252. It is recommended that you disable the Norton Protected 
  253. Recycle Bin while you install Internet Explorer 5.01, and 
  254. that you empty the Norton Protected Recycle Bin before you 
  255. run Setup. Before you empty the Norton Protected Recycle 
  256. Bin, be sure you review its contents in case it contains 
  257. any items you want to recover safely. You can re-enable 
  258. this feature after Internet Explorer 5 Setup is complete.
  259.  
  260. This is recommended because Norton Protected Recycle Bin 
  261. will intercept the removal of temporary files that Setup 
  262. is trying to delete, and you could run out of free space 
  263. on your hard disk if your remaining free space is limited. 
  264. This would cause Internet Explorer Setup to appear locked. 
  265. For instructions on disabling and re-enabling the Norton 
  266. Protected Recycle Bin, see the Norton Utilities documentation.
  267.  
  268. Installing on Windows 98 with Novell IPX/IP client
  269. --------------------------------------------------
  270. If you are using Novell IPX/IP client with Windows 98, you may 
  271. experience problems if you install Internet Explorer 5.01 from 
  272. the Internet. If Setup appears to become unresponsive, restart 
  273. your computer. Setup will continue and finish normally. To work 
  274. around this problem, try one of the following options:
  275.  
  276. - From the Internet, select the Download Only option, 
  277.   and then run and install Internet Explorer 5.01 normally.
  278.  
  279. - Install Internet Explorer 5.01 from a CD-ROM.
  280.  
  281. Uninstalling Internet Explorer 5.01 and Internet Tools
  282. ------------------------------------------------------
  283. You can uninstall Internet Explorer 5.01 and Internet Tools by 
  284. carrying out the following steps:
  285.  
  286. 1. In Control Panel, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  287. 2. Click Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 and Internet Tools, 
  288.    and then click Add/Remove.
  289. 3. Select "Restore the previous Windows configuration," then 
  290.    click OK.
  291. 4. Follow the instructions on your screen.
  292.  
  293. Uninstall for Internet Explorer 4.x Unavailable
  294. -----------------------------------------------
  295. Uninstall for Internet Explorer 4.x is unavailable when Internet 
  296. Explorer 5.01 is installed. The backup files for uninstalling 
  297. Version 4.x are replaced by the backup files for version 5. 
  298. You cannot uninstall version 4.X after uninstalling version 5.
  299.  
  300.  
  301. ADDITIONAL ISSUES
  302. =================
  303.  
  304. Work Offline Dialog Box Appears 
  305. If There Is No Internet Connection
  306. ----------------------------------
  307. If you do not have an active connection to the Internet and 
  308. the Never Dial A Connection option is selected, when you start 
  309. Internet Explorer you may see the following error message: 
  310. "Web page not available when offline." You will be prompted to 
  311. try again or work offline.
  312.  
  313. To be prompted to dial a connection:
  314.  
  315. 1. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
  316. 2. Click the Connections tab.
  317. 3. Click one of the following options:
  318.    Dial Whenever A Network Connection Is Not Present
  319.    - or -
  320.    Always Dial My Default Connection
  321. 4. Click OK or Apply.
  322.  
  323. FTP User Interface and Functionality
  324. ------------------------------------
  325. Internet Explorer 5.01 has an improved FTP user interface 
  326. when direct access to an FTP server is available. If you 
  327. discover an issue in the FTP user interface that blocks FTP 
  328. functionality, you can disable this feature on the Advanced 
  329. tab in the Internet Options dialog box.
  330.  
  331. The following functionality is not supported:
  332.  
  333. - Internet connection via CERN proxy or Web proxies.
  334. - Connecting to VAX or VMS FTP servers.
  335. - Using the browser from within a separate application or 
  336.   service.
  337. - Copying from server to server.
  338. - Drag and drop or copy/paste functionality from an FTP 
  339.   server is supported only on Windows 2000 and later.
  340.  
  341. Font Display Issues
  342. -------------------
  343. If you run a non-Far East language version of Windows NT 4.0 
  344. and you have installed many large fonts, the system's ability 
  345. to use those fonts may be exceeded. If Far East language Web 
  346. pages are not displayed correctly, install Windows NT 4.0 Service 
  347. Pack 5.
  348.  
  349. Non-English Characters in URLs and Queries
  350. ------------------------------------------
  351. Internet Explorer 5.01 uses a new standard to transmit non-
  352. English addresses (URLs) to the server. URLs are now encoded 
  353. in a character encoding standard named UTF-8. If the server is 
  354. running Microsoft Internet Information Server 4 or later, the 
  355. URLs will work as expected. Many servers cannot process URLs 
  356. encoded in UTF-8. To use non-English characters in URLs with 
  357. these servers, carry out the following steps:
  358.  
  359. 1. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
  360. 2. Click the Advanced tab.
  361. 3. Clear the Always Send URLs As UTF-8 check box.
  362.  
  363. The query part of URLs is transmitted in a form fully compatible 
  364. with Internet Explorer 4.
  365.  
  366. Internet Explorer 4.x Compatibility Mode
  367. ----------------------------------------
  368. The Internet Explorer 4.x compatibility option is useful to 
  369. Web developers who want to view and test their Web sites on 
  370. different versions of Internet Explorer using the same computer. 
  371. You may not be able to change all settings for the browser while 
  372. in this mode. When using the compatibility option, you should 
  373. change Internet Options through Control Panel, not through the 
  374. browser's Internet Options on the Tools menu.
  375.  
  376. Uninstalling Outlook Express 5 
  377. ------------------------------ 
  378. If you uninstall Outlook Express 5 and you were previously 
  379. running Internet Mail and News, you would be able to see only 
  380. the messages you received using Internet Mail and News. To 
  381. view Outlook Express 5 messages, reinstall Outlook Express 5. 
  382.  
  383. If you uninstall Outlook Express 5 and you were previously 
  384. running Outlook Express 4, you can view your Outlook Express 5 
  385. messages by using the Import feature. To import your Outlook 
  386. Express messages to Outlook Express 4, carry out the following 
  387. steps:
  388.  
  389. 1. On the File menu, click Import, and then click Messages.
  390. 2. On the list of programs, click Microsoft Outlook Express 5.
  391. 3. Follow the instructions on your screen.
  392.  
  393. Windows Radio Toolbar
  394. ---------------------
  395. Internet Explorer 5.01 includes a Windows Radio toolbar that 
  396. allows streaming radio playback. By default, the toolbar is 
  397. not displayed when the browser is started. To display the 
  398. toolbar whenever the browser is started, carry out the 
  399. following steps:
  400.  
  401. 1. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
  402. 2. Click the Advanced tab.
  403. 3. In the Multimedia area, click the Always Show 
  404.    Internet Explorer Radio Bar check box.
  405.  
  406. Changing the Language of Menus and Dialog Boxes
  407. -----------------------------------------------
  408. Changing the language used in menus and dialog boxes may not 
  409. work with all display adapters. If you see blank menus or 
  410. dialog boxes after changing the language, try either of the 
  411. following options:
  412.  
  413. - Change the resolution of your display adapter.
  414. - Upgrade the driver for your display adapter to a newer 
  415.   version. For information about updated drivers, contact 
  416.   the manufacturer of your display adapter.
  417.  
  418. AutoComplete Options
  419. --------------------
  420. If you do not want AutoComplete to suggest matches for 
  421. certain sensitive previously entered items, you have several 
  422. options:
  423.  
  424. - You can delete a specific AutoComplete entry by highlighting 
  425.   it in the AutoComplete drop-down list and then pressing DELETE.
  426. - If you want to delete a user name/password combination on a 
  427.   login page, delete the user name; the password will be deleted 
  428.   with it.
  429. - If you want to clear all form or password information, carry 
  430.   out the following steps:
  431.  
  432.   1. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options, and then click 
  433.      the Content tab. 
  434.   2. Click AutoComplete, and then click Clear Forms or 
  435.      Clear Passwords.
  436.  
  437. Microsoft Chat 2.5
  438. ------------------
  439. You can no longer install Microsoft Chat 2.5 from the Internet 
  440. Explorer 5.01 installation. If you previously installed Microsoft 
  441. Chat 2.5 and then you upgrade to Internet Explorer 5.01, you will 
  442. be able to continue to use your existing Microsoft Chat 2.5 
  443. client for a limited time on the Microsoft Chat servers. If you 
  444. do not have a Chat client already installed and you would like 
  445. to install one, or if you already have a version of Microsoft 
  446. Chat installed, consider installing the new MSN Chat from 
  447. http://webchat.msn.com. 
  448.  
  449. Microsoft Wallet
  450. ----------------
  451. Microsoft Wallet is no longer available for installation in 
  452. Internet Explorer 5.01. If you have previously installed 
  453. Microsoft Wallet and then you upgrade to Internet Explorer 5, 
  454. you can continue to manage your wallet information from Web 
  455. sites that invoke Wallet's interface, such as http://www.microsoft.com/wallet/downloads/manage.asp)
  456.  
  457. Enhanced Encryption Strength
  458. ----------------------------
  459. Internet Explorer 5.01 now ships with standard encryption 
  460. strength of 56-bit and supports the U.S. government standard 
  461. for data encryption (DES). Moreover, the cryptographic modules 
  462. in Internet Explorer 5.01 have been certified to be compliant 
  463. with the Federal Information Standard (FIPS) 140-1. FIPS 140-1 
  464. is a U.S. government standard that specifies best practices 
  465. for implementing cryptographic software.
  466.  
  467.  
  468. APPLICATION COMPATIBILITY
  469. =========================
  470.  
  471. Visual Studio 6.0
  472. -----------------
  473. There are some known issues when you have Microsoft Visual 
  474. Studio(R) 6.0 and Internet Explorer 5.01 installed on the 
  475. same computer. These issues are resolved with Microsoft Visual 
  476. Studio 6.0 SP3. If you are running Visual Studio 6.0, it is 
  477. recommended that you upgrade to SP3 at 
  478. http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/sp/vs6sp3/.
  479.  
  480. DirecPC 2.0
  481. -----------
  482. After you install Internet Explorer 5.01 on a computer running 
  483. DirecPC 2.0, you may receive an error message when starting 
  484. the DirecPC software. To correct this problem, contact Hughes 
  485. Network Systems to obtain an updated version of the DirecPC 
  486. software.
  487.  
  488. BackOffice Small Business Server
  489. --------------------------------
  490. If you use BackOffice Small Business Server, you must upgrade 
  491. to Small Business Server 4.5 before installing Internet 
  492. Explorer 5.01. Without the upgrade, the SBS management console 
  493. will flicker with each screen transition. Increasing the 
  494. number of colors helps the problem but does not resolve it.
  495.  
  496. Logitech Internet Keyboard
  497. --------------------------
  498. Certain versions of the Key Commander software that ship 
  499. with the Logitech Internet Keyboard are not compatible with 
  500. Internet Explorer 5.01. For more information, contact Logitech 
  501. Customer Support or see the Logitech Web site at
  502. http://www.logitech.com.
  503.  
  504. Diamond Video Drivers
  505. ---------------------
  506. If you are running Internet Explorer 5.01, then you install 
  507. some Diamond video drivers (downloaded from the Diamond Web 
  508. site or from CDs that come with Diamond video cards), you may 
  509. not be able to restart your computer.
  510.  
  511. This is because the Diamond video driver installation replaces 
  512. the Windows system file Comctl32.dll. Diamond is aware of this 
  513. problem and is fixing their video driver installers. There are 
  514. two options for addressing this issue:
  515.  
  516. Before you install these drivers:
  517.   
  518. 1. Make a backup copy of the file Comctl32.dll found in the 
  519.    Windows\System or \Winnt\System32 folder (the system folder).
  520. 2. Install the Diamond video drivers.
  521. 3. Restart your computer by using a bootable floppy disk.
  522. 4. After the restart is complete, copy the backup version of
  523.    Comctl32.dll to the system folder, overwriting the existing 
  524.    version of the file.
  525. 5. Remove the disk from the floppy disk drive, and then restart 
  526.    your computer again. 
  527.  
  528. If you have already installed these drivers:
  529.  
  530. 1. Restart your computer by using a bootable floppy disk.
  531. 2. At the MS-DOS prompt, change directories to the folder 
  532.    containing the Internet Explorer 5.01 files. If these files 
  533.    were downloaded, the default location is C:\Windows Update 
  534.    Setup Files; or, on the CD-ROM, choose the IE5 folder under 
  535.    the correct operating system.
  536. 3. Extract the Comctl32.dll file by using the following command 
  537.    line: 
  538.  
  539.    For Window 95 or Windows 98:
  540.    extract /e /l c:\temp setupw95.cab comctl32.dll
  541.      
  542.    For Windows NT:
  543.    extract /e /l c:\temp setupnt.cab comctl32.dll
  544.  
  545. 4. Copy the extracted Comctl32.dll file from the C:\Temp folder 
  546.    into the Windows\System or \Winnt\System32 folder (the system 
  547.    folder), overwriting the existing version of the file.
  548. 5. Remove the disk from the floppy disk drive, and then restart 
  549.    your computer again. 
  550.  
  551. Internet Explorer ActiveX Tree and Pop-up Menu Controls
  552. -------------------------------------------------------
  553. During the installation of Internet Explorer 5.01, the Setup 
  554. program removes earlier versions of the ActiveX tree control 
  555. and pop-up menu controls due to compatibility issues with this 
  556. version of the browser. Programs that rely on these controls may 
  557. require reinstallation of the controls to restore functionality.
  558.  
  559. Task Scheduler on Windows NT 4.0
  560. --------------------------------
  561. Windows NT 4.0 included an old version of the Schedule service, 
  562. also known as At service (Atsvc.exe). Internet Explorer 5.01 
  563. upgrades it to the new version of the Schedule service, Task 
  564. Scheduler (MSTask.exe) and converts At jobs to Scheduled Tasks.

  566. With the old At service, all At jobs had to run in the same 
  567. account as the service itself. The default account for the 
  568. service was the Local System account, but it could be changed 
  569. to another user account if desired. Some Windows NT 4.0 users 
  570. changed the At service's account because they needed their 
  571. jobs to run in a user account. 
  572.  
  573. With the Task Scheduler, each scheduled task can be configured 
  574. to run in a different account. The Task Scheduler service itself 
  575. has to run in the Local System account.
  576.  
  577. For backward compatibility, the Task Scheduler allows the user 
  578. to set one account to use when running scheduled tasks that were 
  579. created from At jobs. When Internet Explorer 5.01 is installed, 
  580. this account is set to the Local System account. If you are 
  581. running Windows NT 4.0 and you changed the account that the At 
  582. service ran in to something other than the Local System account, 
  583. then after installing Internet Explorer 5.0 you would need to 
  584. manually re-enter the user name and password for that account. 
  585. To do this, in the Scheduled Tasks folder, click the Advanced 
  586. menu, and then click AT Service Account.

  588. This must be done manually because Internet Explorer 5 Setup 
  589. cannot decrypt the password that was used by the At service.
