Apple's QuickTime Plug-in 1.0 for the Internet README for Windows Users ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ATTENTION: Current and New Navigator Users The latest versions of the QuickTime plug-ins are available on the QuickTime Software page. If you already have Netscape Navigator 3.0 or later, you do not need to download Navigator again! Just visit our site to retrieve the latest QuickTime plug-in software. <http://quicktime.apple.com> You need Netscape Navigator 3.0 or later to take advantage of the QuickTime plug-in. Please make sure you download one of the 3.0 or later versions! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Apple's QuickTime Plug-in lets you view QuickTime movies and QuickTime VR Panoramas and Objects directly in your Navigator 3.0 window. This read-me describes what you will need and how to use the Macintosh or Windows version of Apple's QuickTime Plug-in for Netscape Navigator 3.0 or later. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- What you need to use the QuickTime Plug-in Recommended configuration for PC users: * A 386, 486, or 586/Pentium PC running Windows 95, NT or 3.1 * 8mb RAM * Netscape Navigator 3.0b7 or later for your version of Windows * QuickTime 2.1.1 for Windows * The latest version of the Apple QuickTime Plug-in for Navigator (Windows) * Version 1.0.3 or later of the QuickTime VR (Virtual Reality) for Windows software (QTVRW.QTC or QTVRW32.QTC). You can download all of the software listed above (except Netscape Navigator itself) from the QuickTime Software page. Follow the instructions on the page to install the software. The PC files are in ZIP format and you will need a utility such as pkunzip to extract the software. You can also obtain the QuickTime plug-in by downloading Netscape Navigator 3.0 or later. For the latest version of the plug-in, visit the QuickTime Software page. Please note that QuickTime itself and the QuickTime VR software is *not* included with Netscape Navigator 3.0, but you can download them from the QuickTime Software page. <http://quicktime.apple.com> The QuickTime VR Software (QTVRW.QTC for Windows 3.1 or QTVRW32.QTC for Windows 95/NT) file must be in the WINDOWS directory of your primary drive. If you have never seen QuickTime VR before, be sure to stop by Apple's QuickTime VR web page to learn more about this cool software. <http://qtvr.quicktime.apple.com> Very important note: All of the Windows software comes in two flavors: 16-bit (for Windows 3.1 users) and 32-bit (for Windows '95 and NT users). In order for the plug-in to work, it must be the same "flavor" as your version of Navigator. When you download any of the software listed above, make sure you download the correct version: the 32-bit version if you are using Navigator for Windows '95 or NT, or the 16-bit version if you are using Navigator for Windows 3.1. Also, if you are using the 16 bit version of Navigator 3.0, you must have SHARE.EXE loaded. Check your AUTOEXEC.BAT startup file for the statement "C:/DOS/SHARE.EXE" and add it if it is not there. You may run the 16-bit version of Navigator 3.0 or any of the above files in Windows95/NT, however, we recommend that you utilize the native 32-bit versions to ensure compatibility and enhanced performance. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- What the QuickTime Plug-in does Apple's QuickTime Plug-in for Netscape Navigator 3.0 lets you experience QuickTime content directly in the browser window. You no longer need a "helper application" like MoviePlayer to view QuickTime content over the internet. You can also view QuickTime VR (Virtual Reality) Panoramas and Objects right in your browser, after downloading the QuickTime VR software from Apple. The QuickTime Plug-in works with existing QuickTime movies, and with movies prepared to take advantage of the plug-in's "fast-start" feature. The fast-start feature will present the first frame of the movie almost immediately and can begin playing even before the movie has been completely downloaded. Netscape Navigator 3.0 or later uses the QuickTime Plug-in automatically to play any QuickTime movie while browsing the Internet. The plug-in can play many kinds of QuickTime movies (.mov files) including movies with text, MIDI, and other kinds of data. If you have downloaded and installed the QuickTime VR component, it will also let you interact with QuickTime VR Panoramas and Objects. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here are some Frequently Asked Questions Q I am running Windows '95 (or NT). I downloaded the QuickTime VR software (QTVRW.QTC or QTVRW32.QTC), installed it in my WINDOWS directory, and rebooted. But When I run Navigator with the QuickTime VR component, I can't view QuickTime VR Panoramas and Objects. A You need the latest version (1.0.3) of the QTVR software. Additionally, you must make sure you match the "flavor" (16-bit or 32-bit) of the QTVR software with the "flavor" of QuickTime and Navigator. See the note at the top of this document for more information about this. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q I downloaded Netscape Navigator 3.0, but the QuickTime Plug-in doesn't seem to be working. A Navigator 3.0 lets you pick plug-ins for different types of content, just like you pick helper apps. You may need to pick the QuickTime plug-in in the Navigator "Options/Helpers" dialog to make the QuickTime plug-in work. You should also make sure the plug-in is in the Plugins folder and that you have re-launched Navigator since downloading the plug-in. If Navigator will not let you choose the plug-in in its Preferences dialog, you may need to remove the Netscape preferences folder from your System folder and re-launch Navigator. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q I am using a Web browser other than Netscape Navigator 3.0 and I am experiencing problems with the QuickTime plug-in. A In this release the QuickTime plug-in only supports Netscape Navigator 3.0 or later. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q How do I save a QuickTime movie from a Web page to my hard-drive? A Just click and hold the mouse (right-hand button for Windows) down over the movie. A popup will appear that lets you save the movie. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q I design web pages and would like to know more about movie controls and other capabilities of the QuickTime plug-in. Where should I look for documentation? A Please check the QuickTime (Webmaster's Page) on the QuickTime site to learn about all of the capabilities of the Quicktime Plug-in. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q On a Windows machine, when I click on a QuickTime VR Object or Panorama, I get a blank window. How do I get VR to work with the QuickTime plug-in on Windows? A You may not have the most recent version (1.03) of the QTVRW.QTC or QTVRW32.QTC file in your WINDOWS or WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. QTVRW.QTC contains software used by the Quicktime plug-in to play QuickTime VR Objects and Panoramas, and must be in your WINDOWS or WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. Visit http://quicktime.apple.com to download the QTVRW.QTC. If you have QTVRW.QTC installed properly and still get a blank window, you may not have enough free memory. Try quitting open applications or adjusting your virtual memory settings in the System Control Panel. Finally, you must make sure you match the "flavor" (16-bit or 32-bit) of the QTVR software with the "flavor" of QuickTime and Navigator. See the note at the top of this document for more information about this. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q I found a page with background audio and a VR Panorama. As I was playing with the VR movie, the audio stopped playing. Why? A When you are interacting with the VR movie and moving the mouse, the audio movie will stop temporarily. Releasing the mouse button should allow the audio to resume. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q I am browsing a page with a QuickTime VR panorama and expect that I can use the option and control (shift and control on Windows) to zoom in/zoom out of the movie. Likewise, with a regular QuickTime movie, I expect the arrow keys to step through the movie a frame at a time. But the movies don't seem to respond to keystrokes. A You need to select the QuickTime VR panaroma or QuickTime movie first by clicking on it.
