  6. The MultiSpec folder contains:
  7.  
  8. (a) This transmittal information. 
  9.     
  10. (b) a copy of the latest 'native' version of MultiSpec.
  11.         
  12. (c) a text document entitled 'MultiSpec - A Multispectral Image Data 
  13.      Analysis System' which provides a brief summary of MultiSpec 
  14.      functional capabilities. 
  15.     
  16. (d) a small Thematic Mapper data set labeled TIPJUL1.LAN.
  17.     
  18. (e) a sample GIS file in the form of a ground truth map of the TM data 
  19.      area, labeled JTIPSUB1.GIS, and one with the suffix .TRL, which 
  20.      contains information used by the program such as color palette 
  21.      information.

  23. A document entitled 'An Introduction to MultiSpec' is the primary documentation 
  24. for the program. This document can be downloaded separately from the web in 
  25. Acrobat PDF format. It contains (a) a brief background 
  26. statement, (b) a simple tutorial which uses the sample TM data files provide
  27. with MultiSpec, (c) a section entitled "Using MultiSpec", describing how to 
  28. import data into the system and further illustrations of how a larger set of 
  29. MultiSpec capabilities might be used, (d) a Reference section providing details 
  30. on each item in each program menu, and (e) three appendices.

  32. It is recommended that new users follow through on a Macintosh the steps 
  33. described in the Tutorial Example and Using MultiSpec sections. After doing 
  34. this, the Reference section should be read, as there are a number of features 
  35. and capabilities in the program which may not be apparent at first glance.

  37. The program should run satisfactorily on any variety of PowerPC Macintoshes 
  38. and 680x0-based Macintoshes which have a math coprocessor, and it should run 
  39. with at least 750K of memory assigned to it, but it will run more conveniently 
  40. with more. The enclosed disk is set for 2 Mb. You may change this as needed on 
  41. the Memory Size box using the Get Info selection on the Finder File Menu. 
  42. MultiSpec requires at least Macintosh Operating system 6.0.4 or later.

  44. Our goal with regard to the program is to have a general capability to manipulate
  45. multispectral and hyperspectral data available for use in our own research 
  46. effort and to illustrate the results of our research efforts. In order to 
  47. limit the magnitude of our software effort, it has been our policy to rely 
  48. upon commercially available software, such as word processors, spreadsheets, 
  49. and graphing programs, wherever possible, rather than to write software for 
  50. such functions directly in the system. As a result, the program is written in 
  51. such a way as to make it convenient to copy and paste or otherwise export 
  52. images, tabular data, and text into such commercial application programs.

  54. We have no plans to make a commercial product of MultiSpec at this time. Rather, 
  55. we expect to share it freely with colleagues in the research and educational 
  56. community as they may desire, on an "as is" basis. Basically our intent is to 
  57. have a program directed primarily at multispectral and hyperspectral data which 
  58. is easy to learn and use, even for the first time or occasional user, and which 
  59. is implemented on an adequately powerful processor inexpensive enough for 
  60. individuals to afford. It was these latter factors which led us to the Macintosh.

  62. The program has been only moderately well tested and debugged, and so we ask that 
  63. you limit your expectations of it accordingly. We have used it in our research 
  64. and with our students in our graduate remote sensing course, but not in a wide 
  65. variety of other environments. In addition, there are approximately 600 known 
  66. registered users of MultiSpec around the world. Please let us know if you have 
  67. trouble with it. We would also appreciate having your comments and criticisms of 
  68. it after you have had an opportunity to use it, as this will be valuable in 
  69. improving it further. Please note that the program and its documentation is 
  70. copyrighted. We ask that you not supply copies of the program to others, but 
  71. rather, refer them to us so that an accurate list of registered recipients of 
  72. MultiSpec can be maintained.
