- EmGee Software Installer/Uninstaller Readme File -
The installer and uninstaller that came with this software
are part of another package that will soon be available from
EmGee Software. The information in this file applies to
version 1.1 of both the installer and uninstaller.
INSTALLER (Setup.exe)
---------------------
Files used by the installer -
SETUP.EXE
The installer. Uses a simple script to quickly and
reliably get the program installed on your system. This
file MUST be present in the directory where the source
files are or the installation will abort.
SETUP.INI
Setup uses this file to install the files to your
system. Please do not edit this file; doing so may cause
unpredictable results. This file MUST be present in the
directory where the source files are, or the installation
will abort.
QPRO200.DLL
Setup uses this file for low level functions used during
the install. This file must be present in the source
directory or \windows\system.
MSAFINX.DLL
Setup uses this file for various date comparison routines.
This file must be present in the source directory or
\windows\system.
Control over the installation -
Depending on the settings in SETUP.INI, you will
be prompted for certain things during the installation
process. Typically, you will be prompted for permission
to create a program group and icons and possibly about
your startup group.
All important information about the installation is logged
to SETUP.LOG. Files actually installed on your system,
any directories that were created, the program group
name, and any startup group items are logged.
If any file in \windows\system needs to be replaced you will
be prompted. Any files in the application directory will be
overwritten by default (in the case of upgrading from a
previous version). This version of EmGee Software
Installer/Uninstaller does not put any files in the
\windows directory.
Overwrite responses -
Yes - Overwrites the target file with the newer file.
Yes To All - Overwrites any files that are older.
No - The target file is not overwritten.
No To All - Do not overwrite any files.
Backup - Backup the file, then install the newer one.
Backup All - Backup all files that need to be replaced.
Reinstalling -
If you need to reinstall the application, first run the
uninstaller to remove the files from your system. This
allows the installer to relog all the installation files
correctly. If you do not uninstall before reinstalling,
SETUP.LOG may not show all of the files used by the
application, which would make the uninstaller nearly
worthless.
Trouble with the installer -
If you have any trouble using the uninstaller you can
manually install the application. The files that came with
application should NOT be individually compressed, although
you may have received them in an archive, such as a
zip file. To manually install the application follow these
general rules:
Copy any .VBX, .DLL, and .OCX files to \windows\system. Take
care to not overwrite more recent files. When in doubt,
don't overwrite anything. Copy everything else to the
applicatiion directory of your choice.
As an alternative, if you just want to try out the
application and you are running Windows 95, then you
can also put EVERYTHING in the application directory of
your choice. This works because on a Windows 95 system the
application directory is the first place that is searched for
the external files. While this does work, it is not
recommended, because it defeats the purpose of sharing
resources, and possibly uses more disk space than would be
normally required. This may also work under Windows 3.x, but I
think the search sequence is different (searches
\windows\system before the application directory).
UNINSTALLER (Uninstal.exe)
--------------------------
Files used by the installer -
UNINSTAL.EXE
The uninstaller. Reads a simple script and uninstalls exactly
what you allow it to. This file MUST be present in the same
directory as SETUP.LOG or the uninstallation will abort.
SETUP.LOG
The uninstaller uses this file to remove the program and
it's files from your system. Please do not edit this file;
doing so may cause unpredictable results.
Control over the uninstallation -
You will have full control over the uninstallation process.
You will be prompted to select the files and other items you
would like to have removed. By using standard shift-click and
ctrl-click methods you may tag individual files for removal.
WARNING: Use caution when removing files from windows\system.
Even if they were logged by the installer, that does not
mean that they are not being used by another application
on your system.
NOTE: On some systems using SHARE.EXE or VSHARE.386 the
uninstaller may not be able to remove UNINSTAL.EXE, the
directory the application was installed in, and possibly
other files if they are in use. This is a known limitation
of the EmGee Software Installer/Uninstaller. In this case,
you will have to manually remove those items. Those of you
running Windows 95 will probably not encounter this
problem.
