  3. Computer CD-ROM Changers are a relatively new device category. Both Operating 
  4. Systems & Applications are only now beginning to become "CD-ROM Changer aware".
  5. With this in mind, Panasonic has taken innovative steps to provide both simple 
  6. and advanced operational User Interfaces (UI) for your BIG 5 CD-ROM changer. 
  7. There are several different modes of operating the changer. Please take some 
  8. time to review the most recent information included here. 
  9.  
  10. This file includes the latest information about the software included with your
  11. CD-ROM changer.
  12. Since we are continually improving the usability of the CD-Changer please

  14. to obtain the latest drivers and utilities. You will also find other useful 
  15. information here that will help you get exceptional performance from the BIG 5 
  16. CD-ROM Changer.

  28. Remember that you can access only one CD disc at a time, and some operational 
  29. modes, like the Smart CD Audio Player for Windows 95 will automatically switch 
  30. CD-DA Audio discs for you. Panasonic encourages you to test drive both Single 
  31. Drive letter Mode and 5 Drive letter mode to determine which is best for you 
  32. in Windows 3.1. If you are using Windows 95, the difference between 5 drive 
  33. letter mode and single drive letter mode are greatly diminished.

  36. Description of Operating Modes
  37. Please remember you can access only one CD disc at a time, and some 
  38. applications modes will automatically switch discs, while others may not.  
  39. As more applications become "Changer Aware" using the CD-Changer will be 
  40. completely transparent. Operating systems, Like Windows 95, in the coming 
  41. months begin to tightly integrate the functionality of the changer. The Utility
  42. software for Windows 95 is currently the simplest & most robust UI included 
  43. with the Big 5.
  44.  
  45. Single Drive Letter Mode:
  46. The Big 5 Changer  will be installed on the system as the first available 
  47. drive letter after your Hard Disk Drive (HDD is assumed to be C:\ ). The Big 5 
  48. drive letter would be D:\ in this case. The Panasonic DD1 utility is the 
  49. preffered utility for use when operating your CD-Changer in this mode. The DD1 
  50. utility basically replaces the need for you to reach to change discs. Pressing 
  51. on one of the numbered slot ICONS pulls that CD disc into the changer drive . 
  52. Most multiple disc games work best in this mode. Please refer to the online 
  53. help of DD1 for more specific operational information. You cannot use the DD1 
  54. utility in the 
  55.  
  56. Five Drive Letter Mode
  57.  
  58. The Big 5 Changer will be installed on the system as the first five available 
  59. drive letters after your Hard Disk Drive (HDD) drive letter (Example D:,E:,F:G:
  60. ,H:). The Panasonic DD5 utility is the preffered utility for when operating 
  61. your CD-Changer in this mode. The DD5 utility is a more advanced than the DD1
  62. utility . Pressing on one of the ICONS pulls that disk into the changer drive. 
  63. Pleas see the operationg instructions for more detailed operation instruction 
  64. for DD5.

  67. Manual installation for device driver and utility. ( DOS and Windows 3.1 )
  68. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  69. Preparation: 
  70. Make a directory and extract the device driver and utility programs into that 
  71. directory.
  72. 1. Make a directory named "DD5" on the hard disk. ( Assuming the HDD is C:\ )
  73. 2. Insert setup disk into drive a:\..
  74. 3. If  Windows3.1 is running, EXIT Windows before proceeding .
  75. 4. Change to drive A:\.WIN31\
  76. 5. Type the following..  "LHA E CHGDRV C:\DD5\ ", then press <ENTER>.
  77. 6. Change to drive C:\.
  78. ============================================================ 
  79. Modification of  the " CONFIG.SYS" and " AUTOEXEC.BAT" system files.
  80. 1, Please backup the current system " CONFIG.SYS" and " AUTOEXEC.BAT ", Copy 
  81.    these files.
  82. Copy CONFIG.SYS *.PAN    <ENTER>
  83. Copy AUTOEXEC.BAT *.PAN <ENTER>

  86. Important Troubleshooting Notes: 
  87. Two CD-ROM Drives on the System:
  88. A. It is possible (and sometimes very desirable) to have the BIG 5 CD-ROM 
  89.    Changer and another Single Disk CD-ROM drive installed on the computer 
  90.    system. 
  91. B. Please examine the configuration of the Single Disk CD-ROM drive, and be 
  92.    sure its Device Driver settings do not conflict with the BIG 5 CD-ROM 
  93.    Changer device Driver settings. 
  94. C. On systems with another Single Disk CD-ROM drive installed, it may be 
  95.    necessary to modify the current device driver swithch settings in the 
  96.    CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT for the Single Disk CD-ROM drive and the BIG5 
  97.    to coexist on the system . Please consult the manual of the Single Disk  
  98.    CD-ROM drive installed on the system. 
  99. D. Carefully compare the device driver settings of the Single Disk CD-ROM drive
  100.    and the BIG 5 if you desire to , 
  101. E. If you continue to have trouble getting both the drives working on the 
  102.    system at the same time please call our technical support line . Have copies
  103.    of your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT printed or handy and Panasonic Technical
  104.    support will guide you through the process.

  106. 2, Add the following lines in the CONFIG.SYS as follows.
  107. LASTDRIVE=Z
  108. DEVICE=C:\DD5\ATAPICD2.SYS /D:PANIDE01 /N:5 /Q:15 /P:1 /M:1
  109. This is an example for the default installation of ATAPICD2.SYS. It is possible
  110. to change the value of several device driver switches. Refer to the section  
  111. below "DOS Device Drive Option switch options" and modify  the CONFIG.SYS as 
  112. desired to match your system operational requirements.
  113. .
  114. 3,  Add the following lines in the AUTOEXC.BAT as follows.
  115. ( IF  "WIN" appears in order to start Windows3.1 automatically, insert the 
  116. following lines immediately before "WIN"in the AUTOEXEC.BAT.)
  117. C:\DD5\MSCDEX/D:PANIDE01
  118. SET PATH=C:\DD5/;%PATH%
  119. 4, Remove the SETUP disk and restart the computer, then the computer setups 
  120. CD-ROM DRIVE.
  121.  
  122. After successful installation of  the DOS device driver, add the utilities for 
  123. Windows 3.1 manually.
  124. 1)  Create a Program Group in Windows 3.1 called "Panasonic Disc Director
  125. 2)  Add the Icons for the three Utility Programs which are included with the 
  126.     Windows 3.1 Software.
  127.     DD1.EXE, DD5.EXE and SOS.EXE
  128. Note: If you are not sure how to add Program Groups or Program Icons, please 
  129.       consult the Windows 3.1 Operating Manual or Windows Help File.

  131. DOS Device Drive Option switch options.
  132. We have provided this section for reference of the advanced computer users . 
  133. Running the SOS Utility Program in Windows 3.1 can modify these settings for 
  134. the novice computer user.

  136. ATAPICD.SYS /D:PANIDE01 /N:X /Q:XX /P:X /M:X

  139. Setting the numbers of CD-ROM drives.
  140. N:5    CD-ROM drives are defined as 5 Drives (Example D:,E:,F:G:,H:)
  141. N:1       CD-ROM drive is defined as 1 drive.(Example D)
  142. Note:
  143. In case of "N:1", only loading tray is available using the DD1.EXE slot 
  144. selector in Windows 3.1
  145. In case of "N:5", Drive access available using the command line interface in 
  146. DOS, or in Windows 3.1 using DD5.EXE Disc Director. Clicking on the drive 
  147. letter in Windows File Manager will also load the corresponding disc into the 
  148. CD-Changer.
  149.  
  150. Don't set "N:2, N:3, N:4". Because operating is unstable.
  151.

  153. Setting for IRQ number.
  154. Set IRQ number to match the hardware jumper configuration of the included 
  155. interface board.
  156. IRQ:15     IDE secondary interface. (Default Setting from Factory)
  157. IRQ:14  IDE primary interface. (Optional Setting when connecting BIG 5 to the 
  158. system HDD controller)
  159. (Also IRQ:10,11,12 are selectable, but be careful, it may conflict with other 
  160. devices on the system . )

  163. Select the Primary or Secondary for IDE interface.
  164. Set this to match the hardware connection of your system.
  165. P:0    Connect with Primary.
  166. P:1    Connect with Secondary.
  167.  
  168. M:X
  169. Select Master or Slave.
  170. Set this to match the hardware setting of your BIG 5 CD-ROM Changer
  171. M:1      Master (Default Setting from Factory)
  172. M:2     Slave
