  5. Read this file before installing the 3Com EtherLink III LAN+Modem PC Card.
  6. This file contains information that became available after the 3Com
  7. EtherLink III LAN+Modem PC Card User Guide was published.

  31. Firmware Upgrades
  32. ===================
  33.  
  34. You can download firmware upgrade files from one of 3Com's on-line
  35. libraries. For information on 3COm's on-line support services, refer
  36. to Appendix E of the User Guide or see the SUPPORT.TXT file on the
  37. EtherDisk diskette.
  38.  
  39. When downloading firmware upgrade files for the LAN+Modem card, be
  40. sure you get the correct version for your card:
  41.  
  42. 562BFIRM.EXE is the self-extracting archive for upgrading the
  43.              3C562B/3C563B LAN+28.8 Modem PC Card firmware.
  44.  
  45. 562CFIRM.EXE is the self-extracting archive for upgrading the
  46.              3C562C/3C563C LAN+33.6 Modem PC Card firmware.
  47.  
  48. 562DFIRM.EXE is the self-extracting archive for upgrading the
  49.              3C562D/3C563D LAN+33.6 Modem PC Card firmware.
  50.  
  51. NOTE:    Check the model number on the bottom side of your
  52.          card.  If the label says 3C562B/3C563B, use the "B"
  53.      version files. If the label says 3C562C/3C563C, use
  54.      the "C" version files. If the label says 3C562D/3C563D,
  55.      use the "D" version files. 
  56.  
  57. CAUTION: Be sure you use the correct firmware image file
  58.      for your card. Using the wrong firmware image file will
  59.          make your card inoperable.
  60.  
  61. Run the self-extracting archive by typing:
  62.  
  63.     562dfirm [Enter]
  64.  
  65. This creates five files:
  66.  
  67. FLASHROM.EXE This is the program for upgrading your firmware
  68.              under DOS or OS/2
  69. WINFLASH.EXE Use this program for upgrading your firmware under
  70.              Windows 95 or Windows NT
  71. 3COM.FFF     This is the firmware image file for the
  72.              3C562B/3C563B LAN+28.8 Modem PC Card.
  73. LICENSE.TXT  The 3Com license agreement for your card and software.
  74. INSTALL.TXT  Instructions for performing the upgrade procedure.

  77. Perform the upgrade from the hard drive. Before starting the
  78. procedure:
  79.  
  80.  - Disconnect the cables from the LAN+Modem card.
  81.  - Connect to a reliable AC power source (do not use battery
  82.    power only).  
  83.  
  84. CAUTION: Interruptions during the download procedure may corrupt
  85.          the data and damage the card.
  86.  
  87. FIRMWARE UPGRADES UNDER DOS
  88.  
  89. On DOS platforms, the FLASHROM utility works with Card Services
  90. and Intel PC Card (and compatible) controllers. If your laptop
  91. does not have a suitable card controller, be sure Card Services
  92. is loaded. FLASHROM will not run with the network drivers, but
  93. the 3Com Configuration Manager, 3CELCM.EXE, must be loaded to
  94. enable the modem.

  96.  1. Turn on the computer and boot DOS without loading the
  97.     network drivers.
  98.  
  99.  2. Load 3CELCM.EXE to enable the modem. Type:
  100.  
  101.     3celcm [Enter]
  102.  
  103.  3. Verify that the FLASHROM.EXE program can see the card. Type:
  104.  
  105.     flashrom version [Enter]
  106.  
  107.     This should display the current version of the LAN+Modem
  108.     card firmware. If the program cannot find the card, 
  109.     reconfigure the card and try again. 
  110.  
  111.  4. Run the FLASHROM program to upgrade the firmware.
  112.  
  113.     flashrom 3com.fff [Enter]
  114.  
  115.     FLASHROM displays a message when the upgrade is complete.
  116.  
  117. After upgrading the firmware, reboot the PC before using the
  118. LAN+Modem card.

  121. FIRMWARE UPGRADES UNDER WINDOWS 95 AND WINDOWS NT
  122.  
  123. For firmware upgrades under Windows 95 and Windows NT, the
  124. ELPC3X.VXD driver must be loaded to enable the COM port. Unplug
  125. the cables so the card is not connected during the upgrade. To
  126. upgrade your firmware under Windows 95 and Windows NT:
  127.  
  128.  1. Open a DOS window.
  129.  
  130.  2. Run WINFLASH from the Start menu, Explorer, or File
  131.     Manager.
  132.  
  133.  3. Click on Locate Card.
  134.  
  135.     This finds the card, enables the COM port, and displays
  136.     the current version of the LAN+Modem card firmware. If the
  137.     program cannot find the card, reconfigure the card and try
  138.     again.
  139.  
  140.  4. Click Upgrade to upgrade the firmware on your LAN+Modem
  141.     card.
  142.  
  143.  5. Select the firmware image file 3COM.FFF and click OPEN.
  144.  
  145.     This will start the firmware upgrade.
  146.  
  147. After upgrading the firmware, reboot the PC before using the
  148. LAN+Modem card.
  149.  
  150. FIRMWARE UPGRADES UNDER OS/2
  151.  
  152.  1. Open a DOS window.
  153.  
  154.  2. If the card is in LAN mode, run 3Switch to enable it for
  155.     MODEM operation. Type:
  156.  
  157.     3switch modem [Enter]
  158.  
  159.  3. Verify that the FLASHROM.EXE program can see the card. Type:
  160.  
  161.     flashrom version [Enter]
  162.  
  163.     This should display the current version of the LAN+Modem
  164.     card firmware. If the program cannot find the card, 
  165.     reconfigure the card and try again. 
  166.  
  167.  4. Run the FLASHROM program to upgrade the firmware. Upgrade
  168.     the "D" version LAN+Modem card with the MNPV201D.ROM image file,
  169.     for example, by typing:
  170.  
  171.     flashrom 3com.fff [Enter]
  172.  
  173.     FLASHROM displays a message when the upgrade is complete.
  174.  
  175. After upgrading the firmware, reboot the PC before using the
  176. LAN+Modem card.
