  42. PKZIP for Windows provides a full-featured, graphical 
  43. interface for compressing, extracting, and managing your
  44. compressed data files.  PKZIP for Windows is the latest 
  45. version of the popular data compression program from 
  46. PKWARE, Inc. PKZIP is a powerful utility that provides 
  47. many functions for data compression, file archival, 
  48. management, and distribution. PKZIP has led the way in 
  49. industry standard .ZIP format compression since 1989, 
  50. when PKWARE introduced the .ZIP file format.

  53. INSTALLATION
  54. ------------

  56. PKZIP for Windows is installed using the Microsoft Windows
  57. Installer.  This installation process makes installing 
  58. and configuring PKZIP for Windows easy and avoids common 
  59. conflicts that can arise when installing new software.  
  60.  
  61. If you have purchased a REGISTERED copy of this software, it is 
  62. distributed either on CD-ROM or as an electronic delivery file
  63. available for downloading from the Internet.  If you have a 
  64. SHAREWARE copy of this software, it will be distributed using
  65. a PKSFX(R) self-extracting file.
  66.  
  67. Installing from CD-ROM:
  68.  
  69. If you are installing from CD-ROM, simply insert the CD into
  70. your drive.  The Autorun feature will automatically start the
  71. setup program.  If the Autorun feature is not enabled on your 
  72. system, you can run SETUP.EXE directly from the CD.  After the 
  73. setup program has started, follow the instructions provided 
  74. on-screen to complete the installation.

  76. Installing from a PKSFX file:
  77.  
  78. If you are installing a version of the software downloaded from
  79. the Internet (i.e. either a REGISTERED version purchased
  80. online, or a SHAREWARE copy downloaded from an Internet site such
  81. as www.pkware.com) you will receive a PKSFX self-extracting file.
  82. The Windows Installer is packaged inside the PKSFX file.  
  83. Run the PKSFX file to start the installation.  It will extract 
  84. the files needed to install the software and it will automatically
  85. start the setup program.  Follow the instructions provided by 
  86. the setup program to complete the installation.

  88. When you run the PKSFX file, the files it contains are extracted
  89. to an intermediate folder and the installation continues from
  90. this location.  Once PKZIP for Windows is installed and working
  91. properly on your system, you may delete this intermediate folder
  92. to free up disk space.  If you delete this intermediate folder
  93. but later want to reinstall the product, you will need to re-run
  94. the PKSFX file.

  96. We encourage you to make a backup of your PKSFX file, or of the
  97. contents of the intermediate folder to ensure you will be able
  98. to reinstall this product if you ever need to in the future.

  102. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

  105. PKZIP for Windows is intended for use on Microsoft Windows 95,
  106. Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows NT 4.0, and Windows 2000 systems.
  107. Systems running Windows 95 or NT 4.0 systems require Microsoft 
  108. Internet Explorer 4.0 or greater. PKZIP utilizes several system 
  109. (e.g. security) files installed in conjunction with 
  110. Internet Explorer. Therefore, Internet Explorer (version 4.0
  111. or greater) must reside on your system prior to installing
  112. PKZIP for Windows.

  114. If you plan to use the Digital Signature feature available with
  115. PKZIP for Windows, you must also obtain and install a valid 
  116. Digital Certificate onto your system prior to using this feature.

  126. The files that comprise the REGISTERED version of PKZIP for 
  127. Windows are not for distribution.  Consult the end-user
  128. license agreement that came with your copy of this program
  129. for information on the terms and conditions of use.

  131. SHAREWARE versions of PKZIP for Windows are available for 
  132. distribution.  However, if you plan to distribute the 
  133. SHAREWARE version of PKZIP for Windows to friends, 
  134. associates, or to an online service, you must distribute 
  135. the entire file set as originally received.  Do not 
  136. distribute individual files.

  138. You are free to evaluate the SHAREWARE version of 
  139. PKZIP for Windows for up to 30 days. Continued use of this
  140. software after the evaluation period ends requires payment of
  141. a registration fee.
