  4. (InoculateIT PE) to protect your  computer against viruses,

  32. By registering, you are automatically subscribed to our FREE 
  33. Virus Threat Notification System as well as our Update 
  34. Notification Service. Anytime a new virus is found that is 
  35. actually spreading around the world, this service will send an E-
  36. mail to you when a new virus signature update is available.  This 
  37. handy service will ensure that you are kept up to date so that 
  38. you are protected against the very latest viruses. The Update 
  39. Notification Service will only alert you when a new virus 
  40. signature is posted on the Internet.

  43. Signature Updates
  44.  
  45. Signature updates for InoculateIT Personal Edition are available 
  46. for FREE from Computer Associates Web site. A signature update 
  47. can be done either manually using a Web browser or semi-
  48. automatically using the included auto-download utility. In order 
  49. to obtain signature updates either way you must register with 
  50. Computer Associates. To register go to

  54. You will receive a customer ID. You can enter this customer ID 
  55. into the Options Wizard of the InoculateIT Personal Edition 
  56. application (from the main menu Options | Options Wizard). You 
  57. will need both your customer ID and your email you used for 
  58. registration to perform signature updates using a Web browser or 
  59. the auto-download utility.

  61. A customer ID is not required at installation time, registration 
  62. can be done after the installation.

  65. Year 2000 Support
  66.  
  67. We are pleased to advise you that InoculateIT PE currently 
  68. supports Year 2000 processing.
  69.  
  70. Computer Associates' basic support for the millennium date change 
  71. (Year 2000) provides or will provide for proper operation of our 
  72. products according to the published documentation. In most cases, 
  73. this means simply assuring that dates are evaluated and processed 
  74. properly for sequence and comparison. Testing and Quality 
  75. Assurance processes are carried out to validate the operation of 
  76. these products as related to the millennium date change, and any 
  77. functional errors will be accepted as issues (bugs) and resolved 
  78. according to our standard maintenance and support policies.

  80. As long as your license for each respective CA program remains in 
  81. effect and active on maintenance, you will be entitled to all of 
  82. the benefits of CA's implementation of Year 2000 date support as 
  83. described above. Of course, nothing herein should be deemed to 
  84. modify in any way any of the terms or conditions of any existing 
  85. license between us respecting any CA program.

  88. Eicar - A file to test your configuration
  89.  
  90. This is a program from the European Institute for Computer Anti-
  91. Virus Research that can help test the virus detection 
  92. capabilities of Anti-Virus software.
  93.  
  94. This is a small .COM file for DOS that simply prints the message
  95.  
  96. EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!
  97.  
  98. when executed. It has the useful property that it consists 
  99. entirely of printable ASCII characters, so you can easily email 
  100. or fax it to someone.
  101.  
  102. Many anti-virus products will detect this file as if it had a 
  103. virus. Most will give a special message to make it clear that 
  104. this is a test file and not a real virus. For example, when the 
  105. EICAR file is scanned, the following message will be displayed:
  106.  
  107. Detected the EICAR test string. Not a virus.
  108.  
  109. The main use of the EICAR test file is to test that your Anti-
  110. Virus software is configured and operating as you want it to. For 
  111. example, it could be used to test that Real-Time protection is 
  112. active and behaving as you expect.
  113.  
  114. While this file obviously has absolutely no virus code in it, you 
  115. should only distribute it to people who have a clear 
  116. understanding of what it does. Also, do not store it on 
  117. production machines that run anti-virus software (except as part 
  118. of a deliberate test), as it will probably trigger whatever alarm 
  119. bells are in place.

  128. Out of date warning system has been improved.
  129.  
  130. In the past IPE would bring up an 'out-of-date' warning 180 days 
  131. (6 months) after it was first built. This would help people 
  132. remember that they need to keep their anti-virus software up to 
  133. date if they wish to catch the latest viruses.
  134.  
  135. Now that we have DAT file updates it is more intelligent to warn 
  136. people to update their DAT file if it has been a while since they 
  137. last installed a DAT file update.
  138.  
  139. During installation/updating you will be asked how often you 
  140. would like to be reminded to update for the latest protection. 
  141.  
  142.  
  143. Added Directory Tree View button to the browser window to make it 
  144. easier to browse through directories and select files for 
  145. scanning.

  147. We have continued to evolve the interface to make it easier to 
  148. use. One of the ways we can make it easier to use is to make it 
  149. look like other programs that people are already using. This 
  150. change brings the interface in line with recent changes to the 
  151. main MS tools that are used for browsing directories and files.

  153. Some people don't have a lot of screen space and may prefer not 
  154. to use the tree view option. To enable or disable this option 
  155. open IPE and select View | Directory Tree or select the following 
  156. button from the interface.

  159. IPE can be used on foreign computers. 
  160.  
  161. Having Double Byte Character Set compliance means that IPE 5.x 
  162. can successfully be run on many machines that do not use English 
  163. as their primary language. So IPE 5.x will work on computers that 
  164. use Chinese, Japanese, Korean and other European or Asian 
  165. languages.

  168. Faster floppy boot sector cleaning.
  169.  
  170. The boot sector protection for floppy disks has been changed so 
  171. that it will now automatically replace any boot sector that is 
  172. considered bad with a copy of a standard boot sector.
  173.  
  174. WARNING: Some back-up applications use non-standard boot sectors 
  175. for floppy disks. Replacing these boot sectors may cause files to 
  176. become inaccessible. If you must back-up onto floppy disks we 
  177. recommend you scan all files and disks before beginning.

  180. New types of files have been added to the list of file types that 
  181. will be scanned. 
  182.  
  183. New viruses are now able to infect PowerPoint files, Access 
  184. database templates and HTML scripts so .PPT, .XLA, .SCR 
  185. extensions have been added to the list of file types that should 
  186. be scanned.

  189. IPE is able to scan Office 2000 Word and Excel documents.
  190.  
  191. Some minor modification of the IPE code has allowed us to build 
  192. in the detection and cleaning of viruses which infect Word and 
  193. Excel 2000 documents.  Access 2000 and PowerPoint 2000 detection 
  194. is not yet enabled.

  197. IPE can now scan encrypted or password protected Word 6 and Excel documents.
  198.  
  199. These types of files can sometimes cause problems when IPE 
  200. attempts to scan encrypted files on a network server. These 
  201. improvements allow the files to be scanned.

  204. Power Point files for Office 97 can now be scanned.
  205.  
  206. Viruses can now infect and propagate from PowerPoint files so 
  207. detection and cleaning has been built into this version of IPE.  
  208. Detection for infected PowerPoint files from Office2000 will be 
  209. added at a later date.

  212. IPE can now scan files embedded within other files. 
  213.  
  214. Advances in the way common applications can store files means 
  215. that it is now possible to embed a MS Word file inside a 
  216. PowerPoint file.  Some types of files that were unlikely to be 
  217. targeted by a virus in the past, can now be targeted for 
  218. infection. In the past it was not possible for IPE to detect an 
  219. infected Excel document when it was embedded in a Word file. 
  220. Improvements in this version of IPE mean that we can now scan and 
  221. clean these embedded files.

  224. IPE can now check if you are scanning all of the files that are likely to be infected.
  225.  
  226. When you upgrade your version of IPE we carefully pick up the way 
  227. you have configured IPE, load the upgrade onto your machine and 
  228. then put the configuration back as it originally was.

  230. From time to time we add a new file extension to the list of 
  231. files that are to be scanned. If you have IPE installed for more 
  232. than a year some file extensions may NOT be in your list of file 
  233. extensions that are to be scanned.

  235. When you are installing your new upgrade you will see the Scan 
  236. File Types. If you chose Next> to continue past the screen and 
  237. your current list of file extensions does not have all of the 
  238. ones we recommend a dialog will appear and prompt to have your 
  239. list of file extensions updated to include all of those 
  240. recommended by IPE.

  266. virus attempts to infect and damage your PC. If you have a

  274. Edition virus dissection team will send an updated DAT file back 
  275. to you within 48 hours. This will allow you to detect and clean 
  276. the virus. (Standard response time is within 24 hour hours).
