Description
Coeli Stella 2000 is an astronomy suite that includes a full-featured planetarium, an observing log and list builder, Coeli Time Line (also known as Stella BC), a live ephemeris, a location browser, and sophisticated searches that embrace planets, comets, DSOs, and up to 300,000 stars. Planetarium effects include scintillation, extinction, refraction, and precession in point source, photo plate, and spotlight display styles, and the complete Messier catalog of image icons. Features include an integrated HTML guide to the solar system, a 1,000-term astronomical dictionary, and the second revised and enlarged edition of Aspects of Astronomy, a book-length tutorial covering topics such as "What are the Stars?" "Choosing a Telescope," "Cosmology," "Dark Matter," "Eclipses," and "The History of Astronomy."
The recently introduced drag mode provides complete plasticity into all your interactions with the planetarium display. Dragging the mouse automatically scrolls sky quadrants smoothly and quickly into view, as well as centering the projection in the process. Also, direct links to extensive DSO and planetary information on the Web have been incorporated into Reports and Coeli Solar Guide. An automatic search function instantly updates readouts and reports on any object your mouse pointer scrolls over. Other features include a revamped Logbook, a revision of Astrogloss A-Z, improved hyperlinking, and bug fixes.
Version 5.0 featured complete integration of Microsoft Agent speech technology, so that animated characters can guide you painlessly through the pronunciation of a myriad of arcane star names, read tutorials aloud, and give you immediate spoken guidance.
Version 5.01 included more legible fonts for both the Viewbar and Clock-bar. A new Blabbermouth setting for the Microsoft Genie was also added, talking you through many of Stella's features and windows. HTML Log (with user graphics) now runs side by side with the traditional text-based logbook. Settings such as Distance in Parsecs or Distance in LY can now be saved on report preferences.
Version 5.02 is a bug-fix and maintenance update.
Note: Some features in the unregistered version are disabled after 30 days or 100 uses. The registration price for the standard edition is $49.

The Bottom Line
"Easy and straightforward to use: the best in its class!"
Installation was the usual simple matter of double-clicking on the a Zip file after download. Winzip did the rest. My initial experience with Stella has been trouble-free and entirely bugless. Overall -- an excellent offering, the very best in its class. I think that the tiny minority of users who are reporting problems on these pages are attempting to install and use this software on already cluttered PC systems. One thing that must be said of Stella: she makes demands on system resources. That having been said, those resources are well-employed in providing the very best in astronomical information and a sky display second-to-none in realism and enjoyment. So, if you're serious about the sky, uninstall all that rubbish in your system tray and make room for Stella!
