FOREWORD
Welcome to Doom Legacy Launcher, 'DLL' in short.
Our goal when creating this program is to make using
Doom Legacy as user-friendly as possible.
CONTENTS
1. Setting Up
2. Display/Sound Options
3. Single Map
4. Demos
5. Multiplayer
6. Tips
[ 1. SETTING UP ]
To begin playing Doom Legacy you will need to tell the
Launcher where to find the Doom Legacy executable, as well as
where to find the different Doom versions that you have.
On the main window, click 'Setup...', then to the right
of the text box titled 'Doom Legacy Program', click the button
and select the executable file (legacy.exe) where you have
installed it on your harddrive.
In the 'Select Game WAD file' section, click the buttons
on the right and locate each of your Doom game's main WAD file.
For example Doom1 uses 'doom.wad', Doom2 uses 'doom2.wad'.
WARNING : doom3.wad is not a valide IWAD since it is only somes
additionnal resource needed by Doom Legacy.
You can choose which Doom version to play at any time,
by clicking one of the radio buttons in this window.
It is recommended to put all your wad in same directory
so you will have onely one configuration.
[ 2. DISPLAY AND SOUND OPTIONS ]
Click the 'Display/Sound..' button on the main window
to access Doom Legacy's game configuration settings.
- Render mode :
choose 'software' for the good old' 256 color software
mode.
choose '3Dfx Glide' only if you have a 3Dfx-chipset
based graphics card, and you have the latest Glide
drivers installed (version 3 or later).
choose 'OpenGL' if you have a graphic card who support
OpenGL. See the FAQ on the site about it for more
information.
choose 'MiniGL' if you want to use a minigl driver.
Minigl driver is a lighter version of OpenGL, it has
been introdiuse by Quake I, and supported by many
constructor of 3D graphic card so if OpenGL don't work
try with MiniGL. Also see the FAQ on the site about it
for more information.
Tip: use the 'F5' key to access the video modes menu
while you are in the game.
- Use Joystick :
choose one of the attached Joysticks to use in Doom
Legacy. This is useful if you have more than one
Joystick connected (eg: a classic joystick, and a
gamepad), you can choose which one you prefer to use.
- Cooperative sound :
when enabled, other programs playing sound through
'DirectSound' will be able to play while Doom Legacy
is running. For example you could disable the MIDI
music, and play MP3's in the background.
when DISABLED, you might get a better sound quality
and volume control since Doom Legacy will have full
control of the sound output.
- Disable Sound, Midi Music, CD Audio, Mouse :
these are trouble-shooting options, in case one of
these devices doesn't work well on your computer,
you can prevent Doom Legacy from using it.
If you always use CD music, you might want to turn
off the MIDI music, to free some resources.
[ 3. SINGLE MAP ]
This section let you start a customised game providing
standart option : like play internal maps and load external
maps.
To play internal maps just put the map you whant to play
and press OK.
For external map add it to the additionnal files and then
press OK.
[ 4. DEMOS ]
The demo section shows a directory of LMP's from
the same directory than the current selected IWAD (in
Game Setup). You can delete demos (Del button), Edit
parameters that are saved in demos (Edit button), and
play back your demos with whatever parameters you have
entered in the demos before.
The Demo section provides the same functionality
that my old utility named 'lmpmast'. Click on demos to
see their parameters, double-click a demo to play it
back.
[ 5. MULTIPLAYER ]
This section help you to start a network game. First you
must choise if you will join a game as client or host a game as
server. For this just check the good page client or server. Then
Choose protocol.
You can enable splitscreen, so you screen wil be splitted
in two and there can be two player playing on the same computer.
On the Client page : for TCP/IP protocol choose the IP
address of the server or if you are in a LAN you can detect it.
To join press OK.
On Server Page : You must know how many computer will join
you game and enter it in "Number of computers". Alos, you can choos
many game option
[ 6. TIPS ]
- The Launcher can create a shortcut for you on the desktop
or in the Start Menu. See the 'Misc Options' page in the
Help window.
- On the main window, below the title picture, you can see
the current settings of the main options, like the configu-
ration and main WAD file being used.
- Playing MP3's while Doom Legacy runs : if you use 'WinAmp'
or another MP3 player, make sure it is set to use
'DirectSound' as output, and enable the 'Cooperative sound'
option in the 'Display/Sound' section of the Launcher.
- The EXE specified in a demo must be in the same directory
than the current selected EXE in 'Game Setup' panel.
[ KNOWN BUGS ]
- Demos doesn't use the IWAD/EXE from the demo parameters,
only wad files are passed for now.
