17. Device Issues With Windows Media Player 7.0
1. Delay After Media Format, Media Initialize, or Canceled Backup
------------------------------------------------------------------------
A delay of a few seconds to several minutes may result after canceling
a format or initialize operation. Delays may also occur after you
cancel a backup job. Hard disk activity will occur while information
is removed from the catalog. Longer delays occur if the medium
contains a large number of files.
2. Tape Capacity
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Remaining tape capacity is not indicated for all tape drives.
This function is hardware dependent.
3. Possible Delays with Device View
------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you use "Device View" on a high capacity cartridge, it may take up
to 30 minutes for this operation to complete.
4. Tape Is Formatted, But Not Readable Error Message
------------------------------------------------------------------------
For optimal performance during backup and restore, close down all
other applications running in the background (TSR's). This includes
virus checkers, screen savers, and shell programs. Errors associated
with background applications include tape not readable, general page
faults, and slow performance.
5. Restores Requiring Multiple Media
------------------------------------------------------------------------
After selecting files to restore and clicking Start, the Media
Required box will appear, but may not display all the media required
to complete a restore for a multiple media backup job. For backup
jobs requiring more than one medium, it is recommended that you know
the sequence in which the media were filled. To ensure a complete
restore, insert the media in sequence until all of the requested
files have been restored.
6. Software Incompatible with Backup Exec Desktop Pro
------------------------------------------------------------------------
LAPTOP.SYS is a file that is provided on some portable computers.
Backup Exec Desktop Pro cannot be installed on laptops that have
LAPTOP.SYS installed, because it may cause Windows NT to
fail during system startup. For more information on this issue, please
contact your system manufacturer. This problem does not occur on
Windows 95/98 systems.
7. Erasing CD-RW Media
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Backup Exec Desktop Pro does not support quick-erased CD-RW media. If you are using
CD-RW media that has been quick-erased, a full-erase should be
performed on this media before using it with Backup Exec Desktop Pro.
8. File Size Limit for Backup or Restore
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Backup Exec Desktop Pro cannot backup or restore a single file that exceeds 4GB.
9. Import Catalog and File Versions
------------------------------------------------------------------------
When importing a catalog of backup sets that contain multiple versions
of the same file, selecting Folder View will display the oldest version
of that file. To display the most current version of the file, select
Device View, or Media View.
10. USB Devices
------------------------------------------------------------------------
USB devices are not supported in Windows 95 or Windows NT Workstation.
Disaster Recovery functionality will not be available when using a USB
device.
11. Restoring NTFS Backup Sets to FAT
------------------------------------------------------------------------
When restoring a backup set created on NTFS to a FAT volume, some compare
errors may be reported. This is normal as NTFS contains security stream
information, which FAT does not support. The data will be restored correctly
to your FAT volume without the security stream information.
12. Backup Exec Desktop Pro and Active Desktop Applications
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Backup Exec Desktop Pro may report file miscompares of your Active Desktop applications
if they are enabled during a backup. This is normal behavior as these
applications are dynamically updated and therefore will not match archived
copies.
13. Disaster Recovery for Windows NT on LS-120 Drives
------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. To restore your Disaster Recovery Set using an LS-120 in Windows NT,
boot from Windows NT Workstation Setup Boot Disk (diskette #1 of the DR Set).
2. Press the F6 key while the dialog saying that Setup is inspecting your
computer's hardware configuration appears on your screen.
3. Specify an additional device when prompted to do so.
4. Choose 'IDE CD-ROM (ATAPI 1.2)/PCI IDE Controller' and press Enter.
5. You may now continue the Disaster Recovery process.
14. Performing Disaster Recovery for Windows NT 4.0 Without
Disaster Recovery Diskettes
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some PC system manufacturers ship versions of the Windows NT 4.0 CD
that contain limitations affecting the Disaster Recovery feature
of Backup Exec Desktop Pro. If, while creating Disaster
Recovery diskettes, Backup Exec Desktop Pro detects that your Windows CD
cannot be used to create Disaster Recovery diskettes, you must follow the
steps listed below to recover your data:
Backup Exec Desktop Pro can protect the data on your NT Workstation
in the event of a hard drive failure. The Disaster Recovery process allows
you to recover lost data and return your system to full operation.
You may choose to back up the NT Workstation Registry by selecting
it in the Options settings under the Advanced tab. By default,
Backup Exec Desktop Pro will back up the registry when the Windows
Directory is selected for backup. The NT Workstation Registry must be
backed up in order to properly restore your system in the event of a
hard drive failure.
To use Disaster Recovery:
1. Replace all damaged hardware and properly format the destination
drive (see your Windows NT manual for assistance).
2. Start your computer with the Windows NT system disk in your
floppy drive (or in your CD-ROM drive if you have a bootable
CD-ROM drive).
3. Follow all instructions to perform a minimal re-install of
Windows NT Workstation, including any Service Packs, and reboot
your machine when prompted. Configurations will be restored later.
4. Install Backup Exec Desktop Pro.
5. When installation is complete, click the Start menu, select
Programs, then select Backup Exec Desktop Pro.
The startup dialog screen appears. Click Close.
6. From the Restore tab, select a device in the Restore from device
drop-down list box.
7. Insert the volume containing the last full backup of your system.
8. Select Device View, then select the last full backup on the
volume.
9. From the Restore tab, click Options, General tab and select the
Always replace the file on my computer checkbox.
10. Click the Advanced tab and select the Restore Windows Registry
checkbox, then click Start.
11. Reboot your machine.
NOTE: Files that were reported as "busy" should be restored at this
time. If you wish to restore these files, follow the instructions
below for restoring busy files.
To restore busy files;
1. Click the Start menu, select Programs, then select
Backup Exec Desktop Pro. The Startup dialog screen appears. Click Close.
2. From the Restore tab, select a device in the Restore from device
drop-down list box.
3. Insert the volume containing the last full backup of your system.
4. Select Device View, then select the last full backup on the
volume.
5. From the Restore tab, check the files that were reported busy.
6. Click Options, General tab and select the Always replace the file
on my computer checkbox.
7. Click the Advanced tab and de-select the Restore Windows Registry
checkbox, then click Start.
8. Reboot your machine.
If you have any differential or incremental backups performed after
the last full backup, restore those as required.
When you have restored all the files from your backup volumes, reboot
the machine to complete your recovery.
15. Conflict With Microsoft System Restore
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Microsoft System Restore periodically creates restore points to which
you can return your system in the event of a system error or data loss.
If you format your hard drive, then use Backup Exec Desktop Pro to recover your
system, these restore points cannot be restored.
16. PCHealth Updates on Windows ME
------------------------------------------------------------------------
PCHealth performs automatic updates to your Windows ME (Millennium Edition)
system via the Internet. Backup Exec Desktop Pro may not be able to restore PCHealth
directories if an update occurs during a backup or restore. Also, if a
PCHealth update occurs after you perform a backup, you may receive
errors when attempting to compare these files. To avoid this conflict,
ensure that your PCHealth updates do not occur during a backup or restore
operation. For information on how to re-schedule your PCHealth updates,
consult your Windows ME documentation.
17. Device Issues With Windows Media Player 7.0
------------------------------------------------------------------------
A conflict may exist between Backup Exec Desktop Pro and early versions of
Windows Media Player 7.0. If Backup Exec Desktop Pro no longer detects the
devices attached to your system after installing Media Player 7.0, you
must reinstall Backup Exec Desktop Pro.
