supplements the VERITAS Backup Desktop Exec Pro user's manual and on-line help.
If information in the user's manual or help file conflicts with
information presented here, the information in this README.TXT file

1. Delay After Media Format, Media Initialize, or Canceled Backup
------------------------------------------------------------------------
A delay of a few seconds to several minutes may result after canceling
a format or initialize operation. Delays may also occur after you
cancel a backup job. Hard disk activity will occur while information
is removed from the catalog. Longer delays occur if the medium
contains a large number of files.
2. Tape Capacity
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Remaining tape capacity is not indicated for all tape drives.
This function is hardware dependent.
3. Possible Delays with Device View
------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you use "Device View" on a high capacity cartridge, it may take up
to 30 minutes for this operation to complete.
4. Tape Is Formatted, But Not Readable Error Message
------------------------------------------------------------------------
For optimal performance during backup and restore, close down all
other applications running in the background (TSR's). This includes
virus checkers, screen savers, and shell programs. Errors associated
with background applications include tape not readable, general page
faults, and slow performance.
5. Restores Requiring Multiple Media
------------------------------------------------------------------------
After selecting files to restore and clicking Start, the Media
Required box will appear, but may not display all the media required
to complete a restore for a multiple media backup job. For backup
jobs requiring more than one medium, it is recommended that you know
the sequence in which the media were filled. To ensure a complete
restore, insert the media in sequence until all of the requested
files have been restored.
6. Software Incompatible with Backup Exec Desktop Pro
------------------------------------------------------------------------
LAPTOP.SYS is a file that is provided on some portable computers.
Backup Exec Desktop Pro cannot be installed on laptops that have
LAPTOP.SYS installed, because it may cause Windows NT to
fail during system startup. For more information on this issue, please
contact your system manufacturer. This problem does not occur on
Windows 95/98 systems.
7. Erasing CD-RW Media
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Backup Exec Desktop Pro does not support quick-erased CD-RW media. If you are using
CD-RW media that has been quick-erased, a full-erase should be
performed on this media before using it with Backup Exec Desktop Pro.
8. File Size Limit for Backup or Restore
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Backup Exec Desktop Pro cannot backup or restore a single file that exceeds 4GB.
9. Import Catalog and File Versions
------------------------------------------------------------------------
When importing a catalog of backup sets that contain multiple versions
of the same file, selecting Folder View will display the oldest version
of that file. To display the most current version of the file, select
Device View, or Media View.
10. USB and Firewire (1394) Devices
------------------------------------------------------------------------
USB and Firewire (1394) devices are not supported in Windows 95 or
Windows NT Workstation. Disaster Recovery functionality will not be
available when using a USB or Firewire device.
11. Restoring NTFS Backup Sets to FAT
------------------------------------------------------------------------
When restoring a backup set created on NTFS to a FAT volume, some compare
errors may be reported. This is normal as NTFS contains security stream
information, which FAT does not support. The data will be restored correctly
to your FAT volume without the security stream information.
12. Scheduling Backup Jobs in Windows 2000
------------------------------------------------------------------------
When scheduling a backup job, Backup Exec Desktop Pro uses only your Windows username and
password, not your network information. Therefore, please enter your
Windows username and password in the field: "Run job as if were started by."
13. Sparse Files
------------------------------------------------------------------------
A significant difference between the estimated size and the actual byte
count may occur if your operating system is set to use sparse files. The
reported difference will have no effect on the integrity of your data.
14. Backup Exec Desktop Pro and Active Desktop Applications
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Backup Exec Desktop Pro may report file miscompares of your Active Desktop applications
if they are enabled during a backup. This is normal behavior as these
applications are dynamically updated and therefore will not match archived
copies.
15. Disaster Recovery for Windows NT on LS-120 Drives
------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. To restore your Disaster Recovery Set using an LS-120 in Windows NT,
boot from Windows NT Workstation Setup Boot Disk (diskette #1 of the DR Set).
2. Press the F6 key while the dialog saying that Setup is inspecting your
computer's hardware configuration appears on your screen.
3. Specify an additional device when prompted to do so.
4. Choose 'IDE CD-ROM (ATAPI 1.2)/PCI IDE Controller' and press Enter.
5. You may now continue the Disaster Recovery process.
16. Device Issues With Windows Media Player 7.0
------------------------------------------------------------------------
A conflict may exist between Backup Exec Desktop Pro and early versions of
Windows Media Player 7.0. If Backup Exec Desktop Pro no longer detects the
devices attached to your system after installing Media Player 7.0, you
must reinstall Backup Exec Desktop Pro.
