  1. ÇCHKDSK won't run with Encrypted Magic Folders installed.  We disable 
  2. ChkDsk because it can delete all your invisible files, including the 
  3. file containing your password data.  (You can temporarily re-enable it 
  4. from the "Properties" menu.)  For more information select "Help" at the 
  5. main screen. 
  6.  
  7. ChkDsk is the only program we've tested that causes a problem.  The 
  8. following have been tested and work fine with Encrypted Magic Folders: 
  9. SCANDISK, DEFRAG, Norton Disk Doctor, and Norton Speed Disk.  
  10.  
  11. Do you use any other disk fix or defragmenting utilities not listed here? 
  12. üWith tens of thousands of users no one's reported problems with any disk 
  13. utility other than CHKDSK.  However, you should still test your disk fix 
  14. and/or defragmenting utilities to see if they're safe to use with 
  15. Encrypted Magic Folders.  To do so, run them when your magic folders are 
  16. visible and invisible.  DO NOT FIX ANY REPORTED ERRORS.  If more errors 
  17. are reported when your folders are invisible than when they're visible 
  18. then do one of the following: 
  19.  
  20. 1.  Remove the utilities (so you can't use them) or remove Encrypted 
  21. Magic Folders. 
  22.  
  23. 2.  Use only one account in Encrypted Magic Folders (just use the Master 
  24. Account already created) and move the offending utility into one of your 
  25. invisible folders.  That way it can only be run when all folders and 
  26. files are visible, and thereby safe. 
  27.

  31. âTo register via modem from outside the US or Canada please enter those 
  32. numbers that must be dialed to place a direct call to the United States.  
  33. These numbers often include a prefix to place an international call 
  34. followed by the country code for the United States.  If you want to put 
  35. delays in your prefix dialing string, use a comma for every two second 
  36. delay needed.

  38. Note: A successful registration may not be possible if a good modem 
  39. connection cannot be made due to line quality or delays.  In addition, 
  40. international calling rates can be expensive, but in most cases will 
  41. still be less than the $4 mailing surcharge added to overseas orders that 
  42. are registered by other means.

  45. When you registered you received a 16 digit registration key *or* a 
  46. file called EMF.SYS which tells Encrypted Magic Folders you're a 
  47. registered user.  Both are customized with your personal information (See 
  48. "Registered to..." in the "Registration" Menu) and are for your use only.  
  49. Giving either one to others is illegal. 
  50.  
  51. If you have EMF.SYS, keep it in your \WINDOWS folder.
  52.  
  53. One registration benefit is free updates, provided you 
  54. download them.  You can get the latest version at our WEB site:

  58. Just download the latest version and extract it into the directory where 
  59. the current version is located.

  63. àOne or more of the files needed to restore the last registered version 
  64. are missing.  If you got a disk from us when you registered (modem 
  65. registrants don't unless they request one) then you can re-install that 
  66. version.

  68. A better option is to visit our WEB page at: "pc-magic.com/", go to 
  69. the "Previous versions" page and click on the latest version created 
  70. within six months of your registration.
  71. åYou can have up to 5 Magic Folder accounts.  Each account can create 
  72. their own list of magic folders that are invisible to all other 
  73. accounts.  However, only your "Master" account can un-install Magic 
  74. Folders and create new accounts.

  76. If multiple accounts are created, no account has access to all the hidden 
  77. folders.  Therefore you shouldn't create multiple accounts if you're 
  78. hiding an "un-safe" disk utility.  Having multiple accounts also makes 
  79. backups tougher because no account has complete access to all hidden 
  80. folders.  See "Multiple Accounts" in "Help" for more important 
  81. information.

  112. into Encrypted Magic Folders should you forget your password.  It also 
  113. lets you disable Encrypted Magic Folders from DOS should you not be able 
  114. to use the "Uninstall" feature within Encrypted Magic Folders.

  116. To create your KeyDisk put a blank, formatted disk in your floppy drive.
  117.  
  118. What drive is your KeyDisk in?
  119. èYour KeyDisk has been created.  Remove your KeyDisk now and write the 
  120. following on its label: 
  121.  
  122. "EMF KeyDisk - See README.TXT if you forget password 
  123. or need to uninstall and can't run EMF." 
  124.

  126. ïEncrypted Magic Folder KeyDisk

  130. If you forget your password insert this KeyDisk, run Encrypted Magic 
  131.  
  132. Folders and attempt to enter your password three times.  After the third 
  133.  
  134. attempt Encrypted Magic Folders will use this disk as a key to let you 
  135.  
  136. in.  This only lets you into the Master Account.  If you forget the 
  137.  
  138. password to another account you will have to un-install Encrypted Magic 
  139.  
  140. Folders and re-install it again to gain access to all the hidden folders.

  143. Can't run Encrypted Magic Folders?
  144.  
  145. If you need to uninstall Encrypted Magic Folders and you can't use the 
  146.  
  147. Un-install feature inside Encrypted Magic Folders then insert this disk 
  148.  
  149. into drive A: or B:  At the DOS prompt enter "A:" (or "B:") and then 
  150.  
  151. enter "DISABLE". 
  152.  
  153. îYou can use Encrypted Magic Folders to restrict access to your computer.  
  154. With "AutoStart" installed Encrypted Magic Folders asks you for your 
  155. password whenever your computer boots.  Enter your password and your 
  156. magic folders will automatically become visible.  How Encrypted Magic 
  157. Folders handles incorrect passwords depends on which of the following two 
  158. options you choose.  Select "Cancel" if you don't wish to install 
  159. "AutoStart". 
  160.  
  161. ìÄEncrypted Magic Folders didn't load correctly.  MF.EXE (or whatever you 
  162. renamed it during installation) needs to be run from within your 
  163. AUTOEXEC.BAT file.  Make sure the "LH pathname\MF.EXE" statement (where 
  164. "pathname" is the directory where MF.EXE is located) is in the 
  165. AUTOEXEC.BAT file and that it directly proceeds the line that runs 
  166. Windows.  If it is and things still don't work, please send e-mail to 
  167. support@pc-magic.com and reference Err 97. 
  168.  
  169. ÅCHKDSK has been temporarily enabled.  You can copy, move, delete, or use 
  170. it.  However, keep in mind that using CHKDSK with Encrypted Magic Folders 
  171. can delete any folders that are hidden at the time you use CHKDSK as 
  172. well as the file containing your password data.  See "Help" for details. 
  173.  
  174. CHKDSK access will stay enabled until you re-boot, turn off your 
  175. computer, or run Encrypted Magic Folders.
  176. ÉThis installation of Encrypted Magic Folders has multiple accounts, one 
  177. or more of which have encrypted folders.  Uninstalling now will make the 
  178. folders belonging to the other accounts visible but it will not decrypt 
  179. their encrypted folders.  
  180.  
  181. To decrypt encrypted folders belonging to other accounts:  
  182. Select "Switch to another account" under "Functions".  Once in the 
  183. account select "Remove this account" under "Functions".  When all 
  184. accounts with encrypted folders have been removed then come back and 
  185. uninstall. 
  186.  
  187. As a much slower option you can continue with the uninstall and later use  
  188. DECRYPT.EXE to decrypt the encrypted folders belonging to the other 
  189. accounts.  Do you wish to continue with the uninstall? 
  190. æIf you don't need the encryption functions of Encrypted Magic Folders 
  191. then you may want to check out it's little brother which has all the 
  192. functionality of EMF without the encryption option.  At $29 the 
  193. registration for Magic Folders is half that of EMF.  You can get the 
  194. latest version of Magic Folders at http://www.pc-magic.com 
  195. ÆEncrypted Magic Folders requires Windows 95.  However, Magic Folders 
  196. (which is identical to EMF except you can't encrypt your magic folders) 
  197. runs in Win95, Windows 3.x (except for Win3.11 with 32BFA activated) and 
  198. DOS and it's half the price.  You can get Magic Folders at

  203. ôIn addition to Hiding and Encrypting your files you can Scramble the 
  204. filenames by selecting "Hide, Encrypt, Scramble"
  205.  
  206. Scrambling renames the files in the affected folder(s) to something non-
  207. descript when your folders are hidden.  The benefit is that if someone 
  208. were to disable EMF the names of your files would give no clue as to 
  209. their contents. 
  210.  
  211. Unlike file encryption, the unscrambling of filenames does not occur as 
  212. you use each file but is done all at once when you enter your password.  
  213. Likewise filename scrambling is done when you hide your folders, shut 
  214. down, or enter another password.  You must wait during these events while 
  215. the filenames in all affected folders are scrambled or unscrambled.  In 
  216. addition, if you turn off the computer (without using Shutdown) while 
  217. your folders are visible then filenames won't be scrambled. 
  218.  
  219. WARNING: Filename scrambling requires the use of longfilenames. In the 
  220. highly unlikely event you find a file whose name is scrambled simply 
  221. leave it where it is and use DECRYPT to recover the original name.
  222.  
  223. öYou must uninstall Magic Folders before installing "Encrypted Magic 
  224. Folders" (EMF).  You can uninstall Magic Folders by using DISABLE on your 
  225. Magic Folders KeyDisk or by using the "Uninstall" function inside Magic 
  226. Folders.                              
  227.  
  228. Once you've uninstalled Magic Folders and re-booted then come back and 
  229. install EMF.  Don't forget to reboot after uninstalling Magic Folders.

  231. òAuto-Cryption is the EMF function that automatically decrypts and 
  232. encrypts the files in your encrypted folders as you use them.  There may 
  233. be situations were you wish to disable Auto-Cryption.  For example, when 
  234. making backups you may not want your encrypted files to be automatically 
  235. decrypted when they're copied out of the encrypted folder to your 
  236. backup disk.  If you were to disable Auto-Cryption then the files would 
  237. remain encrypted when copied to your backup disk.
  238.  
  239. You may also wish to disable Auto-Cryption just to prove to yourself that 
  240. EMF is actually encrypting your files and we aren't selling you the 
  241. Emperor's clothes.
  242.  
  243. If you disable Auto-Cryption it only stays disabled until you turn off 
  244. your computer or run EMF again.  Filename scrambling is disabled when 
  245. Auto-Cryption is disabled.
  246. ûZipFolders(tm) must be uninstalled or disabled in order to run Encrypted 
  247. Magic Folders.  If for some reason you choose to disable ZipFolders(tm) 
  248. instead of uninstalling it then remember that it must be disabled every 
  249. time you boot. 
  250.  
  251. Failure to disable ZipFolders may result in system lock-ups and other 
  252. errors.
  253. ù"AutoStart" lets you use EMF to restrict access to your computer.  
  254.  
  255. With "AutoStart" enabled EMF asks you for your password whenever your 
  256. computer boots.  Enter your password and your magic folders will 
  257. automatically become visible.  Those without the correct password can 
  258. either be denied all access to the computer or just denied access to your 
  259. hidden folders.  The choice is yours. 
  260. ÿCHKDSK won't run with Encrypted Magic Folders installed.  We disable 
  261. ChkDsk because it can delete all your invisible files including the file 
  262. containing your password data.  If this option is checked then CHKDSK 
  263. protection is in place and you cannot use CHKDSK. 
  264.  
  265. There may be situations where you want to be able to use CHKDSK.  For 
  266. example, Win95 requires access to CHKDSK when creating an Emergency 
  267. access disk.  To allow CHKDSK access then un-select this option.  CHKDSK 
  268. access will only be in effect until you restart your computer or use EMF 
  269. again.
  270.  
  271. Ö cannot be decrypted because it 
  272. is in use by another program or access is denied for another reason.  
  273. Task switch to the program using this file and close it.  Then return 
  274. here and click "Retry".  Or click "Ignore" to skip this file and contine. 
  275. ÜNorton's NAVDX program is being loaded in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.  It 
  276. has been known to lock up some computers during the boot process when 
  277. used with EMF.  
  278.  
  279. We suggest you let us remove NAVDX from the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.  All NAVDX 
  280. does is provide a small amount of protection between when DOS loads and 
  281. Windows starts loading.  Norton doesn't even install it by default in 
  282. later versions.  
  283.  
  284. Another option is to update to the latest version of NAVDX as it appears 
  285. not to have the problem.  However, we highly suggest you let us remove it 
  286. from your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. 
  287.  
  288. Would you like us to disable the loading of NAVDX.EXE in your 
  289. AUTOEXEC.BAT file?

  292. When you registered you received a file called EMF.SYS which tells 
  293. Encrypted Magic Folders you're a registered user.  EMF.SYS has been 
  294. customized with your personal information and is for your use only.  
  295. Giving EMF.SYS to others is illegal.

  297. You should backup EMF.SYS as there's a $5 charge if we need to replace 
  298. it.  Would you like to back it up to your KeyDisk?
  299. £This directory has its System and/or Hidden attribute set.  This is 
  300. usually done by Windows to keep users from having access to the contents 
  301. of this folder.  There is no telling how Windows or other programs will 
  302. react if you hide this system folder.  It may cause all sorts of serious 
  303. trouble.  
  304.  
  305. REMEMBER:  If Windows or any other programs begin acting strangely or 
  306. locking up then your first move should be to remove any system folders 
  307. from your hidden folders list. 
  308.  
  309. Are you sure you wish to hide this folder?
  310. ¥This option attempts to get Explorer to update it's listings to reflect 
  311. the status of your hidden folders whenever EMF exits.  It doesn't always 
  312. work - we think because Explorer doesn't refresh if the disk cache hasn't 
  313. changed.  Enabling "Write to Folders" may also help force Explorer to 
  314. refresh.  The disadvantage to having this option active is that Explorer 
  315. takes a few seconds to refresh its file listings. 
  316.  
  317. ₧This option attempts to refresh the desktop to accurately reflect the 
  318. status of your hidden folders whenever EMF exits.  Because it takes a few 
  319. seconds to refresh the desktop there's no need to have this option active 
  320. if your desktop isn't affected by your hidden folders. 
  321. ƒThis option creates and then deletes a file in each of your hidden 
  322. folders when EMF exits in an attempt to get Windows to update the disk 
  323. cache.  Sometimes this works to force programs to update their listings 
  324. to reflect the status of your hidden folders.  Sometimes it doesn't.  We 
  325. can only hide the files, we can't control how programs react when they 
  326. can't find the hidden files. 
  327.  
  328. áAt the password screen, pressing Enter normally puts you into EMF.  Some 
  329. users have asked us if we could make it so that pressing Enter at the 
  330. password screen exits in the same manner as clicking on the yellow icon 
  331. (exits and puts the "Hide Folders" icon on the taskbar).  This option 
  332. tells EMF to do just that.  
  333.  
  334. If this option is active then you get into EMF by entering your password 
  335. and clicking on "OK". 
  336. íYour phone number will be recorded when your modem phones in your 
  337. registration.  This allows us to prosecute those who defraud us.  
  338.  
  339. For the vast majority who are honest we apologize for this 
  340. message and want to assure you that we do NOT release to others your 
  341. phone number, or for that matter, any of your registration information.
