Winamp is an audio player. It plays music, or any other recorded sound, on your computer. Winamp also has a number of popular plug-ins for visualization (cool effects that synchronize with the music), input, output, and other purposes. It also allows the look of its interface to be customized through the use of skins. Though Winamp is most popular as a player for MP3s (MPEG audio layer 3 files), it also supports a number of other formats. WinAMP 2.7 (Complete Version) is an excellent, highly-customizable audio file player, CD player, and MP3 encoder.
WinAMP plays MOD, WAV, MJuice, WMA, ASFS, VOC, CD audio, and MPEG layer 2 and 3 file formats. You can customize its appearance using different "skins" that are available from the author's Web site. You can have WinAMP run on top of all other applications, and there is an option to shrink the main window down to a narrow "windowshade" that takes up very little desktop space.
WinAMP includes a spectrum analyzer, a CD audio decoder, an MPEG decoder, and a digital equalizer. It supports playlists, it includes a tag editor, and it can retrieve track information from the Internet CDDB database. It also supports downsampling and downmixing.
There are a variety of plug-ins available from the author's Web site which extend the functionality of WinAMP.
This "Complete Version" of WinAMP plays all audio formats, including WMA and ASFS and it comes with the WinAMP visualization studio.
This latest version includes an MP3 decoder with a better tag editor and some bug fixes. The MOD decoder and CDDA have been greatly enhanced. This release also includes a direct sound output plug-in, faster playlist loading and editing, and much more.
