  1. HISTORY OF THE SOFTWARE

  4. Python was created in the early 1990s by Guido van Rossum at Stichting
  5. Mathematisch Centrum (CWI) in the Netherlands as a successor of a
  6. language called ABC.  Guido is Python's principal author, although it
  7. includes many contributions from others.  The last version released
  8. from CWI was Python 1.2.  In 1995, Guido continued his work on Python
  9. at the Corporation for National Research Initiatives (CNRI) in Reston,
  10. Virginia where he released several versions of the software.  Python
  11. 1.6 was the last of the versions released by CNRI.  In 2000, Guido and
  12. the Python core developement team moved to BeOpen.com to form the
  13. BeOpen PythonLabs team (www.pythonlabs.com).  Python 2.0 is the first
  14. release from PythonLabs.  Thanks to the many outside volunteers who
  15. have worked under Guido's direction to make this release possible.

  25. 1. This LICENSE AGREEMENT is between BeOpen.com ("BeOpen"), having an
  26. office at 160 Saratoga Avenue, Santa Clara, CA 95051, and the
  27. Individual or Organization ("Licensee") accessing and otherwise using
  28. this software in source or binary form and its associated
  29. documentation ("the Software").

  31. 2. Subject to the terms and conditions of this BeOpen Python License
  32. Agreement, BeOpen hereby grants Licensee a non-exclusive,
  33. royalty-free, world-wide license to reproduce, analyze, test, perform
  34. and/or display publicly, prepare derivative works, distribute, and
  35. otherwise use the Software alone or in any derivative version,
  36. provided, however, that the BeOpen Python License is retained in the
  37. Software, alone or in any derivative version prepared by Licensee.

  39. 3. BeOpen is making the Software available to Licensee on an "AS IS"
  40. basis.  BEOPEN MAKES NO REPRESENTATIONS OR WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR
  41. IMPLIED.  BY WAY OF EXAMPLE, BUT NOT LIMITATION, BEOPEN MAKES NO AND
  42. DISCLAIMS ANY REPRESENTATION OR WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS

  55. respects by the law of the State of California, excluding conflict of

  57. create any relationship of agency, partnership, or joint venture
  58. between BeOpen and Licensee.  This License Agreement does not grant
  59. permission to use BeOpen trademarks or trade names in a trademark
  60. sense to endorse or promote products or services of Licensee, or any
  61. third party.  As an exception, the "BeOpen Python" logos available at
  62. http://www.pythonlabs.com/logos.html may be used according to the
  63. permissions granted on that web page.

  66. agrees to be bound by the terms and conditions of this License

  77. OTHERWISE USING PYTHON 1.6 SOFTWARE, YOU ARE DEEMED TO HAVE AGREED TO
  78. THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF THIS LICENSE AGREEMENT.

  80. 1. This LICENSE AGREEMENT is between the Corporation for National
  81. Research Initiatives, having an office at 1895 Preston White Drive,
  82. Reston, VA 20191 ("CNRI"), and the Individual or Organization
  83. ("Licensee") accessing and otherwise using Python 1.6 software in
  84. source or binary form and its associated documentation, as released at
  85. the www.python.org Internet site on September 5, 2000 ("Python 1.6").

  87. 2. Subject to the terms and conditions of this License Agreement, CNRI
  88. hereby grants Licensee a nonexclusive, royalty-free, world-wide
  89. license to reproduce, analyze, test, perform and/or display publicly,
  90. prepare derivative works, distribute, and otherwise use Python 1.6
  91. alone or in any derivative version, provided, however, that CNRI's
  92. License Agreement and CNRI's notice of copyright, i.e., "Copyright (c)
  93. 1995-2000 Corporation for National Research Initiatives; All Rights
  94. Reserved" are retained in Python 1.6 alone or in any derivative
  95. version prepared by

  97. Licensee. Alternately, in lieu of CNRI's License Agreement, Licensee
  98. may substitute the following text (omitting the quotes): "Python 1.6
  99. is made available subject to the terms and conditions in CNRI's
  100. License Agreement. This Agreement together with Python 1.6 may be
  101. located on the Internet using the following unique, persistent
  102. identifier (known as a handle): 1895.22/1012. This Agreement may also
  103. be obtained from a proxy server on the Internet using the following
  104. URL: http://hdl.handle.net/1895.22/1012".

  106. 3. In the event Licensee prepares a derivative work that is based on
  107. or incorporates Python 1.6 or any part thereof, and wants to make the
  108. derivative work available to others as provided herein, then Licensee
  109. hereby agrees to include in any such work a brief summary of the
  110. changes made to Python 1.6.

  112. 4. CNRI is making Python 1.6 available to Licensee on an "AS IS"
