  1. This release contains the 2001.01.01 version of Anvil Studio by Willow Software.
  2. It replaces the old versions named ast98xx.zip/exe, mstudioZ.exe.
  3.  
  4. mstudioZ.exe and AST0009.EXE are self-extracting setup files.
  5. AST0009.ZIP is the equivalent ZIP file (run the program SETUP.EXE).
  6.                                     
  7. Anvil Studio is a "Freeware" program that runs under Windows 95, Windows 98,
  8. Windows NT 4.0, and Windows 2000.
  9. It supports multi-track recording, composing, and editing of music
  10. using AUDIO, MIDI, and sampled percussions.
  11. Audio effects include delay, pitch change, filtering, and reverse.
  12. Anvil Studio is designed to work with optional accessories from
  13. Willow Software such as sheet music printing, piano exercises,
  14. ear training exercises, and voice-pitch analysis.
  15.  
  16. Requires 16 meg RAM (32 meg for Audio recording), and a Sound card.
  17. To run under Windows NT 4.0, it requires Microsoft's NT Service Pack 3,
  18. available for download from Microsoft's WEB sites at:

  44. Fixed problems in the 2001.01.01 version include:
  45.  o  Clicking on a Begin/End Repeat symbol or Double-Bar on the staff
  46.     sometimes failed to properly select the item.
  47.  o  A bug was fixed that had been introduced in version 2000.12.06 that
  48.     caused Filtering with High-Pass, Low-Pass, Band-Pass, Band-Stop
  49.     on stereo audio channels to not work properly.

  52.  o  Added Normalize as filter-kind to maximize an audio-track's "head-room".

  61.  o  Edit / Insert at the end of an audio track was causing extra blank sound to
  62.     be added to the end of the audio track.
  63.  o  When loading a sample-set on the Rhythm screen, the samples can now
  64.     be used immediately.

  66. New features in the 2000.12.02 version include:
  67.  o  Added Full-Screen checkbox to Piano-Roll and Rhythm composers
  68.     so the editing grid fills the entire screen.
  69.  o  Improved the speed and quality of the Audio-track's Filter function.
  70.  o  Added Audio Filter that Zero-averages a wave, adjusting each
  71.     sample up or down so that the entire wave's average is zero.
  72.  o  Increased the number of Audio Samples to:
  73.     15 when Multi-Audio 1/8 is installed, and
  74.     30 when Multi-Audio 4/8 is installed.
  75.  o  When a song is done playing, it now leaves the cursor at the
  76.     end of the song, to make it easier to edit the end a song being composed.

  78.     o  Songs with an UpBeat at the start were sometimes displaying
  79.        noteds inacurately after the first screen.

  81. Fixed problems in the 2000.11.04 version include:
  82.  o  A bug was introduced into version 2000.11.01 that prevented
  83.     changing key signatures in the middle of a track.
  84.  o  Dragging notes to the staff could not be undone, and caused the
  85.     song's current position to get reset to the start.
  86.  o  Changing volume of a selected group of notes sometimes changed
  87.     the volume of the first note that followed the selected group.

  89. New features in the 2000.11.03 version include:
  90.  o  Each audio track and sample has its own delay attributes instead of
  91.     global delay attributes applying to all tracks and samples.
  92.  o  Fixed problems:
  93.      o  After changing the song's position to anywhere but the start of
  94.         the song, it would sometimes produce no sound until it was rewound to the start.

  96. Fixed problems in the 2000.11.02 version include:
  97.  o  Anvil Studio was locking up the Audio CD Player the whole time.
  98.     It now just locks it when the View / CD Player menu item is selected.
  99.  o  Overflow errors occurred with some dual-monitor systems when
  100.     displaying the Rhythm editor in full-screen mode.
  101.  o  Comments for Track 0 can now be edited by selecting
  102.     Comments from the View menu, and setting the Track field to None.

  104. Fixed problems in the 2000.11.01 version include:
  105.  o  Improved the mechanism for loading SoundFont (.SF2) files.
  106.  
  107. Fixed problems in the 2000.10.03 version include:
  108.  o  Loading SoundFont (.SF2) files sometimes failed.
  109.  o  On rhythm tracks and when using Piano Roll view, it was not
  110.     possible to quantitize selected measure - only the entire track.

  112. New features in the 2000.10.02 version include:
  113.  o  Added option to record and play MIDI System Exclusive messages
  114.  o  Added access to multiple SoundFont patches on Rhythm Tracks.
  115.  o  Fixed problems:
  116.     o  When programs saved on the View / Perform menu's screen included
  117.        a Rhythm Tool with over 256 notes, the program could not be
  118.        reloaded.  Now the tool's property can have an unlimited number of notes.
  119.     o  Some lyrics caused note stems to disappear.
  120.     o  An extra initial bar was being drawn for keys other than C Maj.
  121.     o  Since version 2000.07.01, if two notes in a chord were both staccato,
  122.        the staccato dots were drawn under both of them instead of just one.

  124. Fixed problems in the 2000.09.02 version include:
  125.  o  The View / Lyrics menu item was causing bits and pieces of the last
  126.     verse to be copied to additional, non-existent verses.

  129.  o  Fixed some problems with File / Repair Song that allow it to repair
  130.     more kinds of badly-formatted midi files.
  131.  o  The Reverse menu item has been accidentally disabled in the Edit menu

  133.  o  Fixed a problem where the Pro-Mix accessory was causing runtime
  134.     errors when you clicked beyond the end of an audio track that was shorter
  135.     than other tracks in the song.

  137. Fixed problems in the 2000.07.02 version include:
  138.  o  In 2000.07.01, a bug was introduced that caused Anvil Studio to crash
  139.     with Overflow Error.

  141. New features in the 2000.07.01 version include:
  142.  o  Added option to disable background texture in Help window.
  143.  o  Rhythm Track editor now works with recorded rhythm tracks.
  144.     In the past, it worked with composed tracks, but not recorded tracks.
  145.  o  Added Record No Rests to MIDI tab of View / Options menu
  146.     When this option is set, the duration of notes is not determined
  147.     by when a note is released, but by which notes are still
  148.     down when a new note is pressed.  This sometimes produces more pleasing
  149.     results when recording a score for display as sheet music.
  150.  o  Fixed problems:
  151.     o  Some items were invisible if the Windows Control Panel Display Scheme
  152.        had a black background.
  153.     o  Sometimes, when a note's property was set to move it to the other clef,
  154.        if it was a dotted note, the dot got drawn to the left of the note.
  155.     o  It was not displaying lyrics for some Karoke (.kar) files.
  156.     o  Changing "Enable HTML help" on the View / Options page sometimes
  157.        caused Anvil Studio to crash.
  158.     o  Items created on the Composer page by Edit / Insert Notation were
  159.        sometimes drawn in the wrong location.
  160.     o  Track names and other properties can now contain umlots and other
  161.        European characters in the ANSI range 128 to 255.
  162.     o  Fixed a rare stem direction bugs and a rare rest-drawing bugs
  163.     o  When inserting notes after an Upbeat, the upbeat got moved.

  165. Fixed problems in the 2000.06.01 version include:
  166.  o  In previous versions, when a new track was created, it would
  167.     have no Program Change message, but default to whatever program that
  168.     synthesizer associated with the track's channel.
  169.     Now, each new track has an explicit ProgramChange(0) event,
  170.     which on most synthesizers, defaults to Accoustic Piano.
  171.  o  Some errors were fixed in the Music Drills accessory.
  172.  
  173. Fixed problems in the 2000.05.06 version include:
  174.  o  Some problems with scrolling by moving cursor with arrow keys.
  175.  o  Several note-display problems.
  176.  
  177. New features in the 2000.05.03 version include:
  178.  o  Added Edit / Insert Notation / Up Beat menu item
  179.  o  Fixed problems
  180.     o  Improved Print-Sheet accessory's Conductor's Score so that
  181.        measure lines and note stems line up for all tracks.
  182.     o  Fixed a header font problem with the Print-Sheet accessory.
  183.     o  Stems line up better between treble and bass clefs.
  184.     o  Had trouble changing time signature or key signature at the start
  185.        of several measures of rests.

  187. Fixed problems in the 2000.04.10 version include:
  188.  o  Triplet-half-notes and triplet-quarter-notes were not being drawn correctly.

  197.  o  Added Note Properties keyboard shortcut to the View / Options menu

  199.     o  Stems of 8th note chords were not being drawn properly since version 2000.01.01
  200.     o  The File / New  and  Track / Create menu items sometimes caused the initial track to be marked as disabled.

  202. Fixed problems in the 2000.04.02 version include:
  203.  o  Add option to not use Windows Swapfile for audio mixing.
  204.  o  On systems with low memory, rewind, record, play buttons were sometimes
  205.     displayed incorrectly.
  206.  o  Songs with more than 4 minutes of sampled rhythms could result in
  207.     a silent rhythm track.

  209. New features in the 2000.03.11 version include:
  210.  o  Right-click keyboard to cause key notes to be displayed.
  211.  o  Allows triplet chords
  212.  o  Added time signatures for 9/8, 3/8, 6/4, 9/4, 4/2
  213.  o  Fixed problems
  214.     o  It was sometimes displaying small rests inaccurately
  215.     o  Fixed a bug that could result in the program ending when using DirectX pluggins
  216.  
  217. New features in the 2000.03.08 version include:
  218.  o  Added ability to print Composer Score if Print-Sheet accessory is installed.
  219.  o  Fixed problems:
  220.     o  Pressing the VU button before the REC button causes audio track Sync problems.
  221.     o  The File / Export MIDI 0 menu item was merging all notes into a single
  222.        MIDI channel.
  223.     o  All versions since and including 2000.02.05 had a bug that caused
  224.        the Volume and Pan controls on the Rhythm Track's Edit Samples dialog
  225.        to not behave properly, sometimes resulting in Overflow errors.
  226.     o  Several other minor bug fixes.
  227.  
  228. New features in the 2000.03.03 version include:
  229.  o  Added View Lyrics menu item, so that an entire track's lyrics
  230.     can be edited at the same time.
  231.  o  Added more entries to the Help menu.
  232.  
  233. New features in the 2000.03.01 version include:
  234.  o  Print Sheet accessory now lets you specify different fonts for each of:
  235.     Header, Footer, Lyrics
  236.  o  Fixed problems:
  237.     o  When copying a measure that had a tie-note to the next measure,
  238.        it was copying the NoteOn event, but not the NoteOff event, resulting
  239.        in a note with infinite sustain.  It no longer copies partial notes.
  240.        The File/Repair Song menu item repaires such songs.
  241.     o  When trying to delete a NoteOn event that had no matching NoteOff
  242.        event, there were situations in which the program could stop responding (i.e. crash).
  243.  
  244. New features in the 2000.02.05 version include:
  245.  o  Added File menu item that exports the current song as a MIDI-Format 0 song.
  246.  o  Fixed problems:
  247.     o  It was possible to get the CopyMe accessory into a state where
  248.        it did not advance when the correct keys were pressed.
  249.     o  It does a better job of adjusting for DirectX latency (delays).
  250.        so that when DirectX introduces latency, instrument and audio tracks stay in sync better, and
  251.        recorded audio tracks stay in sync with played-back audio tracks.
  252.     o  It sometimes generated Overflow errors when playing back with DirectX effects
  253.     o  It sometimes generated Bad Parameter errors when changing pitch of an Audio selection
  254.  
  255. New features in the 2000.02.01 version include:
  256.  o  With Print-Sheet accessory, Lyrics can now be displayed and printed with
  257.     treble-only or bass-only Clefs.
  258.     Also added ability to add a page-number-offset to printed pages, so that
  259.     song can more easily be printed as part of a book.
  260.  o  Fixed problems:
  261.     o Now loads and imports ShortCuts to files properly.

  263. New features in the 2000.01.09 version include:
  264.  o  Added Edit / Insert Notation / Double Bar  and  Text...
  265.     so that you can insert and drag arbitrary text of any font anywhere on the staff.
  266.  o  Fixed problems:
  267.     o  On systems with other programs that installed an invalid ComCtl32.ocx
  268.        Anvil Studio would generate the error message:
  269.          run-time error '339':
  270.          component 'comctl32.ocx' not correctly registered: file is missing or invalid
  271.        Anvil Studio now uses mscomctl.ocx instead of comctl32.ocx
  272.  
  273. New features in the 2000.01.08 version include:
  274.  o  The Mixer page now supports zoomed-out copying and pasting multiple measures from track to track.
  275.     This is especially useful for rhythm tracks and Piano Roll tracks, since they previously only
  276.     allowed single measures to be copied and pasted.
  277.  o  Better support for half-duplex sound cards.
  278.  o  Fixed problems:
  279.     o  If several samples were played at the same time, all samples on a rhythm track
  280.        were sometimes played back with nearly silent volume when the mixed tracks were played.
  281.     o  If 9 or more samples were added to a rhythm track, it could sometimes result in
  282.        a high-pitched pinging sound whenever the 9th or 10th samples were played.
  283.     o  It sometimes displayed "Can't show modeless form" error message.
  284.  
  285. New features in the 2000.01.06 version include:
  286.  o  Faster real-time mixing and more responsive VU meters
  287.  o  Fixed problems:
  288.     o  In version 2000.01.03, right-mouse click on loopback button       caused runtime error.
  289.  
  290. New features in the 2000.01.03 version include:
  291.  o  Added per-track and master playback VU meters
  292.  o  Track / Clone menu item failed for audio tracks when Composer window was visible.
  293.  o  Added new Master Audio Volume control to Mixer page.
  294.  o  Added note properties popup menu to the Rhythm and Piano Roll pages.

  296. New features in the 2000.01.02 version include:
  297.  o  Added a new Note Popup Menu item that makes it easier to shift
  298.     the start time of a note on the staff.
  299.  o  Added ability to set MIDI Ticks per Beat on the Options page.
  300.  o  Sped up editing of long tracks.
  301.  o  Added a decibel side-bar that shows units on the Audio Composer window.
  302.  o  Fixed problems:
  303.     o  Unless a device was explicity set on the Metronome page, attempts
  304.        to start the metronome resulted in an error message.
  305.        It selects a reasonable synthesizer as the default metronome device.
  306.     o  Pro-Mix accessory sometimes generated an overflow runtime error.
  307.     o  On Windows NT with no Internet Explorer installed, it failed with
  308.        runtime error 53.
  309.     o  For some printers, need to set Printer Option 1 on the Options page.

  311. Fixed problems in the 1999.12.02 version include:
  312.  o  Printing was inaccurate since version 1999.11.02 on versions with
  313.     HP Deskjet printers.
  314.  o  Crashed with Runtime Error 6 on systems with dual display monitors.
  315.  o  When Pro-Mix was installed, it sometimes crashed with Runtime Error 6
  316.     when editing a long song.
  317.  o  The Dynamic symbols mf and mp were not displayed properly on the screen

  319. Fixed problems in the 1999.11.07 version include:
  320.  o  Print-Sheet accessory spools more efficiently
  321.  o  Pro-Mix controller window is more accurate when Staff is visible
  322.  
  323. New features in the 1999.11.06 version include:
  324.  o  When playing a song, cursor on staff stays over current note, rather than next note.
  325.  o  When changing note duration, added option to shift following notes.
  326.  o  Metronome is now in sync with song's tempo-map rather than a constant tempo.
  327.  o  Audio tracks display beats and measures based on songs tempo map rather than
  328.     based on constant tempo.
  329.  o  Added MIDI Effects note popup menu to the Pro-Mix accessory, so that MIDI Effects
  330.     can be edited with better resolution for the duration of a note.
  331.     It is particularly useful when you want to bend the pitch of a note from
  332.     its current value to a desired pitch.
  333.  o  Added Tempo Map to Edit menu when the Pro-Mix accessory is installed, so that
  334.     you can "tap" in the song's tempo to be consistent with an existing Audio track.
  335.  o  Fixed problems:
  336.     o  An out-of-stack-space error that sometimes occurred when selecting a range of notes.
  337.     o  A note spacing problem
  338.     o  When Echo MIDI Events was set true, some delays were introduced.
  339.     o  Optimized Multi-Audio 4/8 to eliminate clicks and pops that sometimes
  340.        occurred on slower machines.
  341.     o  For recorded Instrument tracks, it was sometimes displaying notes as dotted
  342.        eight notes which would more accurately be displayed as quarter notes.

  344. New features in the 1999.11.02 version include:
  345.  o  Supports time signature changes in the middle of a rhythm track
  346.     and Piano Roll track, the same as it already does for an Instrument track.
  347.  o  Added Prima Volta and Seconda Volta symbols
  348.  o  Added more answers to frequently asked questions.
  349.  o  Fixed problems:
  350.     o  It was displaying some enharmonics incorrectly.
  351.     o  Fixed some Copy/Paste bugs

  353. New features in the 1999.10.05 version include:
  354.  o  Added symbols for: Trill, D.C., D.S., Segno, Coda, pp, p, mp, mf, f, ff
  355.  o  Added Edit / Paste Special menu item, that allows you control exactly\
  356.     what gets pasted.
  357.  o  Added ability to insert dotted notes in rhythm track and piano roll.
  358.  o  Added button to rhythm track and piano roll that inserts a rest.

  360. New features in the 1999.10.04 version include:
  361.  o  Recognizes SoundFont-compatible sound cards such as SoundBlaster-Live
  362.     and provides access to the card's current instrument settings.
  363.  o  Once again, improved Slur printing for versions with the Print-Sheet
  364.     accessory, and added Fermata symbol.
  365.  
  366. New features in the 1999.10.03 version include:
  367.  o  Added Riff menu items to the Edit menu, giving the ability to define and
  368.     insert Riffs while composing.  It is similar to having several clipboards.
  369.     Some pre-defined rhythm track riffs are included.
  370.  o  Slurs print better
  371.  o  Fixed bug preventing Bank-Select-0 patch libraries from accessing upper banks.
  372.  
  373. Fixed problems in the 1999.09.02 version include:
  374.  o  Fixed some problems related to the Print-Sheet accessory,
  375.     including allowing slurs to get printed properly.

  377. Fixed problems in the 1999.08.08 version include:
  378.  o  Inserting a Staccato note was inserting an additional rest.
  379.  o  Audio playback was getting cut short when DirectX was enabled
  380.     and no DirectX Filters where being used.
  381.  o  Some Music Drills menu items were disabled.

  383. Fixed problems in the 1999.08.07 version include:
  384.  o  Fixed "Reference to released object" error that sometimes occurred
  385.     when inserting a note.
  386.  
  387. New features in the 1999.08.05 version include:
  388.  o  Added Edit / Undo menu item when composing Instrument or Rhythm tracks.
  389.  o  Added Select All to Edit Menu for staff view of Compose page
  390.  o  Added Keyboard Shortcuts to the View/Options page, so you can
  391.     keep your hands on the keyboard more, and on the mouse less
  392.     while composing.
  393.  o  If you select a range of notes on the Compose page and adjust
  394.     the compose page's volume, the volume for all selected notes
  395.     will be set.
  396.  o  To insert a large number of rests in a staff, set the note duration to Whole note
  397.     and double-click on the Insert-rest button.
  398.  o  Added button to hide Controllers on Compose page
  399.  o  Displays proper grid on Rhythm page for 7/8 or 9/8 time.
  400.  o  Dotted notes can now be beamed.
  401.  o  When creating a new track, the new track's Key signature and
  402.     Time signature are the same as the previously active track.
  403.  o  Fixed problems:
  404.     o Fixed several problems related to printing sheet music with lyrics
  405.     o In version 1999.07.14, deleting the last note of a track
  406.       sometimes caused "Runtime error 91".
  407.     o Metronome used to only play accent notes for 4/4 time.  Now, it follows
  408.       the time signature of the active track.
  409.     o Beamed 16th note followed by 8th was displayed as 2 beamed 8th notes.
  410.     o In some key signatures, some notes not-in-key were drawn with sharps and flats
  411.       instead of as natural.
  412.     o When MIDI Setup accessory was installed, it was not automatically
  413.       loading patch libraries since version 1999.06.03.
  414.     o When deleting selection in treble clef or bass clef, but not both,
  415.       if selection included rests, additional rests were getting inserted
  416.       and note durations were getting changed.
  417.     o For versions with Print-Sheet accessories before 1999.08.01:
  418.       o The Lexmark 3200 Series ColorFine, and other printers that do support
  419.         600 dots per inch but not 300 dots per inch only allowed 9 staffs per page
  420.         and not 4 or 6 staffs per page.
  421.       o Runtime error occurred when staffs-per-page field was blank
  422.  
  423. New features in the 1999.07.10 version include:
  424.  o  Added the following to the Note Properties dialog:
  425.     o  Force note to other clef
  426.     o  Display Enharmonic Note
  427.  o  Beamed notes can now include chords.
  428.  o  Fixed problems:
  429.     o  It was sometimes ignoring the first REC button press when
  430.        recording Audio tracks.
  431.     o  A cut/copy/paste timing bugs was fixed.
  432.     o  When a single Audio track was recorded, the File / Export Audio
  433.        menu item would sometimes create an empty file.
  434.     o  Was drawing accidentals incorrectly in a few instances.
  435.  
  436. New features in the 1999.07.08 version include:
  437.  o  Replaced tabs at the bottom of the screen with menu items.
  438.  o  The Record and Mixer pages were combined into a single page.
  439.  o  On screens 800 x 600 pixels and larger, the compose page now
  440.     displays the track list from the Record page.
  441.  o  It is now possible to select notes on only the Treble or Bass clefs,
  442.     as well as notes on both clefs.
  443.  o  On the Compose page for Instrument tracks, you position the
  444.     cursor by pressing the left or right cursor keys.
  445.     You can extend a selection by holding the Shift key while pressing these.
  446.     You can scroll to the start or end of track by holding the Ctrl key
  447.     while pressing these.
  448.  o  Added Beam to Next option to Note properties
  449.     Added "Enable Beam Lines on Compose Page" to Options page
  450.  o  Fixed problems:
  451.     o In versions since 1999.07.01, it failed to work when Internet
  452.       Explorer was not installed.
  453.     o In versions since 1999.07.05, there were some staff-editing bugs.
  454.     o It sometimes said machine was not fast enough for audio recording
  455.     o It was drawing flats at wrong spot for some keys
  456.     o Since version 1999.06.01, Out of memory (error 7) occurred
