  4.    Version 2.80 beta 2

  6.    1. Bugs fixed since last beta:
  7.  
  8.       a) first three file name letters can be lost when compressing 
  9.          to ZIP archive using -ep1 switch;
  10.  
  11.       b) the wrong total unpacked size reported for volumes, when
  12.          "Merge volumes contents" option was switched on;
  13.  
  14.       c) improved processing of truncated GZIP archives;

  18.  
  19.    1. We express our gratitude to Francesco Indrio
  20.       <naradamoon@operamail.com> for designing all new graphics.
  21.  
  22.    2. Added support of Unicode in file names. It may help to avoid
  23.       many problems related with national and some special characters
  24.       in archived file names. The complete support of Unicode
  25.       is available only for Windows NT and Windows 2000 users,
  26.       but this feature still provides some benefits for
  27.       Win9x/WinME users.
  28.  
  29.    3. Dialogs "Info", "SFX", "Comment", "Lock" and "Protect" are
  30.       combined to a single dialog, so you may change several
  31.       archive parameters at once.
  32.  
  33.    4. "Advanced SFX options" button added to SFX dialog allows
  34.       to set additional parameters of SFX module such as extraction
  35.       path, title, window text others.
  36.  
  37.    5. Toolbar:
  38.  
  39.       a) toolbar buttons are reordered;
  40.  
  41.       b) "Add" button is now available also inside of archives;
  42.  
  43.       c) "Extract" and "Lock" are not present on the toolbar
  44.          by default, but you may use "Extract To" and
  45.          "Info/Options/Lock archive" instead. On the other hand
  46.          it is possible to enable these buttons using a new
  47.          "Select buttons..." command in "Settings/General" dialog;
  48.  
  49.       d) "Extract To" command now has the same Alt-E keyboard
  50.          shortcut both inside and outside of archives.
  51.          Shortcut of the "Extract" command is changed to "Alt-W".

  53.    6. Changes in the "Archive name and parameters" dialog:
  54.  
  55.       a) "General/Lock archive" option - lock a created or
  56.          modified archive;
  57.  
  58.       b) "Advanced/Pause after each volume" option - always ask
  59.          confirmation before creating next volume regardless
  60.          of disk type;
  61.  
  62.       c) "Advanced/Recovery record" - specify the size of the recovery
  63.          record as a percentage of the total archive size;
  64.  
  65.       d) "SFX options" - set parameters of the created SFX archive;
  66.  
  67.       e) "Files to add" and "Files to exclude" had been moved from
  68.          "Advanced" to the new "Files" sheet;
  69.  
  70.       f) "Files/File paths" - select a method of storing file paths;
  71.  
  72.       g) "Put each file to separate archive" - put each selected file
  73.          in the current folder and all files in selected subfolders to
  74.          separate archives, each archive contains only one file.
  75.  
  76.    7. "History" menu is removed. The names of a few recently opened
  77.       archives are added to the end of "Files" menu.
  78.  
  79.    8. The new "Import/Export" submenu in "Settings" menu includes
  80.       two commands allowing to export WinRAR settings to Settings.reg
  81.       file and import them later. It may be useful if you wish to
  82.       restore WinRAR settings after re-installing Windows or if is 
  83.       needed to move them to another computer. Settings.reg file is 
  84.       created in the same folder as WinRAR.exe.
  85.  
  86.    9. "Settings/General" dialog:
  87.  
  88.       a) "High priority" option is removed as it usually
  89.          deteriorated overall system performance without any real
  90.          increase of WinRAR performance. But "Low priority" option
  91.          is present and it can be useful if you wish to give more
  92.          processor time to other tasks.
  93.  
  94.       b) New "Keep archives history" option allows to disable
  95.          storing the names of recently opened archives, for example,
  96.          for security reasons.
  97.  
  98.       c) "Always on top" option places WinRAR window above all 
  99.          other programs. You may wish to set it if you frequently
  100.          use WinRAR as a drag and drop target.
  101.  
  102.       d) Use "Toobar/Select buttons..." to customize WinRAR buttons.

  104.   10. "Settings/Compression" dialog:
  105.  
  106.       a) "Volume options" are removed. Now WinRAR always creates
  107.          independent volumes, because they minimize data losses
  108.          in case of archive damage.
  109.  
  110.          Compression profiles introduced in the previous version
  111.          provide better flexibility than the removed "Always put
  112.          recovery record" option. You may specify all required
  113.          settings in a separate profile intended for volumes.
  114.  
  115.       b) "Default folder for extracted files" is moved to this dialog.
  116.          Its behaviour is changed a bit, now it is used both in
  117.          "Extract To" and "Extract" commands as the base part of
  118.          the destination path. The complete path is constructed
  119.          by appending an archive name to the default folder.
  120.  
  121.          "Settings/Extraction" dialog is removed.
  122.          
  123.   11. New options in the "Settings/File list" dialog:
  124.  
  125.       a) "Show archives first" - display archive names above all
  126.          other files in the file list window;
  127.  
  128.       b) "Merge volumes contents" - when you open the first volume,
  129.          read and display contents of all volumes available in the same
  130.          folder as the first volume.
  131.  
  132.       Both options are enabled by default.
  133.  
  134.   12. "Settings/Viewer" dialog:
  135.  
  136.       a) "Reuse existing window" option tells WinRAR to keep
  137.          only one internal viewer window.
  138.  
  139.   13. Changes in the GUI SFX module script language:
  140.  
  141.       a) New "License" command displays a license text before
  142.          extracting files;
  143.  
  144.       b) New "Presetup" command runs the specified program before
  145.          extracting files;
  146.  
  147.       c) New "ExtSign" command informs SFX that additional data
  148.          in free format may be present at the end of archive;
  149.  
  150.       d) script may include more than one Setup command;
  151.  
  152.       e) New optional syntax of "Text" command.
  153.          "Text" and "License" commands now support some HTML tags;
  154.  
  155.       f) "Silent" command may have an optional parameter.
  156.  
  157.   14. SFX module displays the total processed progress bar while
  158.       unpacking files.
  159.  
  160.   15. Archive information dialog:
  161.  
  162.       a) the authenticity information is displayed in a separate
  163.          window, which can be scrolled to view very long AV strings;
  164.  
  165.       b) this dialog now contains the size of maximum continuous damaged
  166.          area, which still can be repaired using the recovery record
  167.          contained in the archive. This number is for the best case,
  168.          a real value can be smaller depending on the type of damage.
  169.  
  170.   16. Command 's-' allows to remove SFX module from SFX archive.
  171.  
  172.   17. Switch '-ag' supports two new format parameters:
  173.  
  174.       a) 'W' - a number of the current week in a year;
  175.  
  176.       b) 'A' - a number of the current day in a week.
  177.          Weeks start with Sunday.
  178.  
  179.   18. New switch '-k' - lock archive.
  180.  
  181.   19. New switch '-vp' - pause after each volume.
  182.  
  183.   20. You may specify the recovery record size as a percentage of the
  184.       total archive size in 'rr' command and '-rr' switch. For 
  185.       example, -rr3%
  186.  
  187.   21. New -ep2 switch - store full file paths when archiving.
  188.  
  189.   22. You may break the archiving operation directly from
  190.       the "Diagnostic messages" dialog using "Break operation" button.
  191.  
  192.   23. Switches -inul and -y can be used in WinRAR command line
  193.       to disable error messages.
  194.  
  195.   24. Switch -sv is removed, now RAR and WinRAR by default create
  196.       independent volumes. You may override it using the new -sd
  197.       switch, but note that it reduces your chances to restore
  198.       a part of data in case of archive damage.
  199.  
  200.   25. In case of write error WinRAR asks for "Retry/Abort"
  201.       confirmation instead of immediate aborting as before, so a user
  202.       has a possibility to free some space on the destination disk.

  204.   26. The following keyboard shortcuts are now supported by WinRAR:
  205.  
  206.       a) F2 - rename a file under the cursor. It is supported
  207.          only outside archives;
  208.  
  209.       b) F4 - open the address list.
  210.  
  211.   27. RCVT archive converter is removed from WinRAR distributive.
  212.       It is available in "RAR extras" section of www.rarsoft.com.
  213.  
  214.   28. Note to users willing to translate WinRAR to their native
  215.       language: please look at rarlng.rar archive in "RAR extras"
  216.       section of www.rarsoft.com. Now it is possible to localize
  217.       WinRAR very easily simply by editing plain text files.

  222.    1. Corrected a few bugs including the following Windows 2000
  223.       compatibility issues:
  224.  
  225.       a) "New" command of Explorer context menu created zero length
  226.          archives, which cannot be opened by WinRAR;
  227.  
  228.       b) archiving a large number of files (more than 300-400)
  229.          using context menu did not work.

  232.    Version 2.70
  233.  
  234.    1. Both compression and speed have been improved for RAR archives.
  235.       My thanks to Alexander Khoroshev, who, once again, provided
  236.       invaluable assistance to improve this new version.
  237.  
  238.    2. In previous versions it was necessary to have external archivers
  239.       to unpack CAB, ARJ and LZH files. These are now supported internally
  240.       by WinRAR, you no longer need to have other programs to extract
  241.       from these archives.
  242.  
  243.    3. Internal (extraction only) support has been added for TAR,
  244.       GZ, ACE and UUE archives.
  245.  
  246.    4. RAR and WinRAR are now able to store NTFS data streams.
  247.       It is especially important under Windows 2000, which uses
  248.       streams to keep some file dependent information such as
  249.       file descriptions.
  250.  
  251.       Use switch -os to enable the storing of streams from
  252.       the command line or set the option "Save file streams"
  253.       in the "Archive name and parameters" dialog.
  254.  
  255.       This feature is supported only for RAR archives.
  256.  
  257.    5. "Archive name and parameters" dialog has been split into four
  258.       sections: general options, advanced options, backup options
  259.       and archive comment. Now it is possible to set archive password
  260.       or comment directly from this dialog.
  261.  
  262.    6. You may save compression options to compression profiles
  263.       to quickly restore them later, so you may create profiles
  264.       for your typical archiving operations. Read the topic
  265.       "Compression profiles" in the "Configuration settings" chapter
  266.       for detailed information.
  267.  
  268.    7. RAR and WinRAR are now able to store NTFS file owner, group, access
  269.       control and audit information under Windows NT. Note: you need to
  270.       have the necessary privileges in order to use this facility.
  271.       Use switch -ow to enable the storing and extraction of this
  272.       information from the command line or set the option "Save security
  273.       data" in the "Archive name and parameters" dialog.
  274.  
  275.       This feature is supported for both RAR and ZIP archives.
  276.  
  277.    8. Large disk folders are now read significantly faster in WinRAR.
  278.  
  279.    9. Total progress bar is displayed when testing or extracting
  280.       from a single RAR archive (except volumes) or group of archives.
  281.  
  282.   10. New command line switches -to<time> and -tn<time> allow to
  283.       process files older or newer than specified time. This feature
  284.       is also available in the "Backup options" of the "Archive name
  285.       and parameters" dialog.
  286.  
  287.   11. New switch -ibck allows to run WinRAR minimized to tray, when
  288.       archiving or extracting files from the command line.
  289.  
  290.   12. Switch -rr and command RR are not limited to 8 recovery sectors.
  291.       Now the recovery record may contain up to 4096 sectors.
  292.  
  293.       If the sectors number is not specified, the size of the recovery
  294.       information is about 1.2% of the total archive size, this usually
  295.       allows the recovery of up to 0.7% of continuously damaged data 
  296.       of the total archive size.
  297.  
  298.       Note that recovery records larger than 8 sectors cannot be used
  299.       by previous RAR versions.
  300.  
  301.   13. "Convert to SFX" command is now supported also for ZIP archives
  302.       which are already in SFX format. This can be useful, if you wish
  303.       to replace a particular SFX module.
  304.  
  305.   14. "Open archive" item is added to "Files" menu.
  306.  
  307.   15. Folder time stamps are restored, when unpacking an archive
  308.       under Windows NT.
  309.  
  310.   16. The default value of dictionary size is changed to 1024KB.
  311.  
  312.   17. It is possible to specify the path to put a repaired archive
  313.       in WinRAR.
  314.  
  315.   18. Console RAR now supports wildcards in the archive name
  316.       also in 'RR' command.
  317.  
  318.   19. New switch -idp for console RAR disables displaying of
  319.       the percentage indicator. May be useful when redirecting RAR output
  320.       to a file.
