  10.  This program automatically updates Norton AntiVirus with the latest 
  11.  virus definitions. It automatically searches for Norton AntiVirus on 
  12.  your computer and updates the necessary files.

  40. Installation Files and Disk Sets
  41. =====================================================================

  43.  The Intelligent Updater installation disks or CD contains several  
  44.  executable files. The filenames change from week to week. They show 
  45.  the month (mm) and day (dd) that the definitions were released.
  46.

  92.                   This is a large file for administrators who update 
  93.                   multiple versions of Norton AntiVirus. For more
  94.                   information, refer to the .txt files that come 
  95.                   with this program. It is not available on floppy 
  96.                   disk.

  99.                   for Norton AntiVirus for NT Server, DEC Alpha 
  100.                   version.

  104. I. Norton AntiVirus 4.0, 5.0, & 2000 for Windows 95/98
  105. =====================================================================
  106.  
  107.  1. Run the file mmddI32.EXE (or mmddI321.EXE if using the
  108.     multi-file, floppy disk set). The mmdd represents the date of the
  109.     definition set. For example, the filename would be 1231I32.EXE
  110.     for the December 31 definition set.
  111.  2. Follow the instructions on the screen.

  115. II. Norton AntiVirus 3.0 and 4.0 for DOS / Windows 3.x
  116. =====================================================================
  117.  
  118.  IMPORTANT! Check the Norton AntiVirus version first
  119.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  120.  Check the date of the Norton AntiVirus executable files (NAV.EXE, 
  121.  NAVW.EXE) to see if they are earlier than June 1, 1996. If they are, 
  122.  update them with the UPDATEME.EXE patch. 
  123.  
  124.  This patch is available on the Symantec FTP site 
  125.  (ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/...), the Symantec  Web site 
  126.  (http://www.symantec.com/nav/index_updates.html), 
  127.  CompuServe, or America Online. You can also call Customer Service 
  128.  at (800) 441-7234 to order a disk set.
  129.  
  130.  These new virus definitions are not compatible with older versions 
  131.  of Norton AntiVirus, and may cause them to report false virus 
  132.  detections. 
  133.  
  134.  Download or copy the patch file to a temporary directory and run it 
  135.  to extract the necessary files. Then follow the directions in the 
  136.  READ.ME file. This patch contains the April 1997 virus definition 
  137.  set. After applying this patch, you must update the virus definition 
  138.  set.
  139.  
  140.  Updating NAV 3.0/4.0 virus definition files using Windows 3.x
  141.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  142.  1. Run the file mmddI16.EXE (or mmddI161.EXE if using the multi-file
  143.     floppy disk set). The mmdd represents the date of the definition 
  144.     set. For example, the filename would be 1231I16.EXE for the 
  145.     December 31 definition set. 
  146.  2. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  147.  3. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive before you reboot
  148.     your computer to activate the new virus definitions and rebuild 
  149.     critical files.
  150.  4. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new 
  151.     definitions.
  152.  
  153.  Updating NAV 3.0/4.0 virus definition files using DOS
  154.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  155.  1. If you are running Windows, exit to DOS. To do this, select Exit
  156.     from the File menu.
  157.  2. Make sure you have a temporary directory on your system that you 
  158.     can use to unload the virus definitions. Set this directory in 
  159.     DOS using the SET command. For example, type SET TEMP=C:\TEMP if 
  160.     the temporary directory is C:\TEMP. 
  161.  3. Run the file mmddI16.EXE (or mmddI161.EXE if using the multi-file
  162.     floppy disk set). The mmdd represents the date of the definition 
  163.     set. For example, the filename would be 1231I16.EXE for the 
  164.     December 31 definition set. 
  165.  4. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  166.  5. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive before you reboot
  167.     your computer to activate the new virus definitions and rebuild 
  168.     critical files.
  169.  6. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new 
  170.     definitions.

  172.  Troubleshooting
  173.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  174.  If the VIRSCAN.ZIP files are not deleted after a failed or 
  175.  cancelled attempt at updating the virus definitions, they can cause 
  176.  errors when running the Intelligent Updater program. To prevent 
  177.  these types of errors, make sure that the temporary directory is 
  178.  empty before starting the update.
  179.

  182. III. NT Tools and NT Scanner
  183. =====================================================================
  184.  
  185.  1. Run the file mmddI16.EXE (or mmddI161.EXE if using the multi-file
  186.     floppy disk set). The mmdd represents the date of the definition 
  187.     set. For example, the filename would be 1231I16.EXE for the 
  188.     December 31 definition set. 
  189.  2. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  190.  3. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive before you reboot
  191.     your computer to activate the new virus definitions and rebuild 
  192.     critical files.
  193.  4. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new 
  194.     definitions.

  198. IV. Norton AntiVirus 4.0 & 5.0 for Windows NT
  199. =====================================================================
  200.  
  201.  1. Run the file mmddI32.EXE (or mmddI321.EXE if using the multi-file
  202.     floppy disk set). The mmdd represents the date of the definition 
  203.     set. For example, the filename would be 1231I32.EXE for the 
  204.     December 31 definition set. 
  205.  2. Follow the instructions on the screen.

  209. V. Norton AntiVirus 4.0 for NetWare
  210. =====================================================================
  211.  
  212.  1. On a workstation connected to the network, map a drive letter to 
  213.     the volume and directory where Norton AntiVirus for Netware is 
  214.     installed. You must have read and write access to the mapped 
  215.     drive.
  216.  2. Disable the Norton AntiVirus for NetWare NLM. To do this, select
  217.     DISABLE NLM from the Tools menu in the Norton AntiVirus for 
  218.     NetWare Windows configuration window. Or, you can press F3 at the 
  219.     NAVNLM server console screen.
  220.  4. At a DOS prompt, change to the directory that contains the 
  221.     Intelligent Updater file. Type mmddN16.EXE [path] (or 
  222.     mmddN161.EXE [path] if you are updating from a floppy disk) where 
  223.     the [path] is the location you mapped in step 1. The mmdd 
  224.     represents the date of the definition set. For example, the 
  225.     filename would be 1231I16.EXE for the December 31 definition set.
  226.  5. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  227.  6. Enable the Norton AntiVirus for NetWare NLM. Choose ENABLE NLM 
  228.     from the Tools menu in the Norton AntiVirus for NetWare Windows 
  229.     configuration window. Or, press F2 at the NAVNLM server console 
  230.     screen.
  231.  7. If you created a temporary drive mapping, delete it.
  232.  
  233. =====================================================================
  234. VI. Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Lotus Notes/Domino (AS400)
  235. =====================================================================
  236.  1. Download the file as400.ZIP to a temporary location on a PC that is
  237.     able to connect to the AS400 server.
  238.  2. Unzip this file to a temporary location on the PC.
  239.  3. From the temporary location on the PC, use FTP to connect to the
  240.     AS400 server.  Log in as QSECOFR, or a user that has *ALLOBJ 
  241.     authority.
  242.  4. Change to Binary transfer mode. 
  243.  5. Put the files into the Incoming directory: 
  244.      /SYMANTEC/VIRUSDEFS/INCOMING
  245.  6. Use the command:
  246.      CHGOWN OBJ('/SYMANTEC/VIRUSDEFS/INCOMING/*') NEWOWN(QNOTES) 
  247.     to change the owner of all the files to QNOTES.
  248.  7. Norton AntiVirus will automatically begin using the new definitions 
  249.     within 10 minutes.
  250.  
  251. =====================================================================
  252. VII. Norton AntiVirus Network Manager
  253. =====================================================================
  254.  
  255.  IMPORTANT! Check the Norton AntiVirus version first
  256.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  257.  Check the date of the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager executable 
  258.  file (NAVNET.EXE) to see if it is earlier than June 1, 1996. If it 
  259.  is, you must update it with the UPDATEME.EXE patch before installing 
  260.  these definitions. These new virus definitions are not compatible 
  261.  with older versions of Norton AntiVirus, and may cause it to report 
  262.  false virus detections. 
  263.  
  264.  This patch is available on the Symantec FTP site

  270.  Download or copy the UPDATEME.EXE patch file to a temporary 
  271.  directory. The network files must exist in your local directory or 
  272.  the UPDATEME.EXE patch will not extract the network files. Copy 
  273.  NAVNET.EXE and NAVNETW.EXE to your local NAV directory. Then run 
  274.  UPDATEME.EXE to extract the files. The complete directions are 
  275.  explained in the READ.ME file. 
  276.  
  277.  After updating Norton AntiVirus Network Manager, recreate your .NNS 
  278.  files using the new _DEFAULT.NNS as a template. For more information 
  279.  on recreating .NNS files, order FaxBack #913024 from our free 
  280.  FaxBack service at (541) 984-2490, option 2.
  281.  
  282.  The NAV 3.11 patch contains the April 1997 virus definition set. You
  283.  must apply the latest virus definition set update after completing
  284.  the program update.
  285.  
  286.  Updating Norton AntiVirus Network Manager virus definitions
  287.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  288.  1. On a workstation connected to the network, map a drive letter to 
  289.     the volume and directory where Norton AntiVirus Network Manager
  290.     is installed. You must have read and write access to the mapped 
  291.     drive.

  299.  4. Follow the instructions on screen.
  300.  5. Start Norton AntiVirus from the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager
  301.     directory and scan the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager directory 
  302.     to activate the new virus definitions and rebuild critical files. 
  303.     To do this, type NAV from the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager 
  304.     directory.
  305.  
  306.  
  307. =====================================================================
  308. VIII. Norton AntiVirus Network Manager for Win95 and WinNT
  309. =====================================================================
  310.  
  311.  Installing the definitions for Network Manager involves three steps.
  312.    1. Find the directory where virus definitions are stored.
  313.    2. Copy the appropriate Intelligent Updater program to that 
  314.       directory.
  315.    3. Run the Intelligent Updater program using the /dump command to 
  316.       extract the appropriate files.
  317.  
  318.  Locating the Definitions Directory
  319.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  320.  1. Find the .NNS file that Norton AntiVirus uses to distribute 
  321.     files. To find out which .NNS file the network uses, check the 
  322.     network login script. If it uses a customized .NNS file, the 
  323.     login script will specify the location of that file. If not, 
  324.     search the login script for the location of the NAVCHECK.EXE and 
  325.     NAV32UP.EXE distribution files. The default .NNS file 
  326.     (_DEFLT32.NNS) will be in the directory containing NAVCHECK.EXE 
  327.     and NAV32UP.EXE.
  328.  2. Look in the .NNS file for the parameter that points to the virus 
  329.     definitions directory. 
  330.       * In NavNet32 v2.0, the parameter "NAVDefDir" points to 
  331.         the definitions. 
  332.       * In NavNet32 v4.x, the parameter "NAVDefDir95" points to the 
  333.         Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95 definitions. The parameter 
  334.         "NAVDefDirNTWKS" points to the Norton AntiVirus for NT 
  335.         workstation definitions, and "NAVDefDirNTSRV" points to the 
  336.         Norton AntiVirus for NT server definitions.
  337.  3. Note the definitions directory to be updated. 
  338.  
  339.  Updating Definitions for Norton AntiVirus 4.0 
  340.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  341.  1. Map a drive letter to the network volume and directory containing 
  342.     the definitions to be updated. You must have WRITE access to the 
  343.     mapped drive.
  344.  2. Copy (do not Move) the mmddI32.EXE file to the mapped network 
  345.     definitions directory. The mmdd represents the date of the    
  346.     definition set. For example, the filename would be 1231I32.EXE 
  347.     for the December 31 definition set.
  348.  3. Open a command line session (DOS box) and change to the mapped 
  349.     drive containing the older definitions and the new Intelligent 
  350.     Updater program.
  351.  4. To update definitions type mmddI32 /DUMP 
  352.  5. Delete mmddI32.EXE from the definitions directory.
  353.  
  354.  
  355. =====================================================================
  356. IX. Norton System Center
  357. =====================================================================
  358.  
  359.  See the Norton System Center documentation for instructions on 
  360.  distributing virus definitions with Central LiveUpdate. To 
  361.  distribute virus definition updates without Central LiveUpdate:
  362.  
  363.  1. Download the latest version of Intelligent Updater (v4.0).
  364.  
  365.  2. Copy Intelligent Updater to the definitions folder of your NSC 
  366.     installation. By default the location is the 
  367.     \NSC Repository\Products\NAV\Defs\Intel or Alpha folder.
  368.  
  369.  3. To avoid changing the job every time you update the definitions, 
  370.     rename the Intelligent Updater file as NEWDEFS.EXE and set the 
  371.     job to run this file. Otherwise you will always have to modify 
  372.     the job to use the correct file name. 
  373.  
  374.  4. Start Norton System Center and run your virus definitions rollout 
  375.     job. For more information on setting up NSC jobs, see your NSC
  376.     documentation.
  377.  
  378.  Whenever you want to distribute updated virus definitions, download 
  379.  a new Intelligent Updater, copy it to the source distribution 
  380.  folder, rename it NEWDEFS.EXE, and rerun the job. 
  381.

  384. X. Norton AntiVirus for NT Server, DEC Alpha version
  385. =====================================================================
  386.  
  387. 1. Download the file mmddA32.ZIP.
  388. 2. Unzip this file into the Incoming directory: 
  389.    \Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\VirusDefs\Incoming 
  390. 3. Norton AntiVirus will automatically begin using the new 
  391.    definitions.

  394. XI. Norton AntiVirus for OS/2
  395. =====================================================================
  396.  
  397. 1. Download the file mmddO32.ZIP.
  398. 2. Unzip this file into the Incoming directory: 
  399.    \SYMANTEC\COMMON\SHARED\VIRUSDEFS\INCOMING
  400. 3. Norton AntiVirus will automatically begin using the new 
  401.    definitions.

  404. XII. Norton AntiVirus Internet Email Gateways
  405. =====================================================================
  406.  IMPORTANT! It is highly recommended that you update this product
  407.  With Live Update. If you must use the Intelligent updater then follow
  408.  these instructions carefully.
  409.  
  410. 1. Go to the Start menu and select "settings\control panel".
  411.    Select "services". Find "NAV for Internet Email Gateways" in the
  412.    service list and select it, then select the "stop" button. Select
  413.    "yes" when asked to confirm.
  414. 2. From a command prompt type "mmddX86.EXE /ieg". Remember the
  415.    the "mmdd" represents the date of the definition set so it will
  416.    change. For example, the filename would be 1231X86.EXE
  417.    for the December 31 definition set.
  418. 3. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  419. 4. When Intelligent Updater finishes installing the definitions,
  420.    Select the "start" button to start the service again.
  421.

  423. XIII. Norton AntiVirus Firewalls
  424. =====================================================================
  425.  IMPORTANT! It is highly recommended that you update this product
  426.  With Live Update. If you must use the Intelligent updater then follow
  427.  these instructions carefully.
  428.  
  429. 1. Go to the Start menu and select "settings\control panel".
  430.    Select "services". Find "NAV for Firewalls" in the
  431.    service list and select it, then select the "stop" button. Select
  432.    "yes" when asked to confirm.
  433. 2. From a command prompt type "mmddX86.EXE /fw". Remember the
  434.    the "mmdd" represents the date of the definition set so it will
  435.    change. For example, the filename would be 1231X86.EXE
  436. 3. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  437. 4. When Intelligent Updater finishes installing the definitions,
  438.    Select the "start" button to start the service again.

  441. XIV. Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition 6.0/7.0
  442. =====================================================================
  443.  
  444. 1. Run the file mmddX86.EXE.  The mmdd represents the date of 
  445.    the definition set. For example, the filename would be 
  446.    1231X86.EXE for December 31 definition set.
  447.  
  448. 2. A message dialog box will appear momentarily on the screen 
  449.    indicating the NAV application is updating the virus definition
  450.    set.  Update of the virus definition is done automatically after 
  451.    executing the file mmddX86.EXE.
  452.  
  453. 3. The NAV application will normally display the activated virus 
  454.    definition date on the initial NAV display with "Date:mm/dd/yyyy". 
  455.    Where mm/dd/yyyy represents the date of the virus definition set. 
  456.    For example, 12/31/2000 for December 31, 2000 definition set. 
  457.

  459. XV. Installing Virus Definition Files Manually
  460. =====================================================================
  461.  
  462.  If you do not want Intelligent Updater to install the new virus
  463.  definitions for you automatically, you can use the /DUMP command to
  464.  extract the virus definition files, then copy the appropriate files
  465.  to the virus definitions folder. 
  466.  
  467.  Installing Virus Definition Files Manually
  468.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  469.  1. Copy the Intelligent Updater program (mmddI16.EXE, mmddI161.EXE,
  470.     mmddI32.EXE, or mmddN16.EXE) to an empty, temporary folder.
  471.  
  472.  2. Launch the Intelligent Updater program using the /DUMP command. 
  473.     This will extract all the virus definitions to the folder. For 
  474.     example, type mmddI32.EXE /DUMP to extract the files. The mmdd 
  475.     represents the date of the definition set. For example, the 
  476.     filename would be 1231I32.EXE for the December 31 definition set.
  477.  
  478.  3. Copy the files to the virus definition folder. If you are using 
  479.     Norton AntiVirus 4.0 or 5.0 for Windows 95 / Windows NT Server &
  480.     Workstation, copy the files to this location:
  481.     C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\VirusDefs\Incoming\
  482.  
  483.     NOTE: Copy the file ZDONE.DAT last. This file signals Norton
  484.     AntiVirus that the definition set has been completely loaded. If
  485.     it is not loaded last, it may cause errors.
  486.  
  487.  4. Refer to the Intelligent Updater File List below for information
  488.     on which files to copy into the Norton AntiVirus folder.
