  44. PKZIP Explorer operates within Microsoft Windows Explorer 
  45. providing an integrated interface for compressing, 
  46. extracting, and managing your compressed data files.  
  47. PKZIP Explorer is the latest version of PKZIP, the popular
  48. data compression program from PKWARE, Inc. PKZIP is a powerful 
  49. utility that provides many functions for data compression, 
  50. file archival, management, and distribution. PKZIP has led 
  51. the way in industry standard .ZIP format compression since 
  52. 1989, when PKWARE introduced the .ZIP file format.

  55. INSTALLATION
  56. ------------

  58. PKZIP Explorer is installed using the Microsoft Windows
  59. Installer.  This installation process makes installing 
  60. and configuring PKZIP Explorer easy and avoids common 
  61. conflicts that can arise when installing new software.  
  62.  
  63. If you have purchased a REGISTERED copy of this software, it is 
  64. distributed either on CD-ROM or as an electronic delivery file
  65. available for downloading from the Internet.  If you have a 
  66. SHAREWARE copy of this software, it will be distributed using
  67. a PKSFX(R) self-extracting file.
  68.  
  69. Installing from CD-ROM:
  70.  
  71. If you are installing from CD-ROM, simply insert the CD into
  72. your drive.  The Autorun feature will automatically start the
  73. setup program.  If the Autorun feature is not enabled on your 
  74. system, you can run SETUP.EXE directly from the CD.  After the 
  75. setup program has started, follow the instructions provided 
  76. on-screen to complete the installation.

  79. Installing from a PKSFX file:
  80.  
  81. If you are installing a version of the software downloaded from
  82. the Internet (i.e. either a REGISTERED version purchased
  83. online, or a SHAREWARE copy downloaded from an Internet site such
  84. as www.pkware.com) you will receive a PKSFX self-extracting file.
  85. The Windows Installer is packaged inside the PKSFX file.  
  86. Run the PKSFX file to start the installation.  It will extract 
  87. the files needed to install the software and it will automatically
  88. start the setup program.  Follow the instructions provided by 
  89. the setup program to complete the installation.

  91. When you run the PKSFX file, the files it contains are extracted
  92. to an intermediate folder and the installation continues from
  93. this location.  Once PKZIP Explorer is installed and working
  94. properly on your system, you may delete this intermediate folder
  95. to free up disk space.  If you delete this intermediate folder
  96. but later want to reinstall the product, you will need to re-run
  97. the PKSFX file.

  99. We encourage you to make a backup of your PKSFX file, or of the
  100. contents of the intermediate folder to ensure you will be able
  101. to reinstall this product if you ever need to in the future.

  105. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

  108. PKZIP Explorer is intended for use on Microsoft Windows 95,
  109. Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows NT 4.0, and Windows 2000 systems.
  110. Systems running Windows 95 or NT 4.0 systems require Microsoft 
  111. Internet Explorer 4.0 or greater. PKZIP utilizes several system 
  112. (e.g. security) files installed in conjunction with 
  113. Internet Explorer. Therefore, Internet Explorer (version 4.0
  114. or greater) must reside on your system prior to installing
  115. PKZIP Explorer.

  117. If you plan to use the Digital Signature feature available with
  118. PKZIP Explorer, you must also obtain and install a valid 
  119. Digital Certificate onto your system prior to using this feature.

  129. The files that comprise the REGISTERED version of PKZIP  
  130. Explorer are not for distribution.  Consult the end-user
  131. license agreement that came with your copy of this program
  132. for information on the terms and conditions of use.

  134. SHAREWARE versions of PKZIP Explorer are available for 
  135. distribution.  However, if you plan to distribute the 
  136. SHAREWARE version of PKZIP Explorer to friends, associates, 
  137. or to an online service, you must distribute the entire file 
  138. set as originally received.  Do not distribute individual files.

  200. PKZIP ATTACHMENTS
  201. ------------------

  203. Included with this version of PKZIP Explorer is a program
  204. called PKZIP Attachments.  This new program will integrate
  205. the data compression features of PKZIP Explorer directly into
  206. the message editor of Microsoft Outlook 2000.  Whenever you
  207. send an email message with one or more attachments, those
  208. attachments can be automatically compressed into a .ZIP 
  209. file.  This can help save storage space and reduce transfer 
  210. time for your messages with attachments.  Since PKZIP 
  211. Attachments uses the PKZIP Explorer engine, it can compress 
  212. your attachments using many of the features available in PKZIP 
  213. Explorer such as password protection and Digital Signatures.
  214. These will to help secure and authenticate your message 
  215. attachments.

  218. you install PKZIP Explorer if you are using Outlook 2000.
