  1. ÇCHKDSK won't run with Magic Folders installed.  We disable ChkDsk because it 
  2. can delete all your invisible files.  (You can temporarily re-enable it 
  3. from the "Utilities" menu.)  For more information select "Help" at the 
  4. main screen. 
  5.  
  6. ChkDsk is the only program we've tested that causes a problem.  The 
  7. following have been tested and work fine with Magic Folders: SCANDISK, 
  8. DEFRAG, Norton Disk Doctor, and Norton Speed Disk.  
  9.  
  10. Do you use any other disk fix or defragmenting utilities not listed here? 
  11. üWith tens of thousands of users no one's reported problems with any disk 
  12. utility other than CHKDSK.  However, you should still test your disk fix 
  13. and/or defragmenting utilities to see if they're safe to use with 
  14. Encrypted Magic Folders.  To do so, run them when your magic folders are 
  15. visible and invisible.  DO NOT FIX ANY REPORTED ERRORS.  If more errors 
  16. are reported when your folders are invisible than when they're visible 
  17. then do one of the following: 
  18.  
  19. 1.  Remove the utilities (so you can't use them) or remove Magic Folders.
  20.  
  21. 2.  Use only one account in Magic Folders (just use the Master Account 
  22. already created) and move the offending utility into one of your 
  23. invisible folders.  That way it can only be run when all folders and 
  24. files are visible, and thereby safe.

  29. âTo register via modem from outside the US or Canada please enter those 
  30. numbers that must be dialed to place a direct call to the United States.  
  31. These numbers often include a prefix to place an international call 
  32. followed by the country code for the United States.  If you want to put 
  33. delays in your prefix dialing string, use a comma for every two second 
  34. delay needed.

  36. Note: A successful registration may not be possible if a good modem 
  37. connection cannot be made due to line quality or delays.  In addition, 
  38. international calling rates can be expensive, but in most cases will 
  39. still be less than the $4 mailing surcharge added to overseas orders that 
  40. are registered by other means.

  43. When you registered you received either a 16 digit registration key or a 
  44. file called MFD.SYS which tells Magic Folders you're a registered user.  
  45. Both are customized with your personal information (See "Registered 
  46. to..." in the "Registration" Menu) and licensed for your use only.  
  47. Giving either one to others is illegal. 
  48.  
  49. Make a backup copy of your registration key or MFD.SYS as they are the 
  50. key to your registration.  For those who got MFD.SYS remember: as long as 
  51. it's in the same directory as MAGIC.EXE Magic Folders will be registered. 
  52.  
  53. One registration benefit is free updates for six months, provided you 
  54. download them.  You can get the latest version at our WEB site: 
  55. "www.pc-magic.com"   Just download the latest version and extract it 
  56. into the directory where the current version is located.  
  57.  
  58. Note:  If you charged your registration to your credit card the charge 
  59. will be to RSE Software.  Thank you for your support.
  60. àOne or more of the files needed to restore the last registered version 
  61. are missing.  If you got a disk from us when you registered (modem 
  62. registrants don't unless they request one) then you can re-install that 
  63. version.

  65. A better option is to visit our WEB page at: "pc-magic.com/", go to 
  66. the "Previous versions" page and click on the latest version created 
  67. within six months of your registration.
  68. åYou can have up to 5 Magic Folder accounts.  Each account can create 
  69. their own list of magic folders that are invisible to all other 
  70. accounts.  However, only your "Master" account can un-install Magic 
  71. Folders and create new accounts.

  73. If multiple accounts are created, no account has access to all the hidden 
  74. folders.  Therefore you shouldn't create multiple accounts if you're 
  75. hiding an "un-safe" disk utility.  Having multiple accounts also makes 
  76. backups tougher because no account has complete access to all hidden 
  77. folders.  See "Multiple Accounts" in "Help" for more important 
  78. information.

  107. ëAt this time we will create a "KeyDisk".  This disk will let you get 
  108. into Magic Folders should you forget your password.  It also lets you 
  109. disable Magic Folders from DOS should you not be able to use the 
  110. "Uninstall" feature within Magic Folders.

  112. To create your KeyDisk put a blank, formatted disk in your floppy drive.
  113.  
  114. What drive is your KeyDisk in?
  115. èYour KeyDisk has been created.  Remove your KeyDisk now and write the 
  116. following on its label:

  118. "Magic Folder KeyDisk - See README.TXT if you forget password or need to 
  119. uninstall and can't run Magic Folders."

  126. If you forget your password insert this KeyDisk, run Magic Folders and 
  127.  
  128. attempt to enter your password three times.  After the third attempt 
  129.  
  130. Magic Folders will use this disk as a key to let you in.  This only lets 
  131.  
  132. you into the Master Account.  If you forget the password to another 
  133.  
  134. account you will have to un-install Magic Folders and re-install it again 
  135.  
  136. to gain access to all the hidden folders.

  139. Can't run Magic Folders?
  140.  
  141. If you need to uninstall Magic Folders and you can't use the Un-install 
  142.  
  143. feature inside Magic Folders then boot from a system floppy, or if Win95, 
  144.  
  145. safe boot to "Safe Command Prompt Only".  Then insert this disk into 
  146.  
  147. drive A:.  At the DOS prompt enter "A:", and then enter "DISABLE".
  148.  
  149. îYou can use Magic Folders to restrict access to your computer.  With 
  150. "AutoStart" installed Magic Folders asks you for your password whenever 
  151. your computer boots.  Enter your password and your magic folders will 
  152. automatically become visible.  How Magic Folders handles incorrect 
  153. passwords depends on which of the following two options you choose.  
  154. Select "Cancel" if you don't wish to install "AutoStart". 
  155.  
  156. ìIt appears you have 32 bit File Access for Windows 3.11 activated.  
  157. Magic Folders will not work if 32 bit File Access is on.  You can check 
  158. by going into Control Panel, clicking "Enhanced", then "Virtual Memory" 
  159. and checking the "Disk Status" section. 
  160.

  162. ÄMagic Folders didn't load correctly.  MF.EXE (or whatever you renamed it 
  163. during installation) needs to be run from within your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.  
  164. Make sure the "LH pathname\MF.EXE" statement (where "pathname" is the 
  165. directory where MF.EXE is located) is in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file and that 
  166. it directly proceeds the line that runs Windows.  If it is and things 
  167. still don't work, please send e-mail to support@pc-magic.com and 
  168. reference Err 97. 
  169. ÅCHKDSK has been temporarily enabled.  You can copy, move, delete, or use 
  170. it.  However, keep in mind that using CHKDSK with Magic Folders can 
  171. delete any folders that are hidden at the time you use CHKDSK including 
  172. the folder containing your password information.  See "Help" for details. 
  173.  
  174. CHKDSK access will stay enabled until you re-boot, turn off your 
  175. computer, or run Magic Folders.
  176. ÉæYou might want to check out Encrypted Magic Folders which provides the 
  177. hidden folder functions of Magic Folders *PLUS* automatic and transparent 
  178. encryption of your hidden folders and files.  You can get Encrypted Magic

  184. ù"AutoStart" lets you use Magic Folders to restrict access to your computer.  
  185.  
  186. With "AutoStart" enabled Magic Folders asks you for your password 
  187. whenever your computer boots.  Enter your password and your magic folders 
  188. will automatically become visible.  Those without the correct password 
  189. can either be denied all access to the computer or just denied access to 
  190. your hidden folders.  The choice is yours. 
  191.  
  192. ÿCHKDSK won't run with Magic Folders installed.  We disable 
  193. ChkDsk because it can delete all your invisible files including the file 
  194. containing your password data.  If this option is checked then CHKDSK 
  195. protection is in place and you cannot use CHKDSK. 
  196.  
  197. There may be situations where you want to be able to use CHKDSK.  For 
  198. example, Win95 requires access to CHKDSK when creating an Emergency 
  199. access disk.  To allow CHKDSK access then un-select this option.  CHKDSK 
  200. access will only be in effect until you restart your computer or use 
  201. Magic Folders again.Ö 
  202. ÜNorton's NAVDX program is being loaded in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.  It 
  203. has been known to lock up some computers during the boot process when 
  204. used with Magic Folders.  
  205.  
  206. You have a couple of options.  We suggest you let us remove NAVDX from 
  207. the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.  All NAVDX does is provide a small amount of 
  208. protection between when DOS loads and Windows starts loading.  Norton 
  209. doesn't even install it by default in later versions.  
  210.  
  211. Another option is to update to the latest version of NAVDX as it appears 
  212. not to have the problem.  However, we highly suggest you let us remove it 
  213. from your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. 
  214.  
  215. Would you like us to disable the loading of NAVDX.EXE in your 
  216. AUTOEXEC.BAT file?

  219. When you registered you received a file called MFD.SYS which tells Magic 
  220. Folders you're a registered user.  MFD.SYS has been customized with your 
  221. personal information and is for your use only.  Giving MFD.SYS to others 
  222. is illegal.

  224. You should backup MFD.SYS as there's a $5 charge if we need to replace 
  225. it.  Would you like to back it up to your KeyDisk?
  226.  
  227. £This directory has its System and/or Hidden attribute set.  This is 
  228. usually done by Windows to keep users from having access to the contents 
  229. of this folder.  There is no telling how Windows or other programs will 
  230. react if you hide this system folder.  It may cause all sorts of serious 
  231. trouble.  
  232.  
  233. REMEMBER:  If Windows or any other programs begin acting strangely or 
  234. locking up then your first move should be to remove any system folders 
  235. from your hidden folders list.

  237. Are you sure you wish to hide this folder?
  238. ¥This option attempts to get Explorer to update it's listings to reflect 
  239. the status of your hidden folders whenever Magic Folders exits.  It 
  240. doesn't always work - we think because Explorer doesn't refresh if the 
  241. disk cache hasn't changed.  Enabling "Write to Folders" may also help 
  242. force Explorer to refresh.  The disadvantage to having this option active 
  243. is that Explorer takes a few seconds to refresh its file listings. 
  244.  
  245. ₧This option attempts to refresh the desktop to accurately reflect the 
  246. status of your hidden folders whenever Magic Folders exits.  Because it 
  247. takes a few seconds to refresh the desktop there's no need to have this 
  248. option active if your desktop isn't affected by your hidden folders. 
  249.  
  250. ƒThis option creates and then deletes a file in each of your hidden 
  251. folders when Magic Folders exits in an attempt to get Windows to update 
  252. the disk cache.  Sometimes this works to force programs to update their 
  253. listings to reflect the status of your hidden folders.  Sometimes it 
  254. doesn't.  We can only hide the files, we can't control how programs react 
  255. when they can't find the hidden files.

  257. áAt the password screen, pressing Enter normally puts you into Magic 
  258. Folders.  Some users have asked us if we could make it so that pressing 
  259. Enter at the password screen exits in the same manner as clicking on the 
  260. yellow icon (exits and puts the "Hide Folders" icon on the taskbar).  
  261. This option tells Magic Folders to do just that.  
  262.  
  263. If this option is active then you get into Magic Folders by entering your 
  264. password and clicking on "OK".
  265.

  267. This allows us to prosecute those who defraud us.
