Checkers 1.2 by Magicwand Software
====================================
Checkers is a version of the board game of the same name. You play against the computer.
You can change the computer's difficulty level.
This new version 1.2 includes better graphics, an "Undo Move" button,
and a few fixes to the original version 1.0. Instructions for upgrading from version 1.0
can be found later in this file.
Rules
------
The object of the game is to take all the opponents pieces, or put him in
a situation where he has no valid move. You can either move diagonally up by one
square at a time, or jump over the opponents piece diagonally to a free square
on the other side (ie. by two squares diagonally), in which case the opponents
piece is removed (taken).
When you reach the top of the board, your piece becomes a king,
and can now move downwards or upwards diagonally.
You Must take an opponents piece if you can. When you move your mouse over a
piece that can be moved, a red box will appear. This can be helpfull to see which
moves are valid at the moment.
Buttons
--------
When you start up the game, you will see grey buttons. If the button does not work
for any reason, it's text will be greyed out. It should be obvious what the buttons
do, but here is a list anyway. If you are not sure about a button, press it and see
what happens - it shouldn't be anything bad.
Program options are saved, so next time you run Checkers your old options will be used.
Sound: This can either be "On", "On (fx only)", or "Off". Press it to cycle
through these options. To turn the speech off, use the "fx only"
option.
If you have no sound card, sound is unavailable or you downloaded
the "no sound" version, this button will be set to "Unavailable".
Your side: Choose whether you want to be White or Black.
Black always moves first.
Game Difficulty: Change the computer's difficulty level. Press "Ok" when finished.
Higher levels will take more computer thinking time,
these should be marked "slow" or "very slow".
About: Credits and copyright information.
Exit: Quits the game and returns to Windows.
New Game: Starts a new game of checkers.
During the game, some of the following buttons will be available:
Set Difficulty: See "Game Difficulty" above
Move Now: This button is available only when it is the computer's move and
it is thinking. Press it to stop the computer thinking and make it's
move immediately.
Offer Draw: If it's your turn and you see no way for either side to win, you can
offer to call this game a draw. The computer will consider this
and either accept or reject your offer.
Resign: Press this button to accept defeat. You will return to the main menu.
Get a Hint: This button gives you a hint on what may be a good move for you. The
move will be highlighted in white. There is no guarantee that it's
your best move, of course.
Undo Move: This button takes the game back to before your last move.
A useful button if you make a mistake...
Sometimes when the computer has been thinking for several seconds, a progress meter
will appear showing you roughly how far the computer has got. If you get impatient,
you can press "Move Now" and the computer will move quickly. If this happens a lot,
it may be easier to use the "Set Difficulty" button to lower the computer's level.
Keys
-----
Pressing Esc (also called Escape) will get you out of what you're doing at the moment.
To exit checkers quickly, press Esc a few times.

Make the new directory by typing
mkdir c:\checkers
cd c:\checkers
Now unzip your downloaded file. Assuming you are using pkzip, type

Click "Finish". Checkers has now been added to the Programs menu.
Click "Cancel" or "Ok" on the "Taskbar & Start Menu..." window if it is still there.
Upgrading from Checkers 1.0
------------------------------
To replace your old version of Checkers, simply extract the contents of the new zip
file to the existing Checkers installation directory (overwriting existing files).
You can always create a new directory/folder and install Checkers 1.2 as a new
installation - this keeps the existing Checkers 1.0 on your hard disk.
Sound Problems
---------------
Checkers automatically detects many sound cards, but sometimes you may need
to manually choose one yourself.
If you do not get any sound, try running the Sound Setup utility included in
the zip file: SetupSnd.exe
You can choose from a list of sound cards and test the settings to see if they
work. If you find one that does, save setting and quit, then try Checkers again.
