THE FTP SERV-U PROMO MESSAGE
========================
This is FTP Serv-U version 2.5f, a flexible FTP server (or Daemon) that is
easy to set up for MS-Windows (Win3.1, WFW3.11, Win95, Win98, NT, Win2000).
It turns any PC with a network connection into a FTP site on the Internet.
FTP Serv-U offers the following:
* A Windows standard: Over 20000 registered users with many for multiple
copies.
* Lots of security: Passwords, read/write/append/modify rights per directory
or file for each user (including ANONYMOUS), access on the basis of
IP-number.
* Supports multiple simultaneous users and transfers.
* Both in 16- and 32-bit, fast, and rock solid!
* Support for UL/DL ratios, disk quota limitations, network bandwidth
limiting, and automatic anti-anti-time-out plus anti-hammering measures.
* Can run as a 'system service' in Windows 95 and a tray-icon in Windows 95,
Windows 98, and NT 4.
* Users can be put into groups for easy maintenance of large numbers.
* Access to all drives on your PC, including network drives.
* A quite complete (and strict) implementation of RFC959 and RFC1123,
including support for passive mode transfers.
* Supports resuming of file uploads and downloads, as well as 'ls'
options and 'links' like those in UNIX.
* Full support for multi-homed IP sites, running multiple 'virtual' FTP
servers with a single instance of FTP Serv-U.
* Supports S/KEY one-time passwords.
* Configurable messages for sign-on, sign-off, login, and directory changes.
* Has a 'time-out' feature, so connections are automatically cleared when
idle or hung.
* Easy to setup and maintain through menus. For automated maintenance the
settings are stored in an .INI file of simple format.
* Has an open architecture which makes monitoring, changing and extending
the server behavior possible through external DLLs.
* Logs all transactions to file and screen that can be read by other
applications. Includes unique session IDs, time, and date stamps.
* Log file can be read by other applications while open, or transferred
through FTP Serv-U.
* It is dirt cheap, only around 0.1ct per line of code!
TRY-OUT
=======
FTP Serv-U is shareware, which means you can try it before you decide to
register (or not). Feel free to pass the try-out version around, but please
do not distribute any registration keys. The 45 day try-out version comes in
two flavors, one of which can be chosen during the first start-up: Either a
fully functional version that contacts a permission server to enforce the 45
days of try-out, or, a slightly crippled version that does not contact the
permission server.
INSTALLATION/UPGRADING
======================
FTP Serv-U comes in a zip-file which in turn contains a deluxe install
program guiding you through the installation. Just unzip the zip-file in a
temporary directory and run the setup program. Depending on your PC either
the 16- or 32-bit version will be installed. Then follow the interactive
setup and it will do the hard work for you. The setup program also installs
a start menu group and un-installer program. Once you are done you can
delete the original zip-file and extracted files. An uninstall program is
also included which makes complete removal of all FTP Serv-U files easy.
To upgrade from a previous version the same installation program can be
used. It will automatically look for and upgrade your existing installation
of FTP Serv-U. Of course, it never hurts to make a backup of your FTP Serv-U
directory before upgrading.
IMPORTANT NOTE FOR ISDN USERS
=============================
If your ISDN connection is billed 'per minute' instead of a flat rate, and
you have set up your system in such a way that it automatically connects to
the Internet when a program wants to send/receive packets a little care is
needed with FTP Serv-U. FTP Serv-U contacts a permission server if it is
started in fully functional try-out mode. If you are behind a firewall, or
the permission server is not reachable, FTP Serv-U will keep retrying to
find the permission server. Meanwhile the server will work just fine, but
your phone bill might get a bit out-of-hand if this goes on for a week or
so...
NOTES FOR SYSTEM ADMINISTRATORS
===============================
The self-extracting installation executable is a zip-file in itself which
can be unpacked using any unzip utility. This lets one scan the contained
executables for viruses if needed. Also, instead of the interactive setup
FTP Serv-U can be installed by simply copying the executable (FTP Serv-
U16.EXE or FTP Serv-U32.EXE) in to its destination directory. No other
system changes are needed. The manual in file FTP Serv-U.DOC has more
information relevant to system administrators, such as startup options and
network installation.
