The Online Quick Tour will get you started with step by step illustrated instructions on Go!Zilla's basic operations including browser integration, drag and drop, collecting and categorizing files, and downloading and scheduling your downloads. Select "Online Quick Tour" from the Help Menu.
Set your options by selecting "Go" from the menu and choose "Options" or hit ALT-O. You can setup connection information, default behavior, automation, transfer optimization, the way the Go!Zilla interface looks and more. Press F1 on any of the options pages to get detailed instructions on the options.
Go!Zilla will intercept downloads from your browser and intelligently search for mirror locations for that file from all over the world. It can deliver the quickest download around by dynamically finding the best site available to download your file at that moment.
If a download is interrupted because of line problems, dropped connections, server errors, program and system hangs or any of the millions of things that can go awry on the net, Go!Zilla will pick up the transfer from where the error occurred. Download large files with peace of mind and confidence.
You can easily restart a failed download by double clicking the failed partial download's icon from your desktop.
If Go!Zilla is intercepting a link that you click in your browser as a download that you donÆt really want Go!Zilla to handle, Browser Integration can be temporarily disabled for that link by holding down the ALT key as you click on the link in your browser. Hold down the ALT key and keep it pressed as you click the link in your browser and Go!Zilla will not attempt to intercept it as a download.
You can toggle browser integration on and off at any time by selecting "Browser Integration" from the "Auto" menu.
Go!Zilla's file list is where it all begins. Here you will see all your downloads, their information and their status whether they are newly added, downloaded, downloading, partially done, or scheduled for later.
The file list also offers virtual file management. From the file list, you can launch files that you've already downloaded, start downloading a file, search for mirrors for a file, or even visit the web page that you originally got the file from. Right click a file to see some of the possibilities.
You can sort your file list based on any of the columns: filename, file size, status, download location, % done, etc. Just click the column header you want to sort on. For example to sort by file size, click on the "Size" column heading.
Go!Zilla has three primary modes of operation. The main window which shows your categories and your file list. The drop target which floats above your browser window and allows you to easily drag multiple files from your browser to the target. And the tray, where it will wait quietly to capture downloads from your browser or to start scheduled downloads.
You can return to the Main Window from the drop target or the tray by right clicking the drop target or tray icon and selecting "Main Window" from the menu. You can also return by double clicking the drop target or single clicking the tray icon.
Create categories for all your different types of downloads and downloaded files. Select "Category" from the menu and choose "Add Category"
You can give your categories names and specify that certain types of files should be added to the category automatically. For example, create a category named "Images" and fill in the "Automatically Add Files of Types" with "GIF JPG JPEG PNG". Now any images you capture and download with Go!Zilla are automatically added to their own category.
Give each category it's own default download directory by typing the location into the Directory field or hit the Browse button. If you specify a directory that doesn't already exist, it will be created for you and all your files for that category will be placed in their own directory.
You can even set the speed at which files in a category will be downloaded. Adjust the category throttle slider to anywhere from 0% to 100% of your available bandwidth speed.
Under category options, you can set how many files from the category will be downloaded simultaneously. For example, you can restrict a category to download files 1 at a time for sites that only allow one login.
You can also set many option overrides for individual categories such as Priority, Number of Retries, mirror searching, etc.
Any options that are set for a category will override the global options specified under Options/Files.
To quickly add files to any category, drag the file's link from your browser window to the category's name in the Go!Zilla main window and drop it. Or drag the file to the drop target and drop it to the desired category.
Files can be moved between categories by dragging the file from the file list to the desired category in the left-hand category window.
Downloaded files will be placed on your desktop by default. You can set a new default download location for all your downloads under Options/Files. Type in your download location under "Default Download Directory" or hit the Browse button. If your new download directory does not exist, it will be created.
Downloaded files will be saved to the default directory specified under Options/Files or the Options for the file's category (if any). To save to a different location, press the "Save As" button on the Go!Zilla Download info box. Browse for a new save location.
You can stop the Go!Zilla Download info box from coming up when you add files to download. Go to Options/Files and uncheck "Show download info box when file added". Now when you add a file, it will be added to your file list where you can download the file later.
You can also stop the Go!Zilla Download info box from coming up for newly added files on a category by category basis. Select "Category" from the menu and choose "Edit" and find the category you want to edit. Uncheck "Show download info box when file added".
Sometimes you will have many files you want to download in a session, but you don't want them all going at the same time and overwhelming your internet connection. Select the number of files you want downloading at any one time under Options/Connection. Enter the number under "Max Simultaneous Downloads".
To select multiple files in the file list use group selection. You can select a group by either 1.Click on the first file in the group, and then shift-click on the last file of the group. All files between the first and last will be selected. 2. Press and hold CTRL while you click multiple files. All files selected will be grouped.
To batch download, select all the files you want to download then hit the "Download" button on the toolbar. Go!Zilla will immediately start to download the number of files up to the "Max Simultaneous Downloads" number. Any additional files will be queued. When one of the downloading files finishes, the next in the queue will start.
For example, if you want downloads to take place "single file" then enter 1 for the "Max Simultaneous Downloads".
Usually you will want to keep your "Max Simultaneous Downloads" at 1, 2 or 3. Having many concurrent transfers taking place will not speed up your total transfer speed and in many cases the network collisions caused by too much simultaneous activity can actually slow it down. Keep the number of simultaneous downloads low and use the download queue for large batches.
You can always see what is currently downloading and what is queued by selecting the "Downloading" category.
Files listed in the "Downloading" category are listed in the order that they are queued. Downloading files are at the top, followed by queued files in the order that they will be downloaded.
To change the order that queued files will be downloaded, select the "Downloading" category and drag queued files up and down to set their download order.
During a large batch download, you may want to change the way that the download progress windows appear. You can have the download windows appear normally, start minimized in the task bar, or not appear at all. You can set all of these from the "Window" menu.
To have download progress windows start minimized in the task bar, check the "Minimize Download Windows" option from the "Window" menu. Toggling this option will also minimize all current download windows.
If you don't want download progress windows at all, check the "No Download Windows" option from the "Window" menu. You will still be able to see all your downloads' progress from the main file list status.
You can set Go!Zilla to download files at scheduled dates and times. You can even set up recurring schedules where files will be downloaded at specified intervals. To set a file's schedule, select the file in the file list and press the "Schedule" button on the toolbar.
You can set the same schedule for multiple files by group selecting all the files and then press the "Schedule" button on the toolbar. All the selected files will be given the schedule you set.
To set a file's download schedule you need to specify three things. The schedule's date, the time, and whether it is a recurring schedule.
To set a schedule's date, select the month, year and date from the calendar. If it is not a recurring schedule, this is the day that the download will take place. If it is a recurring schedule, this date is when the recurring download will start for the first time.
To set a schedule's time, change the time by selecting the portion of the time you want to change and use the up/down arrows. For example, to change the hour, select the hour portion and use the arrow buttons to increment or decrement the hour.
A recurring schedule is set by checking the "Recurring Download" option in the schedule.
For a recurring schedule, specify the interval between downloads. You must also specify how you want the multiple recurring files to be treated. Select "Timestamp File" if you want all the files kept with a unique timestamp identifier of when they were downloaded. Select "Replace File" if you just want the new recurring download to replace the old one.
You can Pause, Resume, and quit any download in progress. Pausing and Resuming a download can be handy for freeing up bandwidth while you are waiting for a web page to load in your browser.
You can quickly control all downloads from the Main Window file list. ALT-P will pause all downloads, ALT-R will resume all downloads and ALT-F5 will cancel all downloads and queued downloads. ALT-F7 will remove all queued downloads but complete any currently downloading files.
Go!Zilla can automatically check all your incoming download files for viruses using your favorite virus checker. Under Options/Automation, check the "Virus Check Incoming Files" option. Then press the "Browse" button and locate your virus scanning software. Now all incoming files will be scanned.
You can set Go!Zilla to hang up your internet connection after it has completed all downloads and queued downloads. You can even set it to shut down your machine when it's done and turn off the power! You can set these options from the "Auto" menu.
To have Go!Zilla hang up after completing all your downloads, check the "Disconnect" option from the "Auto" menu.
To have Go!Zilla shut down your system after completing all your downloads, check the "Shut Down" option from the "Auto" menu. When your downloads are done, your system will be shut down and the power will even be turned off on computers that support power management.
You can even set Go!Zilla to automatically stop any current downloading activity and hang up from the internet at a specified time of day. For example, if you connect time rates increase at 7AM, Go!Zilla can make sure you get offline before the rates go up.
Set the download stop/hang up time by selecting "Set Stop Downloads/Hang up Time" from the "Auto" menu. Change the time by selecting what you want to change and using the up/down arrows. For example, to change the hour, select the hour portion and use the arrow buttons. Once the time is set, the option can be toggled on and off by checking the "Stop Downloads/Hang up At.." option from the "Auto" menu.
You can view a history log of all your downloads by pressing ALT-L or selecting "View Log" from the "Go" menu.
Hit ALT-S or select "Use Sounds" from the "Window" menu to toggle Go!Zilla's sounds on and off.
You can use your own favorite sounds for dozens of Go!Zilla events. Open up your Windows Control Panel and select "Sounds". Under Events, scroll down and locate the Go!Zilla section. Select the event you want such as "Adding File" or "Download Success" and use the "Browse" button to find the sound file you want for that event.
Go!Zilla will monitor your favorite programs for updates, announcements and changes with Monster Update.
To monitor a program for changes, select the file in your file list. Then select "Monster Update Monitor" from the "File" menu. Now whenever that program is updated, you'll get an automatic announcement.
When you receive a Monster Update announcement, it will give you a description of the update. Press the button at the bottom of the announcement to get more information or to download the new file.
To see your complete list of Monster Update monitored programs, press the "Monster Update" button on the toolbar. You will see the programs, where you got them from and the last time they were modified. Double click any program to see its announcements.
You can sort your list of Monster Update monitored programs by clicking the column header you want to sort. For example to sort the programs by the last time they were updated, click the "Last Update" column header.
Monster Update really shines when it is monitoring Download Management Protocol (DMP) enabled files. DMP makes it possible to get dynamic information about all your favorite programs. Check out the DMP enabled archive at http://www.webattack.com for a sample of what DMP can do.
You can quickly capture many files from an FTP site or web page with Go!Zilla's Link Leech. Press the "Leech Files" button on the toolbar to activate the Link Leech.
When the Link Leech is first activated, it will collect all the content information from wherever your browser is currently at. It will list all the links and files in the left hand window. To change to and leech a new location, either type in the location in the top bar or double click a link from the left hand window.
When leeching an FTP site, the leech will list all the files in the current FTP directory in the left hand window. It will also list the other FTP directories you can view. Select the files you want to download and press the "Add" button to add them to your list. Or double click a directory name to enter that FTP directory.
When leeching a web page, the leech will list all the files and links on the current web page. Select the files you want to download and press the "Add" button to add them to your list. Or double click a link to move to and leech from the linked web page.
You can filter what sort of files the Link Leech will show with the Leech filter. To enable the filter, check the box in the lower left corner. Enter the file types you want to see into the filter box. Now only those types of files will be displayed.
Once you have collected a bunch of files in the leech, you will probably want to categorize them. Select the category for your leeched files from the category drop down list or press the "New..." button to create a new category for your leeched files. Press "OK" and your files will be added to your file list in the selected category.
You can capture an entire FTP directory and all it's subdirectories and files with the link leech. Just select the directory you want, press "Add" to add it to your capture list, and hit the "OK" button. The entire FTP directory, its files, and its directory and subdirectory structure will be added to your file list for download.
You can immediately view any file in the Link Leecher. Just select the file and press the "View" button. The file will be immediately downloaded and displayed. This is handy for readme, text, graphic files, etc. that you want to see immediately.
Go!Zilla's content channels deliver you instant, up to date information about the downloads you are interested in. Select "Subscribe" from the "Channel" menu to see the latest offerings and check back often for new additions. Whether you download shareware, games, desktop themes, mp3s, there is a channel for you. Or create your own to share with the millions of other Go!Zilla users.
You can control how persistent Go!Zilla is at downloading difficult files and logging into busy sites under Options/Connection.
Set the number of times Go!Zilla will retry a failed download by selecting Options/Connection and entering the retry number under "Download Retries". The higher the number, the more persistent it will be. You can select bull-dog mode and have it continuously try until it succeeds by checking "Infinite Retries".
You can control how long Go!Zilla will wait between download or login retries by setting "Retry Wait" under Options/Connection. Set the value to 0 for no waiting between retries or a number for the number of seconds to wait between retries. This can keep you from hammering a site with constant requests to get it.
You can control how long Go!Zilla will wait without response from a server in various situations. These are called timeouts and are set under Options/Connection.
Set the Connect Timeout under Options/Connection to the time in seconds that Go!Zilla should spend trying to connect to a server. If this time elapses and it still hasn't started actually transferring the file, it will consider the attempt a failure.
Set the Transfer Timeout under Options/Connection to the time in seconds that Go!Zilla should spend waiting on an unresponsive server DURING a transfer. If this time period elapses without any acknowledgment or data from the server, it will consider the attempt a failure. Occasionally, servers will go unresponsive and your best course of action is to reinitiate communication with them. Hence the transfer timeout.
Set the Search Timeout under Options/Connection to the time in seconds that Go!Zilla should spend waiting on an unresponsive server during search operations such as looking for mirror sites or following redirects.
In order for Go!Zilla to be able to automatically connect to the internet and download files, you will need to tell it how you are connected to the internet under Options/Dial-Up Networking. Select your Dial-Up Connection from the drop down list and enter your username and password information.
If you do not use a dial up connection to access the internet (LAN, cable modem, etc.) or if you use America Online, select "No Dial-Up" from the Dial-Up Connection drop down list in Options/Dial-Up Networking.
If you do not want to use Go!Zilla's internal dialer, select "No Dial-Up" from the Dial-Up Connection drop down list in Options/Dial-Up Networking.
You can control how Go!Zilla searches for alternate file mirror locations under Options/FTP Search.
You can limit the number of mirror locations that Go!Zilla will find for any particular file. Under Options/FTP Search, enter the maximum number of alternate mirrors you want for a file under "Max Hits". While setting this number high may yield more possible mirror locations for some files, it will also slow down the searching process.
You can limit the countries or regions that Go!Zilla will find mirror locations for. Under Options/FTP Search select the country or region you want to limit returned mirrors to by selecting the country or region from the "Domains" drop down list. Now only mirror sites in that country or region will be returned.
You can reject certain sites that Go!Zilla might return as a mirror location. Under Options/FTP Search enter the list of sites you want to reject under "Reject mirror locations from". This is handy for rejecting certain sites that you know are slow or unresponsive or you just don't want to ever download from. These sites will never be returned as alternate mirrors.
You can turn off mirror site searching altogether by selecting the option "Never" for "Auto Search on New File" under Options/FTP Search. This option can also be turned on and off on a category by category basis.
You can set Go!Zilla to start up in any of its operational modes: normal Main Window, Drop Target, or Tray Icon. Select your preference by selecting "Start As" under Options/System.
You can control Go!Zilla's bandwidth usage and optimize your transfer settings under Options/Speed.
You can set every download's initial default bandwidth usage by adjusting the "Default Individual Download Throttle" under Options/Speed. Set the slider for anywhere between 0% and 100% of your total bandwidth. Once a download is started, it's bandwidth throttle can also be adjusted from the download progress window.
You can set the total amount of bandwidth usage for all Go!Zilla downloads by adjusting the "Global Throttle" under Options/Speed. Set the slider for anywhere between 0% and 100% of your total bandwidth. No matter how many files are downloaded at once, your total network usage will not exceed the global throttle. For example, you could set the global throttle to 50%, which would leave you half of your network throughput for web surfing.
You can have Go!Zilla optimize your transfers by automatically switching from an unresponsive site and intelligently searching for a faster site. Under Options/Speed you can toggle this intelligent site switching on and off by checking "Switch sites when Transfer Performance Low".
When Go!Zilla's intelligent site switching optimization is turned on under Options/Speed, you can specify your minimum acceptable download speed by entering that throughput in characters per second.
You can set how Go!Zilla's performance graphing appears in the main window and in the download progress windows under Options/Performance Graph. You can even switch between multiple graphing styles such as Stereo, Stereo Decay, or Line graphing.
Some downloads will require you to login to a password protected site. You can enter your usernames and passwords to sites you frequently download from under Options/Security.
To add a username/password for a site under Options/Security, press the "Add" button. Now enter the site name (For example www.microsoft.com or ftp.protected.com). Now just enter your username and password for that site and hit "OK".
You can enter your usernames/passwords under Options/Security or you can combine them into the web location you enter into Go!Zilla. For example entering the location ftp://myusername:mypassword@ftp.protected.com/path/file would log you into ftp.protected.com as myusername using mypassword.
You can customize the types of files that Go!Zilla will capture from your browser under Options/Automation. Select either Netscape Integration or Internet Explorer Integration depending on your browser.
