  2.                       FastFolders V2.42 Readme

  5. Welcome to FastFolders, a system extension which increases your
  6. productivity dramatically by giving you quick and easy access to
  7. folder contents and files. Without opening each and every folder,
  8. you can browse the directory structure starting at any point by
  9. clicking the right mouse button on a file, folder or drive. The 
  10. program modifies the context menus of shell objects, adding a menu
  11. item which displays the directory structure on demand. If you drag 
  12. and drop an object on a folder or drive using the right mouse button, 
  13. you can copy or move the object(s) to any folder of your computer by 
  14. selecting it from the FastFolders menu. In addition, FastFolders 
  15. includes a revolutionary feature to resize the items of the status 
  16. bars of all Explorer windows to fit all important information (e.g. 
  17. file sizes) optimally.

  20. Instructions:

  22. To use FastFolders, open the context menu of any shell object ("My
  23. Computer", "Network Neighborhood", a drive, folder or file, etc.) 
  24. by right-clicking it. When you move the mouse pointer over the
  25. FastFolders menu item, a submenu opens which displays the contents 
  26. of the selected object. To open any object, simply click the menu 
  27. item with the left mouse button. To access the context menu of the 
  28. object, click the right mouse button on the item.

  30. CLICKING THE FASTFOLDERS MENU ITEM ITSELF OPENS THE FASTFOLDERS
  31. OPTIONS DIALOG, which allows you to customize many options of
  32. FastFolders, including a filter for the file extensions to display.

  34. The FastFolders item of the context menu of the "Start" button in 
  35. the Taskbar contains all items of the Desktop. This allows quick 
  36. access to all objects on the Desktop.

  38. The usual keyboard navigation for menus also works with the
  39. FastFolders menus.

  41. IMPORTANT: Some users have reported, that SmartStatus occasionally
  42. causes Windows to hang at startup. If you experience this problem, 
  43. please select the option "Safe mode" in the SmartStatus group of 
  44. the main dialog. This way, SmartStatus will only be activated 
  45. after you right-click any object for the first time after booting 
  46. Windows.

  49. Uninstallation:

  51. To uninstall FastFolders, open the Windows Control Panel, select 
  52. "Add/Remove Programs" and the select the FastFolders item from 
  53. the list of installed programs. Click "Add/Remove" to remove 
  54. FastFolders from your system.

  59. Menu speed:
  60. It is recommended to set the menu show delay to 0 seconds, because
  61. this will allow the fastest navigation through the directory tree.
  62. Under certain circumstances, this setting may have no effect, e.g.
  63. if an old version of the MS IntelliMouse Driver is installed. In 
  64. this case, please update the driver to the newest version available
  65. from the Microsoft website (http://www.microsoft.com/mouse/).

  67. Default editor / viewer:
  68. This edit field allows you to specify a command line which is 
  69. invoked if you select a file type which has no executable program 
  70. associated with it. Typical examples are files like: "Readme.1st", 
  71. "Disk.id", "Setup.nfo", etc. It is recommended to enter your 
  72. favorite text editor, so you can view all these files quickly.
  73. By default, FastFolders chooses the program which is associated 
  74. with .TXT files (generally this is NOTEPAD.EXE). So the default 
  75. command line is: "C:\WINDOWS\NOTEPAD.EXE %1". The "%1" at the end 
  76. makes NotePad load the file which was selected by the user. If 
  77. you choose any other program than NotePad, loading the selected 
  78. file probably works the same way, so please make sure that the "%1" 
  79. is specified at the end of the command line.

  81. SmartStatus 98:
  82. If you are using Windows 98 or Windows 95 with Internet Explorer 4 
  83. and its desktop enhancements, you will probably have noticed that
  84. the important information in the status bars of Explorer windows
  85. (e.g. volume information for drives, file sizes) is only visible
  86. if you make the window very large. SmartStatus resizes the parts
  87. of the status bars to display all information optimally. (If you 
  88. are using Windows 2000, Windows NT or Windows 95 without IE 4.0, 
  89. SmartStatus has no effect!)

  91. Transition effects for menus and tooltips:
  92. For Windows 98 and 2000, transition effects for menus and tooltips 
  93. (e.g. fading, scrolling) are disabled for the FastFolders menus.
