ÇCHKDSK won't run with Magic Folders installed. We disable ChkDsk because it
can delete all your invisible files. (You can temporarily re-enable it
from the "Utilities" menu.) For more information select "Help" at the
main screen.
ChkDsk is the only program we've tested that causes a problem. The
following have been tested and work fine with Magic Folders: SCANDISK,
DEFRAG, Norton Disk Doctor, and Norton Speed Disk.
Do you use any other disk fix or defragmenting utilities not listed here?
üYou must test your disk fix and/or defragmenting utilities to see if
they're safe to use with Magic Folders. To do so, run them when your
Magic folders are visible and invisible. DO NOT FIX ANY REPORTED ERRORS.
If more errors are reported when your folders are invisible then do one
of the following:
1. Remove the utilities (so you can't use them) or remove Magic Folders.
2. Use only one account in Magic Folders (just use the Master Account
already created) and move the offending utility into one of your
invisible folders. That way it can only be run when all folders and
files are visible, and thereby safe.
Please send the results of your testing to: support@pc-magic.com Select
"Help" for more information.

âTo register via modem from outside the US or Canada please enter those
numbers that must be dialed to place a direct call to the United States.
These numbers often include a prefix to place an international call
followed by the country code for the United States. If you want to put
delays in your prefix dialing string, use a comma for every two second
delay needed.
Note: A successful registration may not be possible if a good modem
connection cannot be made due to line quality or delays. In addition,
international calling rates can be expensive, but in most cases will
still be less than the $4 mailing surcharge added to overseas orders that
are registered by other means.
äThank you for registering Magic Folders!
When you registered you received a file called MFD.SYS which tells Magic
Folders you're a registered user. MFD.SYS has been customized with your
personal information (See "Registered to..." in the "Registration" Menu)
and licensed for your use only. Giving MFD.SYS to others is illegal.
Make a backup copy of MFD.SYS as it is the key to your registration.
As long as it's in the same directory as MAGIC.EXE Magic Folders will be
registered.
One registration benefit is free updates for six months, provided you
download them. You can get the latest version at our WEB site:
"www.pc-magic.com" Just download the latest version and extract it
into the directory where the current version is located.
Note: If you charged your registration to your credit card the charge
will be to RSE Software. Thank you for your support.
àOne or more of the files needed to restore the last registered version
are missing. If you got a disk from us when you registered (modem
registrants don't unless they request one) then you can re-install that
version.
A better option is to visit our WEB page at: "pc-magic.com/", go to
the "Previous versions" page and click on the latest version created
within six months of your registration.
åYou can have up to 5 Magic Folder accounts. Each account can create
their own list of magic folders that are invisible to all other
accounts. However, only your "Master" account can un-install Magic
Folders and create new accounts.
If multiple accounts are created, no account has access to all the hidden
folders. Therefore you shouldn't create multiple accounts if you're
hiding an "un-safe" disk utility. Having multiple accounts also makes
backups tougher because no account has complete access to all hidden
folders. See "Multiple Accounts" in "Help" for more important
information.
Do you still wish to create another account?
ç"Magic Folders" Version: 99.09.1
Copyrighted 1996-99 by RSE Software Inc.
"Magic Folders" is licensed "As Is".
You can get the latest versions of all our software at our WEB site:
http://www.pc-magic.com
êOne benefit of registering Magic Folders is free updates for six months
(provided you download them - WEB site: www.pc-magic.com ). If you wish to
register a version of Magic Folders created after your six month free
updates period then you can do so for just $10. Of course, you can
continue using your currently registered version forever if you wish.
You don't need to update.
Only registered users may update their registrations at this special
price. Select "Full Registration" if this is the first time you have
registered. Select "Update Registration" to update your previous
registration for just $10. This will extend your free updates for
another six months.
By selecting "Update Registration" you authorize us to charge your credit
card the full registration fee if we can't verify your previous
registration.
Thank you.
ëAt this time we will create a "KeyDisk". This disk will let you get
into Magic Folders should you forget your password. It also lets you
disable Magic Folders from DOS should you not be able to use the
"Uninstall" feature within Magic Folders.
To create your KeyDisk put a blank, formatted disk in your floppy drive.
What drive is your KeyDisk in?
èYour KeyDisk has been created. Remove your KeyDisk now and write the
following on its label:
"Magic Folder KeyDisk - See README.TXT if you forget password or need to
uninstall and can't run Magic Folders."
Keep your KeyDisk safe.
ïMagic Folder KeyDisk
Forget your Password?
If you forget your password insert this KeyDisk, run Magic Folders and
attempt to enter your password three times. After the third attempt
Magic Folders will use this disk as a key to let you in. This only lets
you into the Master Account. If you forget the password to another
account you will have to un-install Magic Folders and re-install it again
to gain access to all the hidden folders.
Can't run Magic Folders?
If you need to uninstall Magic Folders and you can't use the Un-install
feature inside Magic Folders then boot from a system floppy, or if Win95,
safe boot to "Safe Command Prompt Only". Then insert this disk into
drive A:. At the DOS prompt enter "A:", and then enter "DISABLE".
îYou can use Magic Folders to restrict access to your computer. With
"AutoStart" installed Magic Folders asks you for your password whenever
your computer boots. Enter your password and your magic folders will
automatically become visible. How Magic Folders handles incorrect
passwords depends on which of the following two options you choose.
Select "Cancel" if you don't wish to install "AutoStart".
ìIt appears you have 32 bit File Access for Windows 3.11 activated.
Magic Folders will not work if 32 bit File Access is on. You can check
by going into Control Panel, clicking "Enhanced", then "Virtual Memory"
and checking the "Disk Status" section.
Do you wish to continue?
ÄMagic Folders didn't load correctly. MF.EXE (or whatever you renamed it
during installation) needs to be run from within your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
Make sure the "LH pathname\MF.EXE" statement (where "pathname" is the
directory where MF.EXE is located) is in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file and that
it directly proceeds the line that runs Windows. If it is and things
still don't work, please send e-mail to support@pc-magic.com and
reference Err 97.
ÅCHKDSK has been temporarily enabled. You can copy, move, delete, or use
it. However, keep in mind that using CHKDSK with Magic Folders can
delete any folders that are hidden at the time you use CHKDSK including
the folder containing your password information. See "Help" for details.
CHKDSK access will stay enabled until you re-boot, turn off your
computer, or run Magic Folders.
ÉæYou might want to check out Encrypted Magic Folders which provides the
hidden folder functions of Magic Folders *PLUS* automatic and transparent
encryption of your hidden folders and files. You can get Encrypted Magic
Folders at:
http://pc-magic.com

ù"AutoStart" lets you use Magic Folders to restrict access to your computer.
With "AutoStart" enabled Magic Folders asks you for your password
whenever your computer boots. Enter your password and your magic folders
will automatically become visible. Those without the correct password
can either be denied all access to the computer or just denied access to
your hidden folders. The choice is yours.
ÿCHKDSK won't run with Magic Folders installed. We disable
ChkDsk because it can delete all your invisible files including the file
containing your password data. If this option is checked then CHKDSK
protection is in place and you cannot use CHKDSK.
There may be situations where you want to be able to use CHKDSK. For
example, Win95 requires access to CHKDSK when creating an Emergency
access disk. To allow CHKDSK access then un-select this option. CHKDSK
access will only be in effect until you restart your computer or use
Magic Folders again.Ö
¢Thank you for registering Magic Folders!
When you registered you received a file called MFD.SYS which tells Magic
Folders you're a registered user. MFD.SYS has been customized with your
personal information and is for your use only. Giving MFD.SYS to others
is illegal.
You should backup MFD.SYS as there's a $5 charge if we need to replace
it. Would you like to back it up to your KeyDisk?
£This directory has its System and/or Hidden attribute set. This is
usually done by Windows to keep users from having access to the contents
of this folder. There is no telling how Windows or other programs will
react if you hide this system folder. It may cause all sorts of serious
trouble.
REMEMBER: If Windows or any other programs begin acting strangely or
locking up then your first move should be to remove any system folders
from your hidden folders list.
Are you sure you wish to hide this folder?
¥This option attempts to get Explorer to update it's listings to reflect
the status of your hidden folders whenever Magic Folders exits. It
doesn't always work - we think because Explorer doesn't refresh if the
disk cache hasn't changed. Enabling "Write to Folders" may also help
force Explorer to refresh. The disadvantage to having this option active
is that Explorer takes a few seconds to refresh its file listings.
₧This option attempts to refresh the desktop to accurately reflect the
status of your hidden folders whenever Magic Folders exits. Because it
takes a few seconds to refresh the desktop there's no need to have this
option active if your desktop isn't affected by your hidden folders.
ƒThis option creates and then deletes a file in each of your hidden
folders when Magic Folders exits in an attempt to get Windows to update
the disk cache. Sometimes this works to force programs to update their
listings to reflect the status of your hidden folders. Sometimes it
doesn't. We can only hide the files, we can't control how programs react
when they can't find the hidden files.
áAt the password screen, pressing Enter normally puts you into Magic
Folders. Some users have asked us if we could make it so that pressing
Enter at the password screen exits in the same manner as clicking on the
yellow icon (exits and puts the "Hide Folders" icon on the taskbar).
This option tells Magic Folders to do just that.
If this option is active then you get into Magic Folders by entering your
password and clicking on "OK".
íYour phone number will be recorded during the registration process.
This allows us to prosecute those who defraud us.
For the overwhelming majority who are honest, we apologize for this
message and want to assure you that we do NOT release your phone number,
or any of your registration information, to others.
Thank you
