Tips How to hide Desktop Surveillance from the user
Note: there is no 100% guarantee that the user will not discover the software
installed
1) disable warnings and indicators
- disable all options and warnings in the 'working modes' section
(these options can be customized in the full version only)
2) remove the program icon from the start menu
- from start menu, select Settings,Taskbar
- click on the 'Start Menu Programs' tab
- select Desktop Surveillance icon and remove it
3) hide the program installation
- install the software to a new folder which is not easily accessible to the user
eg. c:\windows\system\iobusys\anyfoldername\ods
- configure the recording path to a folder which is not likely to be accessed by the user
eg. c:\windows\system\whatever\somename
4) remove 'Desktop Surveillance' from the Add/Remove programs section in control panel
-open registry editor (REGEDIT) and edit or delete registry value
hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\uninstall\desktop surveillance
Note: take extra care and make a backup before you edit the registry
5) configure the software to make recordings at longer intervals, so that the user is not
alerted by disk activity
6) TO STOP THE USER FROM BEING ABLE TO DISABLE THE SOFTWARE
- set the 'Disable task switching' option - no user will be able to disable the software while it's running
7) the only files that need to be present for the program to operate:
ods.lic
spn.exe
and the required profiles (*.cfg)
8) when file ODS.DAT is removed from the program directory, user interface will no longer show
9) make the user unable to stop Desktop Surveillance from being loaded every time on the
system startup
disable registry editing tools (such as REGEDIT.EXE). You can achieve this either
by removing file regedit.exe or setting up appropiate user profile, with registry editing disabled
By applying this, you will also ensure that the user cannot learn where the recordings are stored
If you want to stop the user even from attempting to remove Desktop Surveillance, apply secure system
policies and user profiles - see Windows 95 / NT resource kit for more information on how
to do this
