  41. 1. About Folder Guard 
  42. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  44. Folder Guard is a software-only security solution for personal 
  45. or publicly accessible computers running the Windows 95/98 operating
  46. system.  Its features include:
  47.  
  48. o Complete control over access to files and folders of your choice.  
  49.   You can hide or make actually "read-only" any folder, so that 
  50.   access to its contents will be restricted to all applications 
  51.   including Explorer, MS Office, MS-DOS programs, common dialogs, 
  52.   etc.
  53.  
  54. o Optional user validation at logon, which helps protect your
  55.   Windows files from intruders.  You can choose to disable the
  56.   Cancel button on the logon prompt or set up a password to logon as
  57.   "default" user. A log file can be set up to help you keep track
  58.   of the use of your computer.
  59.  
  60. o Password access to protected files and folders that can be set up, 
  61.   or changed, at any time.
  62.  
  63. o Flexible control of user access to many Windows 95 resources, such
  64.   as the Start Menu, Control Panel, Active Desktop, etc.

  67.   resources that you can configure separately for each user of your

  86. You will find Folder Guard indispensable if you share your computer
  87. with others and you don't want any changes made to your files.  Or,
  88. if you allow your kids to play games on your system from time to
  89. time, and want to be sure that everything will be OK when they
  90. finish.  Or, if you don't want your parents to see some of your
  91. files.  Or, if you are a network administrator and your users give
  92. you a headache messing the files up all the time.  However you use
  93. Windows 95, you may have concerns about the security, privacy, or
  94. confidentiality of your files.  And now you have a single, effective
  95. solution -- Folder Guard.

  97.    CAUTION: Folder Guard is a powerful tool, which should be used
  98.             with care.  Using it thoughtlessly, you can
  99.             inadvertently make your computer inaccessible.  Please
  100.             take time reading Folder Guard Help before enabling
  101.             the protection of folders!

  103. Folder Guard includes automatic Setup utility, allowing you to
  104. painlessly install and uninstall Folder Guard.  Extensive context-
  105. sensitive Help provides a complete user's guide to Folder Guard.

  109. NOTE: Besides Folder Guard, we also publish a free utility, 
  110. Folder Guard Jr. THESE ARE TWO SEPARATE PRODUCTS! Throughout Folder 
  111. Guard documentation, "Folder Guard" is used to refer to "Folder Guard".  
  112. In those few instances where we refer to the freeware edition 
  113. of this software, we use its explicit name, "Folder Guard Jr." 
  114. We apologize for any confusion the similarity of the names of these 
  115. two separate products may cause.

  119. 2. System requirements
  120. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  121.  
  122. Folder Guard is designed for the operating system Windows 95/98. It
  123. will NOT install or work under Windows NT (you can use instead the
  124. built-in security features of Windows NT to controll access to the
  125. folders).  At least 1 MB (one megabyte) of free space on your hard
  126. disk is required to install Folder Guard.

  130. 3. Upgrading from a previous version of Folder Guard
  131. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  133. If you already have a previous version of Folder Guard running on 
  134. your computer, we recommend to back it up before installing the upgrade, 
  135. in order to be able to return to the previous version if you don't 
  136. like the updated one.
  137.  
  138. To backup the existing installation of Folder Guard, simply create a 
  139. folder on your hard disk to keep its files (say, C:\Backup\FGuard) and 
  140. copy all files from the folder where you have previously installed Folder 
  141. Guard into the backup folder. Also, make sure you have a copy of your 
  142. registration information saved or printed out on paper, since it may be 
  143. erased if you decide to uninstall Folder Guard.
  144.  
  145. Having saved the existing files, install the updated version over the 
  146. previous one, as described below in this file. If you decide to return 
  147. to the previous version, do the following: 1) uninstall the updated 
  148. version with Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs command; 2) restore 
  149. the files you have backed up; 3) run Setup.exe to restore the shortcuts;
  150. 4) run FGuard.exe to reenable the protection.

  154. 4. Obtaining an updated Registration Code
  155. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  157. If you have purchased a license for Folder Guard versions 4.01-4.08, 
  158. an UPDATED REGISTRATION CODE is required in order to register version
  159. 4.10 and later. The update is FREE! We will be sending out the updated 
  160. registration codes by email to all registered users we have on file. 
  161.  
  162. If you have not received an email from us with the updated registration 
  163. code, it might be because we have an incorrect or outdated email address 
  164. of yours. To request your FREE updated registration code, please visit
  165. our web site at:

  177. Make sure your email address is valid! Please allow up to three business 
  178. days to process your request. Meanwhile please continue using the previous
  179. version of Folder Guard. Or, you may wish to install the updated version 
  180. of Folder Guard in the evaluation mode, and enter your updated code later.

  186. 5. Installing and uninstalling Folder Guard
  187. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  189. Folder Guard comes with an automatic Setup utility, which allows you to 
  190. both install and uninstall Folder Guard.
  191.  
  192. To install Folder Guard:
  193. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  194.  
  195. a) If you have obtained Folder Guard as a compressed file,
  196.    uncompress the file into a temporary folder on a hard disk, or on
  197.    a floppy diskette.
  198.    
  199. b) Open folder containing the uncompressed set of Folder Guard files
  200.    and double-click 'Setup' (or 'Setup.exe').
  201.  
  202.    NOTE: If you have a previous version of Folder Guard already
  203.    installed on your computer and have set up the administrator's
  204.    password, you will be prompted for this password to continue the
  205.    installation.  Setup may also prompt you to restart Windows before 
  206.    the installation can be continued.
  207.  
  208. c) The installation program will prompt you to enter your name and a
  209.    Registration Code. If you have purchased a license for continued use
  210.    of Folder Guard and received your Registration Code, you may enter it
  211.    at that time, and the evaluation version of Folder Guard will be
  212.    converted into the registered one. Otherwise, you may skip entering
  213.  
  214.    the registration code and Folder Guard will operate in the evaluation
  215.    mode.
  216.  
  217.    NOTE: when entering the registration information, please make sure you
  218.    enter your name in exactly the same way as it is spelled on your
  219.    Registration Acknowledgment, otherwise the registration code will
  220.    not be accepted. If your name is not shown on the Registration 
  221.    Acknowledgment, you should spell your name in the same way as you
  222.    have spelled it when placing the order (that is, if you have ordered
  223.    with a credit card, enter your name as it appears on the card, etc.)
  224.  
  225.    NOTE: if you have registered version 4.01-4.08 of Folder Guard, an 
  226.    updated registration code is required to register this version. Please 
  227.    see above in this file for information on obtaining the updated code.
  228.  
  229. d) The Setup utility will also suggest you the folder in which to install
  230.    Folder Guard.  You may accept the suggestion or choose other
  231.    location for Folder Guard files.  
  232.  
  233. e) Setup utility will copy the files into the specified folder.
  234.  
  235.    NOTE: Except for the files copied into the destination folder and,
  236.    optionally, for the shortcuts added to the Start Menu and/or to the
  237.    Desktop folder (as described above), Setup does not install or 
  238.    modify any other files on your computer.
  239.    
  240. f) After the installation has been complete, you may delete files
  241.    from the temporary folder, from which you were installing Folder
  242.    Guard.
  243.  
  244.    NOTE: At this point Folder Guard, although installed, in no way
  245.    affects the operation of your computer.  That is, all folders can
  246.    be freely accessed, as before, and no other restrictions are
  247.    imposed on the use of the computer.  To enable the protection of
  248.    folders you must run Folder Guard (FGuard.exe) and use its commands
  249.    to specify how exactly you want your computer to be protected.
  250.  
  251.    NOTE: We strongly advise you to backup the Windows Registry before 
  252.    you use Folder Guard for the first time. To backup the Registry, you
  253.    may wish to make use of the REGISTRY.BAT utility, included in this
  254.    package. Please refer to Folder Guard Help for more information on 
  255.    the Registry and using the REGISTRY.BAT utility.

  257. If anything goes wrong...
  258. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  259.  
  260.    If you have set up Folder Guard so that the folder protection is
  261.    enabled at Windows startup, and Windows 95 fails to boot properly, 
  262.    this means that Folder Guard is incompatible with some hardware or
  263.    software already installed on your computer.
  264.  
  265.    In such a case, try to boot Windows 95 in the "safe" mode (by pressing
  266.    F8 while the "Starting Windows 95..." text is shown on the screen and
  267.    choosing "safe mode" from the menu).  After Windows 95 loads in the
  268.    "safe" mode, run Folder Guard and turn OFF the "Enable at Windows 
  269.    startup: Folder Protection" option. This should make Windows bootable 
  270.    again.
  271.  
  272.    Alternatively, boot Windows in the "command prompt only" mode or from
  273.    a bootable floppy disk.  When the command prompt appears, change
  274.    directory to the folder in which you have installed Folder Guard and
  275.    rename FGuard.VxD to some other name, for example, FG.VxD.  Then try
  276.    to boot Windows as usually, ignoring the message about a missing
  277.    FGUARD.VXD driver.
  278.  
  279.    After Windows 95 is ready to use, you may wish to uninstall Folder
  280.    Guard.
  281.  
  282. To uninstall Folder Guard:
  283. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  284.  
  285. NOTE: it is NOT sufficient to simply delete files from the Folder
  286.    Guard folder to completely uninstall it.  Please follow the
  287.    procedure described below to uninstall Folder Guard and clean up
  288.    your system configuration:
  289.  
  290. a) Open folder 'Control Panel' and double-click on 'Add/remove
  291.    programs'.
  292.    
  293. b) Find the line "Folder Guard" in the list of products
  294.    which can be uninstalled and double-click it.
  295.  
  296.    NOTE: If you have set up the administrator's password, you will
  297.    be prompted for this password to continue. installation.  You 
  298.    may also be prompted to restart Windows before the uninstallation
  299.    can be continued.
  300.  
  301. c) The "Uninstalling Folder Guard" dialog box will appear prompting
  302.    you to confirm that you want to uninstall Folder Guard.  You may
  303.    choose to deactivate Folder Guard, delete its application files,
  304.    delete user files related to Folder Guard, and/or reset Folder
  305.    Guard settings. Press the Help button in this dialog box for more
  306.    information on the options offered.
  307.    
  308. d) After the uninstalling procedure has been finished, you may need
  309.    to go to the folder where Folder Guard files were installed and
  310.    delete remaining files.

  314. 6. This is TRY BEFORE YOU BUY software
  315. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  317. This is NOT freeware or public domain software.  This is software
  318. which you can "try before you buy".
  319.  
  320. You may install the program in your system and use it for an
  321. evaluation period of up to 14 days.  After that time, you are
  322. required to purchase a license for continued use of the software or
  323. else stop using it.  You may freely copy and distribute evaluation
  324. copies of Folder Guard provided that all conditions specified in the
  325. distribution license are satisfied (please see the license agreement
  326. in the VENDINFO.DIZ file.)

  328. What's the difference between the Evaluation and Licensed versions?
  329.  
  330. There is NO functional difference between the evaluation and
  331. licensed versions of this software: all features of the licensed
  332. version are available and can be used in the evaluation version.
  333. Actually, it's the same program: you may convert an evaluation copy
  334. to a registered copy by entering your name and a Registration Code.
  335. Similarly, a registered copy of the program may be 'unregistered' by
  336. deleting the registration code or by just copying the program to
  337. another machine.

  339. The only difference between the licensed and evaluation versions is
  340. the prompt to disable Folder Guard, displayed by the evaluation
  341. version from time to time:

  362. While you are evaluating Folder Guard, you may reply "No" to this
  363. prompt and Folder Guard will continue its normal operation,
  364. restricting access to the folders you have chosen to protect.  If
  365. someone else is using the computer, though, that user may reply
  366. "Yes" to this prompt and thus restore access to the protected
  367. folders.
  368.  
  369. To prevent this prompt from being displayed, you must register
  370. Folder Guard -- either by supplying a valid Registration Code at the
  371. end of the installation procedure, or by entering the Registration
  372. Code with the "Help | About" command of Folder Guard.
  373.  
  374. To obtain a Registration Code, you must purchase a license for
  375. continued use of Folder Guard.  Please refer to PURCHASE.TXT file 
  376. for detailed instructions and order forms.  You may order Folder 
  377. Guard with a check or money order.  Major credit cards accepted.
