  7. If you received this version of WinPatch in a self-extracting ZIP file 
  8. (for example, WP.EXE), you can install it as follows:

  10. * On Windows 95/98, Windows NT 4.0, and Windows 2000: select 
  11. Run from the Taskbar Start menu, 
  12. type the full name of the file (for example, C:\DNLOAD\WP.EXE), press 
  13. the Enter key, and follow the prompts.

  15. If you received this version of WinPatch in a ZIP file, first extract the 
  16. files to a directory on your hard drive, then  select Run from the Start menu, 
  17. type C:\ANY_DIR\SETUP.EXE, press the Enter key, and follow the prompts.

  21. *** WinPatch Requirements ***
  22.  
  23. WinPatch is a 32-bit program that requires Windows 95/98 or Windows NT 4.0 or 
  24. Windows 2000, or later.  WinPatch requres less than 2mb of hard disk space.  
  25. Memory requirements match that of the operating system you are using.  
  26. I recommend that anyone using Windows 95 have at least 16mb of memory.  
  27. Windows NT users should have at least 20mb of memory.

  30. *** What is WinPatch used for? *** 
  31.  
  32. WinPatch is used to build or apply a patch file. Patch files greatly 
  33. simplify the task of providing file updates to your users.  Patch 
  34. files contain only the changes made from one set of files to another.  
  35. Therefore, user updates can be distributed at a fraction of the cost 
  36. of re-distributing the entire set of files.

  38. Patch files also insure the intellectual investment in you software.  
  39. UserÆs must have a valid copy of your software for them to be able 
  40. to apply the patch file.

  42. How WinPatch works: The WinPatch build process compares a set of old 
  43. files in one folder to a set of newer files in another folder. WinPatch 
  44. also compares all of the folders inside each folder.  WinPatch has 
  45. been tested with complex file systems that contained many different 
  46. files and folders containing over a 100 megabytes of data.

  48. During the compare process, WinPatch analyzes and compares the files 
  49. determining which folders and files have been modified and added in 
  50. the folder with the newer files.  WinPatch then creates a WinPatch 
  51. file (.WNP) containing the changes needed to update the folder of 
  52. older files to the newer files.

  54. The second step to this process is to apply the WinPatch file to a 
  55. folder that contains an old set of files, such as one that exists on 
  56. one of your user's personal computer.  This process is called Apply.  
  57. This SHAREWARE copy of the WinPatch master program allows you to create 
  58. and apply patch files.  Registering the WinPatch program entitles you 
  59. to use the registered version of the WinPatch master program, plus a 
  60. distributable, Apply - Only program.

  62. Using WinPatch: WinPatch was designed for both the experienced developer 
  63. and those who may be new to patch file technology.  For the experienced, 
  64. there is an expert mode, making quick work of creating or applying a 
  65. patch file.  For those new to creating or applying patch files there is 
  66. a Wizard that guides the user through every step of the process.

  68. WinPatch is a shareware program that can be purchased for US$50.00 
  69. directly from Artistry, Inc, and using a credit card 
  70. from DigiBuy, www.digibuy.com.  For more information, read the 
  71. file order.txt that's installed in the WinPatch 1.2 file folder.
