  1. Virgule Escapement is a frictional-rest escapement
  2. like cylinder, and as such the balance is never
  3. detached. The action of the escapement is that as
  4. the balance turns a tooth is resting on the circular
  5. body of the virgule, and as the balance continues to
  6. turn the wheel tooth drops off the body and into the
  7. inside, thus giving no impulse; the wheel tooth is
  8. resting  on the inside and the virgule revolves round
  9. it. As the balance changes its direction at the end
  10. of its vibration the tooth reaches the end of the
  11. shell as it may be called, and drops on to the hook
  12. or impulse plane, proceeding to push the pallet round
  13. thus giving impulse. As the balance progresses the
  14. tooth drops on the body of the virgule, where it
  15. rests as the balance continues on its path. As soon
  16. as its momentum is exhausted the balance again reverses,
  17. and as the corner of the lip of the virgule is reached
  18. the wheel tooth drops inside and the sequence is
  19. again repeated.
