- Verge Escapement
- The balance wheel, like the crown wheel in a
- clock, must have an odd number of teeth,
- otherwise the escapement cannot funtion.
- The number of teeth in the wheel is controlled
- by the amount of room available. In the old
- thick watches 17th were no uncommon, but any
- odd number between 9 to 17 is quite usual.
-
- Although it has been advocated that a verge
- should not be oiled, it is usual to lightly
- oil the pads, and from experience it would
- seem that this is necessary as long as the
- oiling is not excessive, i.e. enough oil
- should be used to keep the wheel teeth
- slightly damp but not enough to pick up dust
- and dirt.
