  1. Verge Escapement
  2. The balance wheel, like the crown wheel in a
  3. clock, must have an odd number of teeth,
  4. otherwise the escapement cannot funtion.
  5. The number of teeth in the wheel is controlled
  6. by the amount of room available. In the old
  7. thick watches 17th were no uncommon, but any
  8. odd number between 9 to 17 is quite usual.

  10. Although it has been advocated that a verge
  11. should not be oiled, it is usual to lightly
  12. oil the pads, and from experience it would
  13. seem that this is necessary as long as the
  14. oiling is not excessive, i.e. enough oil
  15. should be used to keep the wheel teeth
  16. slightly damp but not enough to pick up dust
  17. and dirt.
