  1. Double Virgule Escapement - The escape wheel
  2. carries two sets of pins, one set above
  3. the other below. The balance staff has two
  4. cams A and B made integral with the staff.
  5. At A the lower cam is riding or reposing
  6. on a lower pin of escape wheel. As the
  7. staff rates in the direction of the arrow
  8. the tooth pin escapes, as at A' and delivers
  9. impulse on the long curve. As it leaves the
  10. cam, the next upper pin tooth drops and
  11. reposes on B". The balance having made its
  12. half circuit, the pin gives impulse on B"'.
  13. The skill required to make this escapement
  14. and some difficulty in keeping the pins
  15. lubricated, conspired against its wide
  16. adoption.
