  10.  This program automatically updates Norton AntiVirus with the latest 
  11.  virus definitions. It automatically searches for Norton AntiVirus on 
  12.  your computer and updates the necessary files.

  40. Installation Files and Disk Sets
  41. =====================================================================
  42.  
  43.  The Intelligent Updater installation disks or CD contains several  
  44.  executable files. The filenames change from week to week. They show 
  45.  the month (mm) and day (dd) that the definitions were released.
  46.

  93.                   This is a large file for administrators who update 
  94.                   multiple versions of Norton AntiVirus. For more
  95.                   information, refer to the .txt files that come 
  96.                   with this program. It is not available on floppy 
  97.                   disk.

  100.                   for Norton AntiVirus for NT Server, DEC Alpha 
  101.                   version.

  105. I. Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Windows 95
  106. =====================================================================
  107.  
  108.  IMPORTANT! Check the Norton AntiVirus version first
  109.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  110.  These new virus definitions are not compatible with older versions 
  111.  of Norton AntiVirus, and may cause it to report false virus 
  112.  detections. To see which version you are using, click Help on the 
  113.  Norton AntiVirus menu bar. Then select About Norton AntiVirus. 
  114.  
  115.  Norton AntiVirus 2.0 users should be using version 2.01. If you need 
  116.  to update Norton AntiVirus, the patch filename is NAV95201.EXE.
  117.  
  118.  This patch is available on the Symantec BBS (541-484-6669), the 
  119.  Symantec FTP site (ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/...), the Symantec 
  120.  Web site (http://www.symantec.com/nav/index_updates.html), 
  121.  CompuServe, or America Online. You can also call Customer Service 
  122.  at (800) 441-7234 to order a disk set. 
  123.  
  124.  Download or copy the patch file to a temporary directory and run it 
  125.  to extract the necessary files. Then click Setup to begin the 
  126.  installation process. After applying this patch, you must update the 
  127.  virus definition set.

  129.  Updating Norton AntiVirus 2.0 virus definition files
  130.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  131.  1. Run the file mmddI16.EXE (or mmddI161.EXE if using the multi-file
  132.     floppy disk set). The mmdd represents the date of the definition
  133.     set. For example, the filename would be 1231I16.EXE for the 
  134.     December 31 definition set. 
  135.  2. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  136.  3. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive before you reboot
  137.     your computer to activate the new virus definitions and rebuild 
  138.     critical files.
  139.  4. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new 
  140.     definitions.

  144. II. Norton AntiVirus 4.0 & 5.0 for Windows 95
  145. =====================================================================
  146.  
  147.  1. Run the file mmddI32.EXE (or mmddI321.EXE if using the
  148.     multi-file, floppy disk set). The mmdd represents the date of the
  149.     definition set. For example, the filename would be 1231I32.EXE
  150.     for the December 31 definition set.

  155. III. Norton AntiVirus 3.0 and 4.0 for DOS / Windows 3.x

  158.  IMPORTANT! Check the Norton AntiVirus version first

  160.  Check the date of the Norton AntiVirus executable files (NAV.EXE, 
  161.  NAVW.EXE) to see if they are earlier than June 1, 1996. If they are, 
  162.  update them with the UPDATEME.EXE patch. 
  163.  
  164.  This patch is available on the Symantec BBS (541-484-6669), the 
  165.  Symantec FTP site (ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/...), the Symantec 
  166.  Web site (http://www.symantec.com/nav/index_updates.html), 
  167.  CompuServe, or America Online. You can also call Customer Service

  182.  1. Run the file mmddI16.EXE (or mmddI161.EXE if using the multi-file
  183.     floppy disk set). The mmdd represents the date of the definition 
  184.     set. For example, the filename would be 1231I16.EXE for the 
  185.     December 31 definition set. 
  186.  2. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  187.  3. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive before you reboot
  188.     your computer to activate the new virus definitions and rebuild 
  189.     critical files.
  190.  4. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new 
  191.     definitions.
  192.  
  193.  Updating NAV 3.0/4.0 virus definition files using DOS
  194.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  195.  1. If you are running Windows, exit to DOS. To do this, select Exit
  196.     from the File menu.
  197.  2. Make sure you have a temporary directory on your system that you 
  198.     can use to unload the virus definitions. Set this directory in 
  199.     DOS using the SET command. For example, type SET TEMP=C:\TEMP if 
  200.     the temporary directory is C:\TEMP. 
  201.  3. Run the file mmddI16.EXE (or mmddI161.EXE if using the multi-file
  202.     floppy disk set). The mmdd represents the date of the definition 
  203.     set. For example, the filename would be 1231I16.EXE for the 
  204.     December 31 definition set. 
  205.  4. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  206.  5. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive before you reboot
  207.     your computer to activate the new virus definitions and rebuild 
  208.     critical files.
  209.  6. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new 
  210.     definitions.

  212.  Troubleshooting
  213.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  214.  If the VIRSCAN.ZIP files are not deleted after a failed or 
  215.  cancelled attempt at updating the virus definitions, they can cause 
  216.  errors when running the Intelligent Updater program. To prevent 
  217.  these types of errors, make sure that the temporary directory is 
  218.  empty before starting the update.
  219.

  222. IV. NT Tools, NT Scanner and Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Windows NT
  223. =====================================================================
  224.  
  225.  1. Run the file mmddI16.EXE (or mmddI161.EXE if using the multi-file
  226.     floppy disk set). The mmdd represents the date of the definition 
  227.     set. For example, the filename would be 1231I16.EXE for the 
  228.     December 31 definition set. 
  229.  2. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  230.  3. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive before you reboot
  231.     your computer to activate the new virus definitions and rebuild

  238. V. Norton AntiVirus 4.0 & 5.0 for Windows NT
  239. =====================================================================

  242.     floppy disk set). The mmdd represents the date of the definition 
  243.     set. For example, the filename would be 1231I32.EXE for the 
  244.     December 31 definition set.

  249. VI. Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for NetWare
  250. =====================================================================
  251.  
  252.  IMPORTANT! Check the Norton AntiVirus version first
  253.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  254.  If your version of NAV 2.0 for NetWare is dated earlier than 
  255.  December 13, 1995, you must upgrade your software before updating 
  256.  the virus definition files. The newer releases of Norton AntiVirus 
  257.  for NetWare v2 detect and remove Microsoft Word and Excel macro 
  258.  viruses. For information on how to receive the update, call Customer 
  259.  Service at (800) 441-7234.
  260.  
  261.  To update Norton AntiVirus for NetWare virus definition files: 
  262.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  263.  1. On a workstation connected to the network, map a drive letter to 
  264.     the volume and directory where Norton AntiVirus for Netware is 
  265.     installed. You must have read and write access to the mapped 
  266.     drive.
  267.  2. Disable the Norton AntiVirus for NetWare NLM. To do this, select
  268.     DISABLE NLM from the Tools menu in the Norton AntiVirus for 
  269.     NetWare Windows configuration window. Or, you can press F3 at the 
  270.     NAVNLM server console screen.
  271.  2. At a DOS prompt, change to the directory that contains the 
  272.     Intelligent Updater file. 
  273.  3. From a DOS prompt, type mmddN16.EXE [path] (or mmddN161.EXE 
  274.     [path] if using the multi-file floppy disk set) where the [path]
  275.     is the location you mapped in step 1. The mmdd represents the
  276.     date of the definition set. For example, the filename would be
  277.     1231N16.EXE for the December 31 definition set.
  278.  6. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  279.  7. Enable the Norton AntiVirus for NetWare NLM. Choose ENABLE NLM 
  280.     from the Tools menu in the Norton AntiVirus for NetWare Windows 
  281.     configuration window. Or, you can press F2 at the NAVNLM server 
  282.     console screen.
  283.  8. If you created a temporary drive mapping, delete it.
  284.  
  285.

  287. VII. Norton AntiVirus 4.0 for NetWare
  288. =====================================================================
  289.  
  290.  1. On a workstation connected to the network, map a drive letter to 
  291.     the volume and directory where Norton AntiVirus for Netware is

  313. VIII. Norton AntiVirus Network Manager
  314. =====================================================================
  315.  
  316.  IMPORTANT! Check the Norton AntiVirus version first

  318.  Check the date of the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager executable 
  319.  file (NAVNET.EXE) to see if it is earlier than June 1, 1996. If it 
  320.  is, you must update it with the UPDATEME.EXE patch before installing

  333.  the UPDATEME.EXE patch will not extract the network files. Copy 
  334.  NAVNET.EXE and NAVNETW.EXE to your local NAV directory. Then run 
  335.  UPDATEME.EXE to extract the files. The complete directions are 
  336.  explained in the READ.ME file. 
  337.  
  338.  After updating Norton AntiVirus Network Manager, recreate your .NNS 
  339.  files using the new _DEFAULT.NNS as a template. For more information 
  340.  on recreating .NNS files, order FaxBack #913024 from our free 
  341.  FaxBack service at (541) 984-2490, option 2.
  342.  
  343.  The NAV 3.11 patch contains the April 1997 virus definition set. You
  344.  must apply the latest virus definition set update after completing
  345.  the program update.
  346.  
  347.  Updating Norton AntiVirus Network Manager virus definitions
  348.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  349.  1. On a workstation connected to the network, map a drive letter to 
  350.     the volume and directory where Norton AntiVirus Network Manager
  351.     is installed. You must have read and write access to the mapped 
  352.     drive.
  353.  2. At a DOS prompt, change to the directory that contains the 
  354.     Intelligent Updater file. 
  355.  3. Type mmddI16.EXE [path] (or mmddI161.EXE [path] if using the
  356.     multi-disk floppy disk set) where the [path] is the location of
  357.     the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager that you just mapped. The
  358.     mmdd represents the date of the definition set. For example, the
  359.     filename would be 1231I16.EXE for the December 31 definition set.
  360.  4. Follow the instructions on screen.
  361.  5. Start Norton AntiVirus from the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager
  362.     directory and scan the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager directory 
  363.     to activate the new virus definitions and rebuild critical files. 
  364.     To do this, type NAV from the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager 
  365.     directory.
  366.  
  367.  
  368. =====================================================================
  369. IX. Norton AntiVirus Network Manager for Win95 and WinNT
  370. =====================================================================
  371.  
  372.  Installing the definitions for Network Manager involves three steps.
  373.    1. Find the directory where virus definitions are stored.
  374.    2. Copy the appropriate Intelligent Updater program to that 
  375.       directory.
  376.    3. Run the Intelligent Updater program using the /dump command to 
  377.       extract the appropriate files.
  378.  
  379.  Locating the Definitions Directory
  380.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  381.  1. Find the .NNS file that Norton AntiVirus uses to distribute 
  382.     files. To find out which .NNS file the network uses, check the 
  383.     network login script. If it uses a customized .NNS file, the 
  384.     login script will specify the location of that file. If not, 
  385.     search the login script for the location of the NAVCHECK.EXE and 
  386.     NAV32UP.EXE distribution files. The default .NNS file 
  387.     (_DEFLT32.NNS) will be in the directory containing NAVCHECK.EXE 
  388.     and NAV32UP.EXE.
  389.  2. Look in the .NNS file for the parameter that points to the virus 
  390.     definitions directory. 
  391.       * In NavNet32 v2.0, the parameter "NAVDefDir" points to 
  392.         the definitions. 
  393.       * In NavNet32 v4.x, the parameter "NAVDefDir95" points to the 
  394.         Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95 definitions. The parameter 
  395.         "NAVDefDirNTWKS" points to the Norton AntiVirus for NT 
  396.         workstation definitions, and "NAVDefDirNTSRV" points to the 
  397.         Norton AntiVirus for NT server definitions.
  398.  3. Note the definitions directory to be updated. 
  399.  
  400.  Updating Definitions for Norton AntiVirus 2.0 
  401.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  402.  1. Map a drive letter to the network volume and directory containing 
  403.     the definitions to be updated. You must have WRITE access to the 
  404.     mapped drive.
  405.  2. Copy (do not Move) the mmddI16.EXE file to the mapped network 
  406.     definitions directory. The mmdd represents the date of the    
  407.     definition set. For example, the filename would be 1231I16.EXE 
  408.     for the December 31 definition set.
  409.  3. Open a command line session (DOS box) and change to the mapped 
  410.     drive containing the older definitions and the new Intelligent 
  411.     Updater program.
  412.  4. To update definitions type mmddI16 /DUMP.
  413.  5. Delete mmddI16.EXE (or mmddI161.EXE) from the definitions 
  414.     directory.

  416.  Updating Definitions for Norton AntiVirus 4.0 
  417.  --------------------------------------------------------------------
  418.  1. Map a drive letter to the network volume and directory containing 
  419.     the definitions to be updated. You must have WRITE access to the 
  420.     mapped drive.
  421.  2. Copy (do not Move) the mmddI32.EXE file to the mapped network

  433. X. Norton System Center
  434. =====================================================================
  435.  
  436.  See the Norton System Center documentation for instructions on 
  437.  distributing virus definitions with Central LiveUpdate. To 
  438.  distribute virus definition updates without Central LiveUpdate:
  439.  
  440.  1. Download the latest version of Intelligent Updater (v4.0).
  441.  
  442.  2. Copy Intelligent Updater to the definitions folder of your NSC 
  443.     installation. By default the location is the 
  444.     \NSC Repository\Products\NAV\Defs\Intel or Alpha folder.
  445.  
  446.  3. To avoid changing the job every time you update the definitions, 
  447.     rename the Intelligent Updater file as NEWDEFS.EXE and set the 
  448.     job to run this file. Otherwise you will always have to modify 
  449.     the job to use the correct file name. 
  450.  
  451.  4. Start Norton System Center and run your virus definitions rollout 
  452.     job. For more information on setting up NSC jobs, see your NSC
  453.     documentation.
  454.  
  455.  Whenever you want to distribute updated virus definitions, download 
  456.  a new Intelligent Updater, copy it to the source distribution 
  457.  folder, rename it NEWDEFS.EXE, and rerun the job. 
  458.  
  459.

  461. XI. Norton AntiVirus for NT Server, DEC Alpha version
  462. =====================================================================
  463.  
  464. 1. Download the file mmddA32.ZIP.
  465. 2. Unzip this file into the Incoming directory: 
  466.    \Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\VirusDefs\Incoming 
  467. 3. Norton AntiVirus will automatically begin using the new 
  468.    definitions.

  471. XII. Norton AntiVirus for OS/2
  472. =====================================================================
  473.  
  474. 1. Download the file mmddO32.ZIP.
  475. 2. Unzip this file into the Incoming directory: 
  476.    \SYMANTEC\COMMON\SHARED\VIRUSDEFS\INCOMING
  477. 3. Norton AntiVirus will automatically begin using the new 
  478.    definitions.

  481. XIII. Norton AntiVirus Internet Email Gateways
  482. =====================================================================
  483.  IMPORTANT! It is highly recommended that you update this product
  484.  With Live Update. If you must use the Intelligent updater then follow
  485.  these instructions carefully.
  486.  
  487. 1. Go to the Start menu and select "settings\control panel".
  488.    Select "services". Find "NAV for Internet Email Gateways" in the
  489.    service list and select it, then select the "stop" button. Select
  490.    "yes" when asked to confirm.
  491. 2. From a command prompt type "mmddX86.EXE /ieg". Remember the
  492.    the "mmdd" represents the date of the definition set so it will
  493.    change. For example, the filename would be 1231X86.EXE
  494.    for the December 31 definition set.
  495. 3. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  496. 4. When Intelligent Updater finishes installing the definitions,
  497.    Select the "start" button to start the service again.
  498.

  500. XIV. Norton AntiVirus Firewalls
  501. =====================================================================

  528.  1. Copy the Intelligent Updater program (mmddI16.EXE, mmddI161.EXE,
  529.     mmddI32.EXE, or mmddN16.EXE) to an empty, temporary folder.

  531.  2. Launch the Intelligent Updater program using the /DUMP command. 
  532.     This will extract all the virus definitions to the folder. For 
  533.     example, type mmddI32.EXE /DUMP to extract the files. The mmdd 
  534.     represents the date of the definition set. For example, the 
  535.     filename would be 1231I32.EXE for the December 31 definition set.

  537.  3. Copy the files to the virus definition folder. If you are using 
  538.     Norton AntiVirus 4.0 or 5.0 for Windows 95 / Windows NT Server &
  539.     Workstation, copy the files to this location:

  542.     NOTE: Copy the file ZDONE.DAT last. This file signals Norton
  543.     AntiVirus that the definition set has been completely loaded. If
