IMAGE DESCRIPTION:
The house is a rough model of a real viking farm called St_ng, on southeast
Iceland. It is a part of a game I'm working on.
I have put a limited demo on www.hexmaster.com/futhark; there you can walk
around in the house and see more of the scenery.
DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED:
Beginning with a simple map over St_ng and a photo of the exterior, I made a
single heightfield for the floor (which is not flat) and the walls. (I spent a
ridiculous amount of time getting the walls, floor and everything else
right...)
The wooden structures are carefully modeled after drawings and actual replicas
of viking buildings.
Most of the furniture was easy. To make the benches less boring, I made
heightfields of the upper surfaces with slight depressions (figuring out the
size of the average viking's butt - see what raytracing can force you to do!).
Glasses, spoons, plates and the wooden staff were made with sPatch. So where the
pieces of linen, modeled as if casually dropped.
The fire is made from halos; credit to Jaime Vives, who gave me a few
much-needed hints on how to make believable fire.
The chain was made with an include-file by Chris Colefax.
The wall texture I found in my texture library, where it's been for years. All
other textures are mine, either procedural in POV or image-maps.
