  88. Stella 2000 is new astronomical software for the PC which runs in all
  89. 32-bit flavours of Windows. Stella generates highly realistic views of
  90. the heavens in real time as observed from anywhere in the world.
  91.  
  92. Think of it as your virtual observatory. Stella is nothing less than a
  93. simulation of the stars in their courses as seen from Earth, and has the
  94. capacity to transform you into an expert on the skies.
  95.  
  96. Explore realistic skies in real time, complete with observing log and
  97. list facility, live ephemeris, location browser, and a sophisticated
  98. search embracing planets, comets, DSOs, and over 15500 stars.
  99.  
  100. Choose between 4 different celestial projections and observe from
  101. between 0-90 degrees of elevation and 0-360 degrees of the compass in
  102. either resizeable windows or in a faithful full-screen mode.

  104. Advance, retard, or animate the simulation's clock by years, months,
  105. days, and minutes of both sidereal or solar time.

  107. Stella builds upon the uniqueness and verisimilitude of its precursor
  108. Coeli - Electric Planisphere to bring effects such as scintillation,
  109. refraction, extinction, and precession in point-source, spotlight, and
  110. the new photoplate display modes. Subtler color gradations accurately
  111. reflect a star's true character, and the complete Messier catalog in
  112. ImageIcons features as an integral part of this new package, crowned by
  113. the facility to record and plan your real-sky observations quickly and
  114. conveniently.

  116. The sky and the ephemerides may be printed in either mono or color, with
  117. both horizon and equatorial grids, aequator, ecliptic, horizon,
  118. constellation lines, names, boundaries and legends.

  120. An astronomical application stands or falls by the quality of its data,
  121. and Stella 2000's sources are second to none. The starting point is the
  122. much relied-upon Harvard Revised Catalog (Hoffleit & Warren,1991), an
  123. incomparable source of details on 10000 or so naked eye stars down to
  124. magnitude 6.5. A permanent level-one database, the Bright Star Catalog is
  125. present in both the shareware and registered versions of Stella 2000,
  126. supplemented by a 7000 star selection from the ultra-modern ESA Hipparcos
  127. satellite sky survey, bringing Stella's basic population to almost 16000
  128. stars.

  130. For telescopic and binocular observers, we begin to climb the ladder of
  131. Stella's optional data extensions, all the way from magnitude 7.0 to
  132. those stars beyond magnitude 9 resolvable by more powerful amateur
  133. telescopes. The SAO and Hipparcos extensions are tiered in batches of
  134. 25000 stars, and may be purchased and loaded at your discretion.
  135. Stella's star capacity thus reaches a more-than-respectable 1 million.

  139.                          SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

  141. What do you need to run Stella 2000?
  142.

  144. Minimum System
  145. --------------
  146. Stella can be installed on any IBM compatible PC with a 486 DX processor
  147. or higher running Windows 95, 98, or NT. The more video and conventional
  148. RAM you have, the better - 1 Mb or more for the former, and at least 8Mb
  149. of the latter.

  151. Please note that although Stella will load and run on the stated minimum
  152. system, operations -- especially load times -- will be slow. We make no
  153. apologies for this: Stella is an advanced planetarium system containing
  154. more celestial objects and graphics than average and, in order to
  155. achieve such excellence, speed optimizations were inevitably among the
  156. first things to be sacrificed. Therefore we here suggest a more
  157. practical minimum system for running Stella as an Intel Pentium 166 with
  158. 16Mb of RAM.

  161. Recommended System
  162. ------------------
  163. The recommended system for running Stella 2000 is a Pentium 200 or
  164. higher with 32 Mb of RAM and a graphics card equipped with at least 2 Mb.

  166. Additionally, Stella requires that your Windows display be in either
  167. Hi-color or Truecolor mode, at a resolution of at least 800x600 pixels.
  168.  
  169. The optimum screen resolution for Stella is 1024x768. Please note that a
  170. display of only 256 colours is bound to be a disappointment.

  172. If your video subsystem is not up to displaying in at least
  173. Hi-color at 800x600, we would strongly recommend purchase of our
  174. slightly less demanding Coeli - Electric Planisphere, with which Stella

  231. Windows automatic installation

  234. Your Stella package is installed simply by double clicking on
  235. the file SETUP.EXE once you have unzipped the contents of
  236. Stella.zip to a folder of your choosing.
  237.  
  238. We recommend the excellent WinZip utility for unpacking
  239. Stella's main .zip archive. You can get the latest version
  240. of Winzip from

  244. If you have not already done so, we would additionally
  245. recommend that, prior to running SETUP.EXE, you use Explorer
  246. to create a new folder called Astronomy inside the Windows 95
  247. Start Menu folder. Just navigate to Windows\Start Menu and
  248. click with the right mouse button on some unoccupied space in
  249. Explorer's right-hand window. You'll see a popup menu, one of
  250. whose options will be |New|. Select |Folder| from the submenu,
  251. and name it 'Astronomy' or some other appropriate title. After
  252. setup, you will be able to manually move the shortcut named
  253. Stella 2000 into this new folder for a tidier and more compact
  254. Start menu.
  255.  
  256. Tip: when in doubt about the Win95 Explorer's file-listing,
  257. just press [F5] to refresh its display. Very often, an item you
  258. thought wasn't there will magically appear!
  259.  
  260. NB: IF INSTALLING OVER A PRIOR VERSION OF STELLA (WHETHER
  261. TRIAL OR REGISTERED), FIRST COPY ANY OBSERVATION LOG FILES
  262. (.STL) TO A SAFE PLACE BEFORE PROCEDING WITH THE REMOVAL OF
  263. THE OLD VERSION VIA THE CONTROL PANEL.

  265. WHEN YOU HAVE REMOVED THE OLD INSTALLATION, YOU MAY THEN
  266. CONFIDENTLY PROCEED WITH THE SETUP OF THE NEW VERSION OF

  274. Stella may be uninstalled at any time simply by opening
  275. Control Panel from the Settings entry in your Start Menu, and
  276. double- clicking on the item Add/Remove Programs. You will be
  277. shown a list of programs currently installed on your system,
  278. from which you should select the item 'Stella 2000' for
  279. automatic removal.

  281. The complete Stella 2000 package contains a number of text
  282. files, all designed to help you get started with the minimum
  283. of fuss. Have a browse through any item with the .TXT or .RTF
  284. extension if you've the time. Some of these will necessitate
  285. the selection of |Word Wrap| in Notepad or whichever text
  286. editor you elect to view them in.
