  21. GENERAL NOTES
  22.  
  23. Program Requirements.
  24. *This program runs on Windows NT 3.51 (tm), NT 4.0, 95 or 98 (tm).
  25. (all the preceding are trademarks or registered trademarks of the
  26. Microsoft Corporation).
  27. *Approximately 1.5MB disk space
  28. *TCP/IP Network connection with DNS
  29.  
  30. Network connection notes.
  31. An actively running connection to a network using a Windows Sockets
  32. (or compatible) link is suggested for DNS resolution.  Works with network cards
  33. connected to TCPIP networks or through dialup connections to internet providers.
  34. If you use dialup, you must be using a SLIP or PPP connection (TIA and Slirp work
  35. fine for all functions except ping and traceroute which require a static IP).
  36.  
  37. Your Computer Clock and the Trial Period.
  38. The trial wrapper that NetScanTools uses is sensitive to changes in your computer
  39. clock. Problems can arise if you use the Time Sync feature on a computer where
  40. the clock is off by more than a few minutes. Please see our web site support area
  41. for a full explanation. Your trial period can be reset as noted below.

  43. Registration Numbers.
  44. When sending us a NetScanTools Registration Number, please do not reinstall your
  45. copy of NetScanTools while you wait for your unlock or trial reset code. Each
  46. installation creates a new, random Registration Number.

  61. Trial Period Extensions.
  62. If you require more than 30 days to evaluate NetScanTools, or your trial period
  63. expires early due to changes in your computer clock, we can provide a reset code.
  64. This reset code will give you an additional 30 day trial period.

  87. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
  88.  
  89. 1. If this file was zipped. Unzip and copy all files to a new,
  90.    empty directory (folder).
  91. 2. Close this file.
  92. 3. Run setup.exe from your preferred file management program.
  93.  Be sure to install this program in a directory different than the directory
  94.  created in step 1 above.
  95. 4. Follow the instructions in the setup program.
  96.  
  97. UPGRADES For Series 3 REGISTERED Users.
  98. **If you are upgrading a Registered Version 3.0x.x to this version, you must:
  99. a) Run your old 3.0x.x at least once prior to using this installer.
  100. b) Exit your old 3.0x.x Registered Version
  101. c) Run setup.exe and follow the directions.
  102. d) email with your name, company name (if applicable), old serial number
  103. and Registration Number from NetScanTools 3.1 "buy now" button dialogs.

  127.     Whois now automatically uses to domain extension to determine which
  128.       whois server to query.
  129.     NetScanner can now automatically use the domain name of a responding
  130.       host for an integrated whois query.
  131.     Automatic entry cleanup. Removes http://, ftp://, mailto:, and
  132.       trailing "/". Not used on Whois, NetScanner, What's New at NWPSW.
  133.     Added PTR record option to Adv Query Setup.
  134.     Added high resolution timer queries for Ping/TraceRoute under systems
  135.       supporting these timers and running Raw Sockets.
  136.     Added start time recording and display to Ping and Traceroute.
  137.     Added "End of Query" message to Whois and NetScanner/Whois.
  138.     Added port scan for a single TCP service to NetScanner. Useful in
  139.       detection of things like web servers running on hosts in a subnet.
  140.     Added new "TCP Term" tab. This is a simple TCP terminal app which allows
  141.       you to connect to any port on a remote host and communicate with
  142.       the service residing on that port---assuming you know the protocol.
  143.     Added "Who Am I" button to Name Server Lookup tab.
  144.     Added "finger" cursor for web links to help and email.
  145.     Added Microsoft Mail (MAPI) support for emailing results.
  146.     Added "-t" command line option for automatically starting NetScanTools on the

  166. NetScanTools Client Function Summary

  168. NetScanTools contains a number of ports of UNIX functions:

  170. nslookup    full implementation of name server lookup
  171. finger        gets info about users on remote systems
  172. ping        determines ability to reach a remote host
  173. traceroute    determines route taken to reach a remote host
  174. whois        a lookup utility for determining registered internet names etc.
  175. daytime        returns the time of day on a remote host
  176. quote        returns quote of the day from a remote host
  177. character generator
  178.         a client that accesses a chargen service to determine
  179.         your link speed.
  180. Time Sync    Use network time servers to synchronize your computer's clock.
  181. Echo        connect to a remote host's echo daemon and send and receive
  182.         characters.
  183. IDENT Server    Identifies your computer to remote services that request info.
  184.         Fully configurable.

  188. NetScanner    A easy to sequentially ping an IP address range to find
  189.         the active computers. Will also resolve the IPs to host names.

  191. TCP Term    A simple TCP port text communication terminal.
