  1.                  Installing New Virus Definition Files
  2.                  =====================================

  4. As part of our continuing commitment to fight the spread of computer
  5. viruses, Symantec has developed a new program called Intelligent
  6. Updater to simplify virus definition file updates.  Intelligent
  7. Updater locates Norton AntiVirus on your computer and installs new
  8. virus definition files automatically.  All you have to do is run the
  9. program, then scan your disk with Norton AntiVirus.
  10.  
  11. There are several versions of Intelligent Updater available.  The newest
  12. package is a version of Intelligent Updater 2.0, used to deliver
  13. virus definitions for all the NAV products. The program name, which
  14. changes from month to month, uses the following form:
  15.  
  16. mmddx86.EXE, where mm is the month, and dd is the day.
  17.

  19. To update Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95 virus definition files:
  20. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  21.  
  22. 1. Go to (select) the folder or drive where you have the Intelligent
  23.    Updater program.
  24.    For example, your A: drive.
  25. 2. Double-click (launch) the Intelligent updater program.
  26. 3. Follow the instructions on screen.
  27. 4. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive.  Before you reboot
  28.    your computer, you must run a scan for viruses.  Scanning your
  29.    drive activates the new virus definitions and rebuilds critical
  30.    files.
  31. 5. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new
  32.    definitions.

  35. To update Norton AntiVirus 3.0/4.0 virus definition files from
  36. Windows:
  37. ---------------------------------------------------------------------

  39. 1. Go to (select) the directory or drive where you have the
  40.    Intelligent Updater program.
  41.    For example, your A: drive.
  42. 2. Double-click on the intelligent updater program.
  43. 3. Follow the on screen instructions.
  44. 4. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive.  Before you reboot
  45.    your computer, you must run a scan for viruses.  Scanning your
  46.    drive activates the new virus definitions and rebuilds critical
  47.    files.
  48. 5. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new
  49.    definitions as well.

  52. To update Norton AntiVirus 3.0/4.0 virus definition files from DOS:
  53. ---------------------------------------------------------------------

  55. 1. Exit Windows entirely.
  56.    For example, from within Windows, select EXIT from the File menu.
  57. 2. Change to the directory or drive where you have the Intelligent
  58.    Updater program.
  59.    For example, type A: at the C:\ prompt.
  60. 3. From the DOS prompt, type Intelligent Updater program name and
  61.    press Enter.
  62. 4. Follow the instructions on screen.
  63. 5. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive.  Before you reboot
  64.    your computer, you must run a scan for viruses.  Scanning your
  65.    drive activates the new virus definitions and rebuilds critical
  66.    files.
  67. 6. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new
  68.    definitions as well.

  71. To update Norton AntiVirus Network Manager virus definition files:

  74. 1. On a workstation connected to the network, change to the directory
  75.    where you downloaded the Intelligent Updater program.
  76. 2. Map a drive letter to the volume and directory where Norton
  77.    AntiVirus Network Manager is installed.
  78. 3. You must have READ and WRITE access to the mapped drive.
  79. 4. From a DOS prompt, type Intelligent Updater program name [path]
  80.    and press Enter.
  81.    [path] is the location mapped in step 2.
  82. 5. Follow the instructions on screen.
  83. 6. Start Norton AntiVirus from the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager
  84.    directory and scan a drive to activate the new virus definitions.
  85.    You must run a scan for viruses.  Scanning a drive activates the
  86.    new virus definitions and rebuilds critical files.

  88. To update Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Windows NT virus definition files:

  91. 1. Go to (select) the folder or drive where you have the Intelligent
  92.    Updater program.
  93.    For example, your A: drive.
  94. 2. Double-click (launch) the intelligent updater program.
  95. 3. Follow the instructions on screen.

  100. To update Norton AntiVirus 4.0 for Windows NT virus definition files:

  104.    Updater program.

  106. 2. Double-click (launch) the intelligent updater program.
  107. 3. Follow the instructions on screen.

  109.    for viruses.  Scanning your drive activates the new virus
  110.    definitions and rebuilds critical files.

  113. To update Norton AntiVirus for NetWare virus definition files:

  116. 1. On a workstation connected to the network, change to the directory
  117.    where you downloaded the Intelligent Updater program.
  118. 2. Map a drive letter to the volume and directory where Norton
  119.    AntiVirus for NetWare is installed.
  120. 3. You must have WRITE access to the mapped drive.
  121. 4. Disable the Norton AntiVirus for NetWare NLM.
  122.     Choose DISABLE NLM from the Tools menu in the Norton AntiVirus
  123.     for NetWare Windows configuration window.
  124.         or
  125.     Press F3 at the NAVNLM server console screen.
  126. 5. From a DOS prompt, type Intelligent Updater program [PathToNAVNLM]
  127.    and press Enter.  This will automatically extract the files in the
  128.    update to the specified path.
  129. 6. [path] is the location mapped in step 2.  Follow the instructions
  130.    on the screen.
  131. 7. Enable the Norton AntiVirus for NetWare NLM.
  132.     Choose ENABLE NLM from the Tools menu in the Norton AntiVirus for
  133.     NetWare Windows configuration window.
  134.         or
  135.     Press F2 at the NAVNLM server console screen.

  139. Installing Virus Definition Files Manually
  140. =====================================================================

  142. If you do not want Intelligent Updater to install the new virus
  143. definitions for you automatically, you can use the /DUMP command to
  144. extract the virus definition files, then copy the appropriate files
  145. to the Norton AntiVirus folder.
  146.  
  147. To install virus definition files manually:
  148. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  149.  
  150. 1. Copy the Intelligent Updater program to an empty, temporary
  151.    folder.
  152. 2. Launch the Intelligent Updater program using the /DUMP command:
  153.  
  154.    mmddx86.EXE /DUMP
  155.  
  156.    Virus definition files for all supported platforms are extracted
  157.    into the temporary folder.
  158. 3. Copy the appropriate files to the Norton AntiVirus folder.  If
  159.    you are using Norton AntiVirus 4.0 for Windows 95 / Windows NT
  160.    Server & Workstation, copy the files to this location:
  161.    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\VirusDefs\Incoming\
  162.    In addition, the file ZDONE.DAT needs to be copied last to this
  163.    location.  The presence of this file acts as a signal that the
  164.    definition set has been completely loaded, and may cause errors
  165.    if it is not the last file copied to the directory.  One easy
  166.    way to insure this is to rename ZDONE.DAT to Z.DAT, copy all the
  167.    files to the definition directory, and then rename Z.DAT back to
  168.    ZDONE.DAT in the definition directory.  This is a zero-byte file,
  169.    and if your version of the copy command doesn't copy this file,
  170.    the xcopy command will.
  171. 4. Refer to the Intelligent Updater File List below for information
  172.    on which files to copy into the Norton AntiVirus folder.
