IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS WHEN USING
TERRAGEN v0.6.28
====================================
IMAGE SAVING
============
Images will only be saved in 24bit if your display is in
24bit mode or higher. That is, at the moment, images are
saved directly from the screen. (This is bad, I know.)
------------------------------------------------------------
WORLD FILES
===========
World files do not contain information about the landscape,
cloudscape, atmosphere, etc. These must be saved in separate
files (from the respective forms). The world file does not
(yet) remember the filenames of the various elements
(terrain, surface map, atmosphere etc.), so they need to be
opened/saved manually.
------------------------------------------------------------
SKY AND CLOUDS
==============
There must be a cloud layer present in order for the sky to
look correct. If there are no cloud layers, the sky will
simply not be rendered.
Only one cloud layer can be used at present. More cloud
layers can be added, but the renderer will not use them
correctly.
The cloud layer display will not always accurately represent
the properties of the cloud layer. The density controls will
not update the display. Please use the 'Update View' button.
If areas of the rendered image are being left black, it is
because the cloud layer is not covering enough of the sky.
See 'Other Known Bugs / Problems'
Cloud Layers cannot be saved.
* New for v0.6 * There is an option for 3D clouds. They are
not up to the standard of those previewed a while ago, but
in some respects they are better than the original 2D
clouds. There are still problems with the 3D clouds, so you
may wish to continue to use 2D clouds. However, if you are
prepared to wait (or you have a fast computer), it is
possible to achieve some nice results by increasing the
'cloud accuracy' setting in Render Settings. For 2D clouds
this will not have much noticeable effect, but it adds a
huge amount of detail to 3D clouds.
------------------------------------------------------------
RENDER SETTINGS
===============
Render Settings can be found by clicking on the appropriate
button in the Render Control window. The Atmospheric
Accuracy setting can be changed, but high accuracy settings
mean longer rendering times.
To achieve the shortest possible render times, do not set
the accuracy higher than the middle setting, even for full
renders. However, in some scenes (particularly those with
very low half-height settings in the atmosphere) a higher
accuracy may be needed.
------------------------------------------------------------
LANDSCAPE
=========
Surface Map saving will not work with the new heirarchical
system. The opening of surface maps is slightly buggy at
present. If the colours turn black, try opening the file
again.
The Terrain and Surface Map displays may take a few seconds
to update. If the terrain or colours appear to not change
when they should, just give the program some time.
------------------------------------------------------------
*NEW IN v0.6.26*
================
Animation
Terragen now has simple script capability. Scripts can be
used to direct Terragen to render frames of an animation.
See the 'Animation' button in Render Controls for more info.
Terrain map shading
The terrain map now has simple light-sourcing applied to
give a better impression of the roughness of areas of the
terrain. If you've used Terragen before it may look unusual
for a while until you get used to it, particularly if you're
viewing the terrain in Black and White (greyscale) mode.
Terrain generation
Glaciation and Canyonism controls now work with Perlin Noise
terrain generation. A new 'Ridged Perlin' method has also
been added.
------------------------------------------------------------
OTHER KNOWN BUGS / PROBLEMS
===========================
The opening of surface maps is slightly buggy at present. If
the colours turn black, try opening the file again.
Surface maps and clouds cannot be saved.
World files only save camera and lighting data
(well, most of it...)
The smaller view of the landscape which appears in the
Render Control window is not displayed correctly on some
systems. The colours may look 'corrupted', or it may look as
though there are contour lines (this is accidental!). This
box is intended to show an exact smaller copy of the terrain
or surface map which is displayed in the Landscape window.
If you find that regions of the image are being left black,
this is because the clouds and landscape are only rendered
over certain areas of the image. If areas are being left
black, you should try increasing the 'Sky Size' of the
cloud layer. It is advisable to keep the sky size as small
as possible without leaving black areas, as this helps to
keep the rendering times as short as possible.
