  5. Purpose of FileNotes
  6. --------------------
  7. FileNotes by JAM Software integrates with Windows to provide 
  8. the capability to store notes about file system objects 
  9. including files, folders and shortcuts.  FileNotes will 
  10. maintain your notes when a file system object is moved, 
  11. copied or renamed.  FileNotes includes the FileNotes 
  12. Explorer that provides three views of your notes and 
  13. is independent of the Windows integration.
  14.  
  15. FileNotes integrates the following features into Windows:
  16. FileNotes Brief column in the Windows Explorer.
  17. FileNotes tab on the properties dialog of any file system object.
  18. File system objects with associated notes are tagged in Explorer Style Open/Save As dialogs.
  19. Explorer Style Open/Save As dialogs are enhanced to display an associated note.
  20. Explorer Sytle Save/As also provides the ability to add notes when a file is saved.

  22. FileNotes includes a component that is notified by Windows 
  23. whenever a change occurs to your file system and will ensure 
  24. the integrity of your associated notes when a file system 
  25. object is moved, copied or renamed.

  27. The FileNotes Explorer is a stand alone utility that provides 
  28. the ability to view and maintain your file system notes and 
  29. quickly identify objects that have associated notes.

  41. Installation Instructions
  42. -------------------------
  43. To Install FileNotes, this zip file should be unzipped (ideally to 
  44. a subdirectory created for FileNotes).  Run the setup.exe program 
  45. to install FileNotes.

  47. License Agreement

  49. Effective June 1, 1997

  51. The use of FileNotes Evaluation Copy is subject to the following
  52. terms and conditions:

  54. FileNotes is copyrighted material. It is protected by the
  55. copyright laws of the United States, the State of Texas, and other
  56. proprietary rights of Jay Mosier. You may not make any changes or
  57. modifications to any of the FileNotes executable binary files.
  58.  
  59. You may make copies of FileNotes only under the terms of the
  60. section entitled "Limited License to Copy the Software".
  61.  
  62. You may use this Evaluation Copy of FileNotes on a forty five (45)
  63. day trial basis only, provided you do not violate the protection
  64. afforded the licensed software by the copyright laws, and you agree
  65. to the terms of the license agreement.  If you use FileNotes past
  66. the 45 day evaluation period you are required to purchase it.

  68. This Shareware Evaluation copy of FileNotes has a timeout feature
  69. that will disable the ablility to add notes and to monitor changes
  70. to files and folders after 45 days.

  72. Limited License to Copy the Software
  73. ------------------------------------
  74. You are granted a limited license to copy this Evaluation Version
  75. of FileNotes ONLY FOR THE TRIAL USE OF OTHERS subject to the
  76. terms of this software license agreement described herein, and 
  77. that the conditions described below are met.

  79. No fee, charge or other compensation may be accepted or requested
  80. by anyone without the express written permission of Jay Mosier.

  82. Public Domain Disk Vendors May NOT CHARGE a fee for FileNotes
  83. itself. However you may include FileNotes on a diskette/CD-ROM
  84. for which you charge a nominal distribution fee. The purchaser
  85. of said diskette must be informed in advance that the fee paid to
  86. acquire the diskette does NOT relieve said purchaser from paying
  87. the Registration Fee for FileNotes if said purchaser uses
  88. FileNotes.

  90. Statement of Registration Requirements

  92. A statement of shareware registration requirements MUST be printed
  93. on a label, or other form, that is directly attached to the
  94. distribution media.

  96. Operators of electronic bulletin board systems and Internet Sites 
  97. may post this Evaluation Copy of FileNotes for downloading by their 
  98. users without written permission ONLY AS LONG AS THE ABOVE CONDITIONS 
  99. ARE MET.  A fee may be charged for access to the BBS or Internet Site 
  100. AS LONG AS NO SPECIFIC FEE IS CHARGED FOR DOWNLOADING FileNotes 
  101. without first obtaining the express written permission from Jay Mosier 
  102. to charge such a fee.

  104. Evaluation and Registration

  106. This is not free software.  This license allows you to use this
  107. software for evaluation purposes without charge for a period of 45
  108. days.  If you use this software after the 45 day evaluation period
  109. a registration fee of $19 (US Currency) is required.  Payment can be
  110. with a Check or Money Order.

  128. Whats New in Version 3.2.1
  129. --------------------------
  130. 1.)    Fixed problems exhibited when coexisting 
  131.     with other monitoring utilities such as
  132.     anti-virus programs and    system monitor 
  133.     programs.
  134.  
  135. 2.)    Increased integration with Windows 95 
  136.     Shell.  This version adds a 
  137.     "FileNotes Brief" column to the Windows
  138.     Explorer that will display the first 
  139.     256 characters of an associated note.
  140.  
  141. 3.)    FileNotes adds an interface to Explorer
  142.     Style Open/Save As dialogs.  Files and
  143.     folders with associated notes are tagged
  144.     with the FileNotes icon and when selected,
  145.     display the associated note.
  146.     The Save As dialog allows you to edit
  147.     or add notes when you save a file.

  149. 4.)    The FileNotes Configuration Utility allows
  150.     you to modify some of the settings for 
  151.     FileNotes.  Including whether or not to
  152.     display the FileNotes Monitor icon in the
  153.     system tray, whether or not to display
  154.     notes in the Windows Explorer and Explorer
  155.     Style dialogs.  The configuration utility
  156.     also allows you to cancel the automatic
  157.     file extensions that some applications add
  158.     when you save a file.

  160. 5.)    Fixed the problem of where some applications
  161.     such as MS Office and NetScape Composer will
  162.     delete the original file when editing causing
  163.     an associated note to be deleted.  This release
  164.     also fixes an associated problem where the File/Save
  165.     dialog in some applications will not save a note.

  168. *** You may need to upgrade your COMCTL32.DLL ***
  169. To determine if you need to upgrade your 
  170. COMCTL32.DLL you should install FileNotes. 
  171. After installing FileNotes, open the 
  172. Windows 95 Explorer and right Click on a 
  173. File or Folder.  Select Properties from the 
  174. right click menu.  If the properties dialog 
  175. does not display correctly then you need to 
  176. upgrade your COMCTL32.DLL.

  181. Features and Limitations
  182. ------------------------
  183. FileNotes integrates with Windows 95 to
  184. allow you to keep notes about all your 
  185. files and folders.  You create and access
  186. all your notes through the Windows 95
  187. Explorer.  To access and create notes, 
  188. simply right click the mouse on any file 
  189. or folder.  FileNotes can be accessed by
  190. right clicking on any folder or file object
  191. on the system including the desktop and 
  192. file open dialog boxes.
  193.  
  194. The notes that you create will follow 
  195. your files and folders whereever you copy
  196. them.  When you copy or move a file or 
  197. folder, the new files created will have 
  198. the same note as the original.
  199.  
  200. When you use the Windows 95 Explorer to 
  201. delete a file, the note will follow the 
  202. file to the recycle bin so that if you 
  203. restore the file, the note will also be 
  204. restored.  Unfortunately, this version 
  205. will not preserve notes for folders that 
  206. are sent to the recycle bin.
  207.  
  208. FileNotes includes the FileNotes Explorer 
  209. that allows you to quickly find, review, 
  210. add and update your notes.  The FileNotes 
  211. Explorer can be accessed from either the 
  212. Start | Programs menu or from the Windows 
  213. Explorer right click menu.
  214.  
  215. This version of FileNotes does not support 
  216. short file names.  This means that when you 
  217. move or copy files and folders in a DOS box, 
  218. you must use the long file name if you want 
  219. your notes to follow your files and folders.  
  220. Remember that if your long file name has a 
  221. space in it you must put double quotes around 
  222. it.  Also note that the short and long filenames 
  223. are the same for files with names within the 8.3
  224. format.
