  18. If your version of Norton AntiVirus (NAV.EXE, NAVW.EXE or NAVW32.EXE)
  19. is dated before June 1, 1996, you should update it with the latest
  20. program updates available. As viruses continue to be discovered with
  21. alarming regularity, the NAV virus definitions files have grown in
  22. size to counter the latest threats. Applying the patches will ensure
  23. that your installation will continue to accept the latest (and
  24. largest) virus definitions files. Using older versions of Norton
  25. AntiVirus can cause false detections when the new virus definitions
  26. are installed.

  29. Norton AntiVirus 3.10 Engine Update (UPDATEME.EXE)
  30. --------------------------------------------------
  31. To upgrade your Norton AntiVirus 3.0 program:
  32.  
  33.   * Download the file called UPDATEME.EXE
  34.   * Place the file in an empty directory and execute the file
  35.     to extract its components.
  36.   * Enter:  PATH;  at the DOS prompt.
  37.     DonÆt forget the semicolon. This command temporarily disables
  38.     your path statement and will prevent corruption of NAV Network
  39.     Manager installations.
  40.   * Run UPDATE.EXE to create a set of install files.
  41.     To place these files on floppies and create a new installation
  42.     disk set, enter A:\ when it prompts for a location to EXTRACT the
  43.     files to.
  44.   * From DOS, run INSTALL.EXE.
  45.  
  46.   * After applying this patch, you must also update your virus
  47.     definition set.

  50. NAV for Windows 95 v1.0, 95.0b Large Volume Update (NAV95OB.EXE)
  51. ----------------------------------------------------------------
  52. This latest patch also adds support for Microsoft Service Pack 2 (FAT
  53. 32/large volumes) and will be required to apply the December 1997
  54. virus definitions set.

  56. To upgrade your Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95 program:
  57.  
  58.   * Download the file called NAV95OB.EXE
  59.   * Place the file in an empty folder and execute the file
  60.     to begin the installation process.
  61.  
  62.   * After applying this patch, you must also update your virus
  63.     definition set.

  70. UPDATEME.EXE and NAV95OB.EXE are located where the monthly virus
  71. definitions files update are normally found. They are available for
  72. download from the Symantec BBS, the Symantec FTP or Web site,
  73. CompuServe, America Online, or Microsoft Network. You can also call
  74. Customer Service at one of the numbers noted at the end of this 
  75. document to order a disk set.

  79. **  Disappearing Hard Drives                                        **
  80. **********************************************************************
  81. Several viruses, such as Frankenstein and Stoned.Empire.Monkey, cause
  82. your hard disk to "disappear" when booting from a clean floppy disk.
  83. This occurs because the virus either encrypts or relocates the hard
  84. disk partition table (a vital part of the disk's system area).
  85.  
  86. All "appears" well when you boot from your hard disk because the
  87. virus actives in memory and tells DOS where the partition table is
  88. relocated, or acts as the partition table itself. If you boot clean,
  89. DOS can't find the partition table and the virus isn't around to give
  90. directions. You may receive an "Invalid drive specification" or
  91. similar error when trying to access the hard disk.
  92.  
  93. When you boot clean so NAV can repair such an infection, the hard
  94. disk will not appear in the drive list. Don't worry! NAV, with the
  95. default options enabled, will bypass DOS and look directly at the
  96. hard disk to check the system area for infection, no matter what you
  97. scan. For example, scanning a floppy disk will scan memory, the
  98. floppy disk, and the system area of the hard disk. If such an
  99. infection is discovered, you are alerted appropriately.

  101. NOTE: IDE hard drives larger than 1024 cylinders often require the
  102. use of additional driver or overlay files. If you have such a drive,
  103. you may need to include these additional files on your Norton
  104. AntiVirus Rescue Disk to ensure recovery from virus emergencies. Make
  105. sure that any special driver or overlay files for your hard drive,
  106. which are part of your normal system configuration, are included on
  107. your rescue disk.
