  20.     This chapter describes the software included on the CD-ROM, outlines the
  21.     system requirements to install and run the software, and provides an
  22.     overview of the license agreement.
  23.  
  24.     The license agreement defines your rights and obligations with respect
  25.     to the software. You should read the license agreement itself before
  26.     installing any software; the overview in this section is provided for
  27.     convenience only.
  28.  
  29. Last minute changes
  30. -------------------

  32.     For information about last-minute changes, see the README.1ST text file
  33.     in the installation directory once you have installed the software.

  35. CD-ROM contents
  36. ---------------
  37.  
  38.     The CD-ROM contains some or all of the following separately installable
  39.     software components:

  41.     * Professional Server software
  42.         (includes Standalone Engine with SQL Remote)
  43.     * Professional Standalone software
  44.         (includes Standalone Engine with SQL Remote)

  58.     version of the software. The Professional options allow you to install

  67.     Each of the Standard installation components is provided for each of the
  68.     following operating systems:
  69.  
  70.     * Windows NT
  71.     * Windows 95
  72.     * Windows 3.x
  73.     * OS/2
  74.     * DOS
  75.     * NetWare (server only)
  76.     * QNX (availability uncertain)
  77.  
  78.     The Professional installation components are provided for Windows NT and
  79.     Windows 95 only.
  80.  
  81. License agreement summary
  82. -------------------------
  83.  
  84.     The Sybase SQL Anywhere License Agreement included in the package gives
  85.     a full description of your rights and obligations regarding installation
  86.     and use of this product.
  87.  
  88.     This section provides a summary of those rights. The license agreement
  89.     itself is the definitive statement of your rights and obligations; this
  90.     section is for your convenience only. Read the license agreement before
  91.     installing any software. If there is any discrepancy between this
  92.     section and the license agreement, the license agreement prevails. SQL
  93.     Anywhere base package
  94.  
  95.     If you purchased the SQL Anywhere base package, you are licensed to have
  96.     a single copy of the Server software installed, for a single operating
  97.     system on a single machine, at any one time. The Server software
  98.     includes the standalone engine software with SQL Remote.
  99.  
  100.     For example, you may have one (and only one) copy of the Netork Server
  101.     for NT installed at one time. You may not have any other Server or
  102.     Standalone Engine installed at the same time without purchasing
  103.     additional licenses. All programs must be installed on the same
  104.     computer.
  105.  
  106.     You are also licensed to install one Client for a single operating
  107.     system on a single machine, for use with a properly licensed SQL
  108.     Anywhere Network Server. Installation of further clients requires the
  109.     purchase of additional Client licenses.
  110.  
  111.     You are licensed to replace an installation of one installation choice
  112.     with a different installation for the same or a different operating
  113.     system. You must purchase a Client license for each accessor to the SQL
  114.     Anywhere Network Server whether such accessor is a SQL Anywhere client
  115.     or not.
  116.  
  117. SQL Anywhere Concurrent Server package
  118.  
  119.     If you purchased the SQL Anywhere Concurrent Server package, you are
  120.     licensed to have a single copy of the Server software installed, for a
  121.     single operating system on a single machine, at any one time.
  122.  
  123.     You are also licensed to install an unlimited number of SQL Anywhere
  124.     Clients, provided that the total number of accessors to the SQL Anywhere
  125.     Server does not exceed the total number of concurrent devices licensed.
  126.     Additional SQL Anywhere licenses
  127.  
  128.     Additional Client, Server, Standalone Engine, and Standalone Engine with
  129.     SQL Remote licenses are also available. Special licensing is also
  130.     available permitting use of SQL Anywhere as an Internet Web Server
  131.     supporting an unlimited number of connections. Please contact Sybase for
  132.     more information.

  134. Use of multiplexes
  135.  
  136.     Use of software or hardware that reduces the number of accessors to the
  137.     server (sometimes called "multiplexing", "pooling", or "application
  138.     servers") does not reduce the number of licensed clients, but rather the
  139.     number of licensed clients required includes the number of distinct
  140.     inputs to the multiplexing software or hardware
  141.  
  142. System requirements
  143. -------------------
  144.  
  145.     SQL Anywhere requires an Intel-based PC running the operating system for
  146.     the version you install.
  147.  
  148. Processor requirements
  149.  
  150.     SQL Anywhere requires an Intel i386 or higher processor. The Client
  151.     software and the Windows 3.x 16-bit engine run on Intel 286 or higher
  152.     processors.
  153.  
  154. Disk space requirements
  155.  
  156.     Disk space requirements for each installation component are described in
  157.     the following sections.
  158.  
  159. SQL Anywhere Server
  160.  
  161.     The database server software and development components together require
  162.     approximately the following amounts of space on your hard disk:

  209. Operating system and memory requirements

  211.     The database engine uses a minimum of 1 Megabyte of memory. The database
  212.     engine also requests memory for a cache as specified on the command
  213.     line; if this memory is not available the database engine does run, but
  214.     performance suffers.
  215.  
  216.     The operating system version and minimum total memory requirements are
  217.     as follows:

  231.     If you are running a database server on a network, you must have
  232.     appropriate networking software installed and running.
  233.  
  234.     SQL Anywhere clients and database servers support the following network

  245. CHAPTER 2:  Installation
  246. ========================
  247.  
  248. About this chapter
  249. ------------------
  250.  
  251.     This chapter leads you through the installation process.
  252.  
  253.     The CD-ROM contains complete installations, for each of the supported
  254.     operating systems, for the following:
  255.  
  256.         * Professional Server software
  257.             (includes Standalone Engine with SQL Remote)
  258.         * Professional Standalone software
  259.             (includes Standalone Engine with SQL Remote)
  260.         * Standard Server software
  261.             (includes Standalone Engine with SQL Remote)
  262.         * Client software
  263.         * Standard Standalone Engine software
  264.         * Standard Standalone Engine with SQL Remote software
  265.  
  266.     The software you are entitled to install is determined by the package or
  267.     license you have purchased. See the previous chapter for a description.
  268.  
  269.     To install SQL Anywhere Professional on Windows NT, you must be
  270.     logged on as a user with Administrator privileges.
  271.  
  272. Choose the correct installation program
  273. ---------------------------------------
  274.  
  275.     The installation programs are in the top directory of the CD-ROM. The
  276.     following installation programs are provided:
  277.  
  278.         * To install software from OS/2, run the INSTALL.EXE installation program.
  279.  
  280.         * To install software from Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 3.x, or DOS,
  281.           run the SETUP.EXE installation program.
  282.  
  283.         * To install the QNX client or server software, run the standard QNX 
  284.           installation process. To start the process, type /etc/install
  285.  
  286.     The remainder of the installation description does not apply to QNX
  287.     installations.
  288.  
  289.     The SQL Anywhere server for NetWare is a special case. To install a
  290.     NetWare database server, you run the installation program from a client
  291.     workstation. You should run SETUP or INSTALL, depending on the client
  292.     workstation operating system.
  293.  
  294.     The installation program installs software for the operating system you
  295.     are currently running.
  296.  
  297. Enter your registration number
  298. ------------------------------
  299.  
  300.     The installation program asks you to enter your registration number.
  301.     Your registration number is the 12-digit code printed on your
  302.     registration card.
  303.  
  304.     Entering a valid registration number helps ensure that you install only
  305.     software for which you have a valid license. You are presented with a
  306.     choice of options: the choices depend on the kind of license you have
  307.     purchased.
  308.  
  309. Choose the software you wish to install
  310. ---------------------------------------
  311.  
  312.     The installation program presents you with a choice of options,
  313.     depending on the license or package you have purchased:
  314.  
  315.     If you have purchased the SQL Anywhere Professional base package, you
  316.     are presented with the following options:
  317.  
  318.         * Professional Server software
  319.             (includes Standalone Engine with SQL Remote)
  320.         * Professional Standalone Client software
  321.             (includes Standalone Engine with SQL Remote)
  322.         * Standard Server software
  323.             (includes Standalone Engine with SQL Remote)
  324.         * Client software
  325.         * Standard Standalone Engine software
  326.         * Standard Standalone Engine with SQL Remote software
  327.  
  328.     If you have purchased the SQL Anywhere base package, you are presented
  329.     with the following options:
  330.  
  331.         * Sybase SQL Anywhere Server (includes Engine/SQL Remote)
  332.         * Sybase SQL Anywhere Client
  333.         * Sybase SQL Anywhere Standalone Engine
  334.         * Sybase SQL Anywhere Standalone Engine with SQL Remote
  335.  
  336.     If you have purchased a SQL Anywhere Concurrent Server license, you are
  337.     presented with the following options:
  338.  
  339.         * Sybase SQL Anywhere Server (includes Engine/SQL Remote)
  340.         * Sybase SQL Anywhere Client
  341.  
  342.     If you have purchased any other license, you are not presented with a
  343.     choice of software to install. In this case you should skip the
  344.     following section.
  345.  
  346.     The installation program installs software for the operating system you
  347.     are currently using. If you run the installation program from Windows
  348.     95, software for Windows 95 is installed on your computer. If you select
  349.     the Sybase SQL Anywhere Standalone Engine while running Windows NT, the
  350.     installation program installs the Standalone Engine for Windows NT.
  351.  
  352.     Click the option you wish to install, and click Install to continue.
  353.  
  354. Choose the process you want to carry out
  355. ----------------------------------------
  356.  
  357.     Once you have chosen the software to install, choose which process you
  358.     wish to carry out:
  359.  
  360.         * Install or reinstall the software
  361.         * Uninstall the software
  362.         * Create installation diskettes
  363.         * Create a package for Microsoft Systems Management Server
  364.  
  365.     Choosing to install the software installs into a directory of your
  366.     choice. Uninstalling the software removes files from your computer.
  367.     Creating installation diskettes copies files onto a set of installation
  368.     diskettes, together with a SETUP.EXE or INSTALL.EXE program, for later
  369.     installation onto a hard drive.
  370.  
  371.     If you are a System Administrator using Microsoft Systems Management
  372.     Server, you can choose to create a package for unattended installation.
  373.  
  374.     If you choose to create installation diskettes, you will be presented
  375.     with a window informing you how many 1.44Mb diskettes you need, and
  376.     guided through copying files onto the diskettes.
  377.  
  378.     Once you have clicked one of the choices, click OK to continue.
  379.  
  380. Install/reinstall the software
  381.  
  382.     If you choose to install software, the installation program prompts you
  383.     for an installation directory. The default installation directory is
  384.     C:\SQLANY50.
  385.  
  386.     If you wish to install the application into a directory other than the
  387.     default, type the name of another installation directory and/or drive,
  388.     and click OK to continue.
  389.  
  390.     The installation program also asks if you wish to install some optional
  391.     components. You can install these components now, or at a later time, or
  392.     not at all:
  393.  
  394.         * NetImpact Dynamo (Professional Edition only) NetImpact Dynamo is a
  395.         package for bringing Internet features to your database.
  396.         
  397.         * Powersoft InfoMaker (Professional Edition only) The powerful
  398.         reporting tool from Powersoft. 
  399.  
  400.         * C/C++ development components If you will be developing C or C++
  401.         applications for SQL Anywhere, you should choose to install the
  402.         development components. These include header files and sample code
  403.         for C and C++ development projects as well as libraries and the
  404.         preprocessor. 
  405.  
  406.         * DLLs for version 3.2 and 4.0 applications If you have applications
  407.         that explicitly specify a version 3.2 or 4.0 DLL, you should choose to
  408.         install these components.
  409.  
  410.     Once you have selected the components to install, click OK.
  411.  
  412. Open Server Components
  413.  
  414.     A separate window offers you a choice of installing the Open Server
  415.     Gateway and the Open Server components (not available for all operating
  416.     systems).
  417.  
  418.     The Open Server components are available for the Windows NT, NetWare,
  419.     and OS/2 server installations only. These components are required if you
  420.     will be using or developing client applications that connect to SQL
  421.     Anywhere using the Open Server Gateway.
  422.  
  423.     The Open Server Gateway is provided for compatibility with Sybase SQL
  424.     Server. If you are not developing applications using Sybase client
  425.     libraries, you will not need the Open Server Gateway or the Open Server
  426.     Components.
  427.  
  428.     The installation program installs the options that are checked, and
  429.     uninstalls any unchecked options.
  430.  
  431. Concurrent server license
  432.  
  433.     If you have purchased a SQL Anywhere Concurrent Server license, you are
  434.     prompted for the license diskette once the files are copied. If you have
  435.     purchased the SQL Anywhere base package or another license, you are
  436.     prompted to enter your name and organization.
  437.  
  438. Changes made by the installation program
  439.  
  440.     In addition to installing the SQL Anywhere fles onto your computer, the
  441.     installation program makes some other changes to your system. These
  442.     changes are described here, along with other changes you may wish to
  443.     make in order to run the software.
  444.  
  445.     The descriptions here assume the installation directory is C:\SQLANY50.
  446.     If you have installed into a different directory, the new name should be
  447.     substituted below.
  448.  
  449. Changes to the DOS AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files
  450.  
  451.     The DOS, Windows 3.x, and Windows 95 installations modify the DOS
  452.     AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files.
  453.  
  454.     It prompts you whether to make the changes in place, or save them for
  455.     you to make later in the files C:\SQLANY50\AUTOEXEC.DOS and
  456.     C:\SQLANY50\CONFIG.DOS. These changes ensure that certain configuration
  457.     parameters are adequate to run the software and set some environment
  458.     variables used by the software. We recommend that you allow the install
  459.     program to make the changes to these files-a backup copy of these files
  460.     is automatically made (CONFIG.BAK and AUTOEXEC.BAK).
  461.  
  462.     The changes to AUTOEXEC.BAT are:
  463.  
  464.         * Add the operating system subdirectory of your installation
  465.           directory to your path. For example, if you have installed the
  466.           Windows 3.x version into the default installation directory,
  467.           then C:\SQLANY50\WIN is added to your path.
  468.     
  469.         * Set the SQLANY environment variable to point to the installation
  470.           directory.
  471.  
  472.     The changes to CONFIG.SYS are:
  473.  
  474.         * Ensure that the maximum number of open FILES parameter is set to
  475.           at least 20.
  476.         * Ensure that the BUFFERS parameter is at least 30.
  477.  
  478. Changes to the OS/2 CONFIG.SYS file
  479.  
  480.     The OS/2 installation modifies the OS/2 configuration file, CONFIG.SYS.
  481.     It prompts whether to make the changes in place, or save them for you to
  482.     make later in the file C:\SQLANY50\CONFIG.NEW. Some of the SQL Anywhere
  483.     software will not run without the changes to the CONFIG.SYS file, so we
  484.     recommend that you allow the install program to make the changes to the
  485.     file-a backup copy of this file is automatically made (CONFIG.BAK).
  486.  
  487.     The PATH and LIBPATH environment variables are modified to include
  488.     C:\SQLANY50\OS2, and the SQLANY environment variable is set to
  489.     C:\SQLANY50. The HELP environment variable is modified to include
  490.     C:\SQLANY50\OS2.
  491.  
  492. The Windows NT Registry
  493.  
  494.     In addition to the ODBC changes described below, the Windows NT
  495.     installation makes the following changes to the registry:
  496.  
  497.     * Add the C:\SQLANY50\WIN32 directory to your path.
  498.     * Set the SQLANY environment variable to C:\SQLANY50.
  499.     * Sets registry entries for NetImpact Dynamo and SQL Central.
  500.  
  501. The NetWare AUTOEXEC.NCF file
  502.  
  503.     The NetWare installation procedure does not automatically change the
  504.     AUTOEXEC.NCF file.
  505.  
  506.     To avoid having to specify a full path every time you want to start up
  507.     the SQL Anywhere. NLM server, you should install it into the SYS:\SYSTEM
  508.     directory on your NetWare server. If you do install the NLMs elsewhere,
  509.     you may wish to add that directory to your NetWare server search path.
  510.     To do this, add the following line to your AUTOEXEC.NCF file:
  511.  
  512.         search add SYS:\SQLANY50
  513.  
  514. NetWare installation directory
  515.  
  516.     If you install the SQL Anywhere database server NLM in a directory other
  517.     than \SYSTEM and you have run the SECURE CONSOLE command under NetWare,
  518.     you will not be able to run the database server NLM.
  519.  
  520. QNX changes
  521.  
  522.     A symbolic link is created from the usr/bin directory to the bin
  523.     subdirectory of the installation directory for all executable files in
  524.     the directory, with exceptions listed below. The link has the same name
  525.     as the file, with the exception of the following:
  526.  
  527.     link name       executable name
  528.     ------------------------------------
  529.     dbclient        dbclient32
  530.     dbsrv50         dbsrv50
  531.     isql            isql32
  532.     rtsql           rtsql32
  533.  
  534.     Links are created from the /etc/sqlany50 directory to the help
  535.     subdirectory for the dbserver.hlp and isql.hlp files. The links have the
  536.     same name as the files.
  537.  
  538. Changes to ODBC data sources
  539.  
  540.     For Windows 3.x, Windows 95, Windows NT, and OS/2, the setup program
  541.     installs the SQL Anywhere ODBC driver into the ODBCINST.INI file or
  542.     registry, and the SQL Anywhere 5.0 Sample data source into the ODBC.INI
  543.     file or registry.
  544.  
  545.     For Windows 3.x, Windows 95, Windows NT, and OS/2 clients, the setup
  546.     program installs the SQL Anywhere ODBC driver into ODBCINST.INI and a
  547.     SQL Anywhere 5.0 Sample Client data source into ODBC.INI.
  548.  
  549.     The Windows 3.x, Windows 95, and Windows NT installations convert ODBC
  550.     data sources for Watcom SQL to use the drivers from the SQL Anywhere 5.0
  551.     installation. You can choose to convert all data sources, selectively
  552.     convert one at a time, or not convert any.
  553.  
  554. Obtaining updates
  555.  
  556.     Periodically, updates to this release of the software (patches) will be
  557.     made available. You can obtain these updates in one of the following
  558.     ways.
  559.  
  560. Obtaining updates electronically
  561.  
  562.     Updates to the software (patches) are put up on the BBS, Compuserve
  563.     forum, World-Wide Web site and FTP site. They can be downloaded free of
  564.     charge. See the Contact Sheet for addresses and numbers.
  565.  
  566. Upgrade subscriptions
  567.  
  568.     For greater convenience, and to be sure your software is as current as
  569.     possible, you can purchase an Upgrade Subscription.
  570.  
  571.     With a Sybase SQL Anywhere Upgrade Subscription you automatically
  572.     receive a CD-ROM containing updated software whenever an update becomes
  573.     available.
