  4. To install Windows Commander, just run install.exe
  5.  
  6. What is Windows Commander?
  7.  
  8. Windows Commander is a file manager for Windows  similar to the Windows file
  9. manager WINFILE.EXE. But Windows Commander uses a different approach: it has two
  10. fixed windows, which makes copying files much easier. Wincmd exists in two
  11. versions, 16 and 32 bit. While the 16-bit version runs fine also in 32-bit 
  12. Windows, the 32-bit version cannot be used in Windows 3.1.

  14. Windows Commander is shareware. The shareware version is freely distributable, 
  15. as long as it is unchanged!

  17. Here some key features of Windows Commander:

  19. - Long filename support in Windows 95 and Windows NT (16 and 32 bit version)
  20. - FTP client to transfer files over the Internet
  21. - Direct access to Network Neighborhood (without mounting a drive)
  22. - Directory history list, supports 'go back' and 'go forward'
  23. - Directory hotlist (configurable bookmark menu) - CTRL+D
  24. - Split/Combine big files
  25. - Encode/Decode files in UUE, XXE and MIME format
  26. - New flat look (old 3d look configurable)
  27. - Supports Drag & Drop with the mouse
  28. - 32bit: Drag&drop from and to explorer and the desktop.
  29. - Extended copying, moving, renaming and deleting of entire trees.
  30. - Archives are handled like subdirectories. You can easily copy files
  31.   to and from archives. The appropriate archiver program is automatically
  32.   called. Pkzip, arj, lha, rar and uc2 are all supported.
  33. - Start menu (User-defined commands).
  34. - Configurable button bar.
  35. - Command line for the simple starting of programs with parameters.
  36. - Enhanced search function with full text search even inside archives.
  37. - Built in file viewer (F3) to view files of ANY SIZE in hex, binary or text
  38.   format, using either the ASCII- (DOS) or the ANSI- (Windows) character set.
  39. - Internal Unzip by Info-Zip
  40. - Internal unpacker for ARJ, LZH, TAR, GZ and CAB.

  43. Removing Windows Commander: If you remove the program, also delete the files
  44. wincmd.ini and noclose.pif in your Windows directory!

  46. Installation BY HAND: Just copy the files to a directory on your hard disk.
  47. Rename the files install.bin and installe.bin to install.zip and installe.zip
  48. and unzip them with pkunzip -d. Then move all files with the extension .pif
  49. into your Windows directory.
